Roosevelt, Franklin D.
Log of the Cruise of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the Gulf of Mexico 29 April–11 May 1937
Washington D. C. 1937. First edition one of only a few copies produced. Pictorial title page map with route markings in red and blue pencil. 35 leaves mimeographed on rectos only. 1 vols. 4to. Manila cardstock covers and white cloth spine as issued with original ink drawing on front. A few very light stains. Fine. First edition one of only a few copies produced. Pictorial title page map with route markings in red and blue pencil. 35 leaves mimeographed on rectos only. 1 vols. 4to. A fine fresh example of the log of Roosevelt's 1937 journey in the Gulf of Mexico at first aboard the U.S.S. Moffett accompanied by his son Elliott and others to rendez-vous with the U.S.S. Potomac near Aransas Pass for a cruise after tarpon. A temporary White House was established in Galveston where Roosevelt signed legislation and sent a formal letter of condolence to the German people after receiving reports of the Hindenburg disaster. On 8 May out in a guide fishing boat accompanied by an escort and Secret Service detail in two other boats Roosevelt had a big strike from a tarpon and landed the fish after an hour and twenty minutes. The log was prepared by Col. Edwin A. Watson notes Halter.

This copy is inscribed by Roosevelt on the title to his old friend Marvin McIntyre who was among the President’s small entourage on the land-side legs of this voyage: “Marvin H. McIntyre / from / Franklin D. Roosevelt.†Where Halter describes the title leaf as the cover this copy is bound in original hand-crafted cardstock covers and embellished on the front with a black ink drawing of a fish on a hook an image echoing ones on both the title page and final leaf as well as the purpose of the trip. One copy in an alternate binding is recorded in commerce suggesting they may have been bound up on a somewhat ad-hoc basis.

More than a dozen of these cruise logs were produced during Roosevelt’s administration presented as gifts and ornaments to the small group of his sailing partners and close friends and family. This is among the most ephemeral though: unlike the others it wasn’t produced by the Government Printing Office but instead printed via mimeograph in a simple hand-crafted binding and thus is rather more informal; it’s likely that fewer than 15–20 copies were produced and due to its fragile nature it has appeared very rarely at auction and in commerce. As such it is an important relic of Roosevelt’s much publicized love of sailing and the few surviving examples are a testament to his appreciation of his close advisors and friends who were sometimes not included in the “brain trust.â€

An old acquaintance from Roosevelt’s first job in Washington McIntyre clearly had endeared himself to the President and aside from their friendship Roosevelt also relied on "Mac" to speak to the press to organize his endless parade of brief meetings and to manage the expectations of anyone who got close to Roosevelt. To be tasked with this job during the Great Depression and the Second World War — when the problems were acute and the consequences of any presidential action severe — was no small task for any person but Mac’s indifference to ideology his loyalty to the administration and his abilities secured him a long tenure in the Roosevelt White House. He was a regular recipient of these meaningful presidential gifts the same ones Roosevelt gave to his closest friends and family.

A high point in any presidential collection and certainly in a Roosevelt collection. Halter p. 191 noting a copy at LC unknown

Log Of The Cruise Of President Franklin D. Roosevelt To Dry Tortugas Florida; 29 November 1937 - 6 December 1937
Washington DC: The White House 1937. Limited Edition. Cloth. Near fine. Log Of The Cruise Of President Franklin D. Roosevelt To Dry Tortugas Florida a limited publication inscribed to his lead Secret Service Agent Paul Hart. Octavo 25 leaves. Plain paper wrappers bound at spine with staples and cloth binding tape. Printed on 23 mimeographed leaves tipped-in photograph of Fort Jefferson on second leaf. Halter 191 Horowitz 83 Includes the White House envelope and recipient's business card. Housed in custom blue cloth clamshell case title in gilt on cover over red morocco label compartment for envelope with archival sleeve. This copy is inscribed on the title page to Roosevelt's Secret Service Agent who accompanied him on the cruise: "For Paul Hart from Franklin D. Roosevelt." This copy is from the private estate of Paul M. Hart Missouri City Texas February 2021. Possibly the scarcest of all the Roosevelt cruise logbooks. From Halter's research there were a total of 17 logbooks issued between 1934-1945. They were all privately printed with the authorship being unknown for each volume. It is suspected that FDR military aide Edwin M. "Pa" Watson authored this volume but there is no direct attribution. One other copy of Log of the Cruise of President Franklin D. Roosevelt to Dry Tortugas Florida appeared in the 1996 Glenn Horowitz sale and we can find one copy held by the Library of Congress.

This fishing trip off the coast of Florida aboard the presidential yacht Potomac included visits to Miami and Fort Jefferson. The President was accompanied by his son James Roosevelt Harold Ickes Edwin M. Watson recently widowed Harry Hopkins and twelve staff members. The President was suffering from a tooth infection during the trip but was in good spirits. Soon after the trip concluded Harry Hopkins was admitted to the hospital with stomach cancer and required life-saving surgery. [The White House] unknown

ROOSEVELT, Franklin Delano
LOG OF THE CRUISE OF PRESIDENT FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT ABOARD THE SCHOONER YACHT SEWANNA TO MAINE NOVA SCOTIA & NEW BRUNSWICK
Washington: Government Printing Office 1937. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. A record of a two-week cruise in July 1936. Original blue cloth with an anchor in gilt on the front cover; 8 19 1 pages. Illustrated with a tipped-in frontispiece of the yacht and a large folding chart bound at the end. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the President on the front endpaper: "For Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr./from his affectionate Father/Franklin D. Roosevelt." Franklin Jr. along with his brothers John and James were piloted by their father aboard this charted schooner in a trip James called "Pa's prize cruise." Authorship of this log along with the other eight pre-war logs of presidential cruise-vacations has not been established but according to Halter's bibliography "it is probable that they were the work of several members of each cruise. As far as I had been able to check before this book went to press a total of 17 logs were issued from 1934-1945." All were privately printed in very small numbers and are virtually unobtainable. When they do show up they are usually not signed or inscribed. While never achieving the renown of his father Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr. was a successful congressman 1949-1954 who twice ran for governor of New York and who was a close friend and early backer of John F. Kennedy. He later became a successful businessman. A scarce book on the market this is an Association Copy of the highest order.

[Government Printing Office] hardcover

John Day 1933. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. One of ten deluxe copies only prepared for presentation by the publisher and FDR. The publisher in addition to the first trade edition published a deluxe edition in a different format of 100 copies only all numbered. Copies 11 through 100 were for sale. Copies 1 through 10 were not for sale. This is copy 10 one of the first 10 copies explicitly according to the colophon page not for sale. Differs from the first trade edition in many ways including gold gilt on top edge and beveled boards. Also strangely the deluxe edition is a smaller format than the trade edition although it has all the same content. Housed in a custom-made collector slipcase. Needless to say deluxe one of ten copies of significant books by US Presidents are very uncommon. This is an early title by FDR articles and speeches before he became President and published just when he started his first term. Issued without a dust jacket. We have seen only one other copy of this presentation edition and it was inscribed by FDR. John Day hardcover
