Inscribed: "Especially and gratefully for Veronica Hutchinson Dick Halliburton Dec 6 1929." Small chip and tear in left margin; good condition.<br/><br/> American traveler adventurer and author who died at age 39 in an attempt to sail a Chinese junk the Sea Dragon across the Pacific ocean from Hong Kong to the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco a feat that made him legendary. More recent revelations have shown that Halliburton though infatuated with the image of heroic masculinity was an early proponent of Gay Rights. He was romantically linked to film star Ramon Navarro and philanthropist Noel Sullivan. His most enduring relationship was with freelance journalist Paul Mooney with whom he shared living quarters and perished on March 24 1939.<br/><br/> unknown books‎

While known as the first American physician to devote himself entirely to neurology and the author of the first treatise on the subject it was his role in the Civil War and this major work for which he is best remembered. When Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton fired Clement Finley the Surgeon General Abraham Lincoln against Stanton's advice named the 34-year-old Hammond to succeed him with the rank of brigadier general. On April 1962 he became Surgeon General of the Army. He launched many reforms ranging from qualifications of medical personnel importance of ventilation record-keeping and the creation of the Satterlee Hospital. He promoted Jonathan Letterman which brought an efficient ambulance system to the service. He banned mercury from army supplies. Since hygienic standards were still very poor in the United States Army and soldiers often died because of inadequate medical care poor sanitary conditions and lack of attention to proper shelter and nutrition since there was no up-to-date work on the subject he wrote this book to be distributed to all officers and medical personnel. A thorough and detailed book it contains many of the ideas and principles that Hammond instituted in his reform of the army medical service. In writing on morbid habits he warns of the mischief caused by masturbation which causes he notes that "the masturbator shuns society.and evinces an apathy for all kinds of amusements." He discusses all aspects of diet providing charts and comparisons of the requirements in the British and Russian armies. How to keep the alimentary canal in good order is a major concern for the soldier. ‎br. Viviamo in perenne mancanza di tempo. Quasi in apnea, ci affrettiamo per poter fare esperienza di tutto quello che il nostro mondo iperproduttivo ci mette davanti. Accelerare per avere più tempo è diventato l'imperativo della nostra vita. Ma questa 'epoca dell'affanno', in definitiva, ci rende ansiosi, stressati, disorientati. L'accelerazione della tecnologia e delle trasformazioni sociali non solo ha annientato lo spazio e la geografia stessa (ogni luogo è a portata di un clic o di qualche ora di aereo), ma ha atomizzato il tempo, lo ha frammentato in tanti 'attimi presenti' che si sostituiscono l'uno all'altro, che non conoscono più pause e intervalli, soglie e passaggi, e soprattutto non costruiscono più un'unica storia: la nostra. Perché questa disgregazione riguarda anche la nostra identità, che si impoverisce e si riduce, soffocata dalle proprie attività senza durata. Sono queste le riflessioni che Byung-Chul Han, il filosofo coreano che ama riflettere sull'uomo svelandone la situazione critica di fronte agli stimoli della società contemporanea, mette a fuoco in questo libro dal titolo seducente. Percorrendo in modo originale il pensiero filosofico sul tempo, da Aristotele e Tommaso a Heidegger e Arendt, passando per Hegel, Marx e Nietzsche (ma soffermandosi anche a lungo sull'opera di Proust), egli ci mette di fronte a quella che riassume come un'assolutizzazione della vita activa: la necessità di produrre (e consumare) come forma di realizzazione umana, che finisce per sottrarre all'uomo respiro e spirito. Bisogna allora riguadagnare un posto alla vita contemplativa, nella sua forma più quotidiana e vicina. Vale a dire reimparare a fermarsi, a 'indugiare': bellissimo verbo che parla di pause, di ozio meditativo, di sguardo lungo e cordiale sulle cose. In una parola, lo sguardo contemplativo restituisce al tempo il suo 'profumo', che è lento e permanente, che sa di ricordo e di memoria. Acquista allora un senso nuovo e smette di essere solo una stravagante curiosità l'orologio 'a profumo' dell'antica Cina, cui l'autore dedica pagine piene di poesia, che misura il tempo col bruciare di un profumato sigillo d'incenso: alla fine, resta un'eccedenza speciale, un aroma che riempie lo spazio, che indugia nell'aria in un momento sospeso e denso che apre alla felicità.‎
