New York: Sixth American Chess Congress 1891 xxxviii490 pages with table and diagrams. Royal octavo 9 3/4" x 7" bound in full leather with gilt lettering to spine. Limited to 500 copies. This is copy 111 issued to R W Ferguson of Flushing New York. Betts: 25-26 .1st edition. Contains the report of the Congress Committee and all 432 games with notes by Steinitz. This was a 20-man Double Round Robin Tournament. One of the longest tournaments in history. In the first half of the tournament draws were counted as a half point. In the second half they were replayed once. Between the 38 regular rounds 8 replay rounds and 4 game playoff for first at the end there were 50 rounds all told !. Like the 4th Congress this tournament consisted largely of foreign masters. The retirement of Captain Mackenzie seems to date from this time though some sources credit him as US Champion until his death in 1891 giving the top American finisher some claim on being de facto US Champion. The top American finisher was Solomon Lipschutz who finished in 6th Place with a score of 22-9=7 Condition: Some internal pencil markings and notations. The best and rarest of the Stenberg posters. From CineMaterial: The Stenberg brothers Vladimir 1899-1982 and Georgii 1900-1933 were Soviet artists and designers. While born in Moscow both remained Swedish citizens until 1933 because their father was a Swede. The innovative visual aspects of their posters included a distortion of perspective elements from Dada photomontage an exaggerated scale a sense of movement and a dynamic use of color and typography. Their artwork was frequently based on stills from the films. Radical even today the posters by the brothers working together were realized within the nine-year period from 1924 to 1933 the year Georgii died at age 33. His motorcycle hit a truck a few months after the brothers had become Russian citizens. Waterloo e la definitiva caduta di Napoleone, deluso dall'atteggiamento della Francia della Restaurazione nei confronti dell'imperatore in esilio, il trentaquattrenne Stendhal decise di scriverne una biografia, cui lavorò a più riprese a Milano fra il 1817 e il 1818, ma che lasciò incompiuta, ferma agli accadimenti del 1815. La Vita di Napoleone è ben lontana dal rigore documentario e dall'oggettività degli storici di professione, ma ha il pregio della vivacità e dello stile avvincente di chi nel narrare le imprese militari e gli episodi della vita privata del grande generale prende sempre le mosse da un fatto concreto, da un aneddoto ascoltato dal vivo. L'aspetto più affascinante di questo resoconto sta nel fatto che la più importante personalità politica del tempo è giudicata da un testimone diretto degli avvenimenti destinato a diventare un grande scrittore. La biografia di Napoleone è anche, in qualche misura, l'autobiografia di Stendhal: un congedo dalla giovinezza, un omaggio ai propri ardenti ideali bonapartisti, il rimpianto di un'epoca eroica irrimediabilmente perduta. Number 130 in the Modern Library Series. The Red Badge of Courage is a war novel by American author Stephen Crane 1871–1900. Taking place during the American Civil War the story is about a young private of the Union Army Henry Fleming who flees from the field of battle. Overcome with shame he longs for a wound a "red badge of courage" to counteract his cowardice. When his regiment once again faces the enemy Henry acts as standard-bearer.<br />Although Crane was born after the war and had not at the time experienced battle first-hand the novel is known for its realism. He began writing what would become his second novel in 1894 using various contemporary and written accounts such as those published previously by Century Magazine as inspiration. It is believed that he based the fictional battle on that of Chancellorsville; he may also have interviewed veterans of the 124th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment commonly known as the Orange Blossoms. Initially shortened and serialized in newspapers in December 1895 the novel was published in full in October 1895. Studi carducciani vecchi e nuovi
br. Nel libro sono raccolti nove studi carducciani, dei quali per la verità solo uno è inedito, mentre gli altri otto sono apparsi su riviste negli anni tra il 2008 e il 2019. Ma in realtà anche sugli articoli già pubblicati l'autore è intervenuto su varianti e aggiunte talvolta anche rilevanti, cosicché egli pensa di poter onestamente affermare che anche i saggi "vecchi" contengono novità. Marco Sterpos è anche convinto che questi studi, sia pur scaglionati nell'arco di dodici anni, non costituiscano una mera somma di saggi, ma sviluppino un discorso coerente e organico. Il primo capitolo è dedicato alle idee del Carducci giovanissimo, tra gli anni 1854 e 1857, come educatore e promotore dell'educazione popolare. Il secondo tratta invece del giudizio morale nella poesia carducciana, che si esprime nell'opposizione tra gli aggettivi «pio» e «reo». Nel terzo l'autore mette a confronto le «rime aspre e chiocce» di Dante con il verso che Carducci scelse per la sua poesia satirica e battagliera, che egli chiamò «roggio», concludendo che nel forgiare questo verso Giosue ebbe ben presente la lezione di quelle «rime» dantesche. Il quarto capitolo tratta delle teorie linguistiche di Carducci e della sua aspra polemica col «manzonismo de gli stenterelli», rappresentato da personaggi come il Bonghi e il Broglio, ma anche con lo stesso Manzoni. Seguono poi due capitoli dedicati a lettere scritte a Carducci da persone a lui vicine o vicinissime e riemerse negli anni più recenti: quelle rimaste dell'amata Lina (capitolo V) ed una del marito di lei il generale Domenico Piva (capitolo VI). Nel capitolo VII l'autore tratta dei «grandi comunicatori» nella poesia carducciana, cioè di personaggi, tra storici e leggendari, che Carducci fa parlare attribuendo loro grandi doti oratorie capaci di affascinare gli uditori. L'ottavo capitolo è dedicato alla storia e alla geografia del Piemonte in Carducci e intende mostrare l'immagine che il poeta (ma anche il prosatore) ha della regione nei suoi aspetti geografico paesaggistici e nella sua storia, e il ruolo di grande protagonista che egli riconosce al Piemonte come patria di Alfieri e stato attorno a cui si è potuta realizzare l'unità d'Italia. Infine il nono capitolo è dedicato alla raccolta dei dodici sonetti del "Ça ira" nella quale Carducci maturo e ormai tornato all'ovile monarchico torna a sacrificare alle "muse della barricata" e al mito della "grande rivoluzione", con una "rappresentazione epica" degli storici avvenimenti del grande e terribile mese di settembre 1792 che fece nascere la repubblica francese.
