Commissioned by King James I and his son, the future Charles I, following the destruction of the early Jacobean Banqueting Hall, their role in enhancing court spectacle came to an end with the fire that destroyed the rest of Whitehall Palace in 1598. The delay in executing the commission was due to matters of state, in which Rubens was involved as a diplomat. His stay in London in this capacity in 1629/30 made possible the realization of this commission. Rubens would have been aware that the Stuarts owed their position to the regal union of the crowns of England and Scotland, that his royal patron had now embraced his father?s pacific policy and that he was the more determined to impose an absolute rule, which his father had eloquently expounded in speeches ad treatises. These three themes form the central core of the cycle which glorified the reign of the late king, James I. The cycle presented Rubens with a great challenge, not only because of the novelty of the subject matter, but also because of the formal problems presented by the huge scale of the work. His work, which is enchanting to the eye, has always enjoyed international fame. Throughout his painting career of nearly sixty-years, de Heem continued to search for new and better ways to depict his subjects. He trained several pupils and had countless followers and imitators, in the Netherlands as well as abroad, and throughout the centuries. Dada est ensuite le premier mouvement d'avant- garde en comprendre la puissance. Ses membres se r v lent d'imp nitents collectionneurs. Hannah H ch consid re les cartes postales humoristiques comme les pr curseurs de ses photomontages. Quant Paul luard, la t te d'une importante collection de cartes postales de fantaisie, il consid re ce m dium comme un art part enti re. Rien d' tonnant d s lors ce que les surr alistes s'en emparent pour publier, en 1937, La carte surr aliste avec des oeuvres entre autres de Hans Bellmer, Andr Breton, Marcel Duchamp, Meret Oppenheim et Ren Magritte. Ce dernier y reviendra dans les ann es 1950 en lan ant la revue La Carte d'apr s nature. Dada et au surr alisme succ de la g n ration conceptuelle avec Marcel Broodthaers qui, dans la lign e de Duchamp, r invente la notion de mus e avec, comme symboles, des cartes postales de chefs-d'ouvre qu'il int gre, d s 1968, dans le premier ensemble de son Mus e d'Art moderne - D partement des Aigles. Une des autres clefs de ce m dium est trouver dans l' mergence du Mail Art, soutenu en grande partie par les membres de Fluxus, mais aussi par On Kawara qui envoie une carte postale une personne d termin e, avec son cachet et portant l'heure de son lever. Relevons galement les pratiques li es la reproductibilit et la force de diffusion de la carte postale. Hans-Peter Feldmann d cline ainsi la Tour Eiffel, tandis que Zoe L onard cr e un mur hypnotisant de reproductions des chutes du Niagara. D'autres artistes utilisent le livre pour voquer la narrativit des cartes postales, comme Martin Parr avec Boring Postcards USA ou encore Susan Hiller avec ses Rough Seas. Enfin, plus r cemment, les ouvres postconceptuelles de Jacqueline Mesmaeker et Oriol Villanova offrent de nouvelles voies d'investigation. Villanova, qui r side en Belgique, est sans doute l'artiste dont la cr ation s'inscrit le mieux dans l'appr hension et la compr hension de la carte postale.
