(HOUGHTON, SE -- CARTE-DE-VISITE) S E
Maj. S.E. Houghton.
Celebrated 19th century little person. Uncommon tinted carte-de-visite photograph 2 3/8" X 4" New York NY 1862. Very good. Decorative backstamp on patterned verso of "Ranger's Photograph Parlors / 28 East Genesee St. / Franklin Buildings / SYRACUSE / N.Y." On the recto within a fine gilt double-rule border a 2 1/8" X 3 3/8" albumen full-length portrait of Houghton has been affixed with fine print caption in red beneath: "Maj. S.E. Houghton / 20 Years Old--Height 31 Inches--Weight 41 lbs." The image is clear and there's a bit of hand tinting -- the top of a small table next to Houghton appears green and a flowing drapery next to that is purple. The card itself shows a slight bit of wear and mild age toning. Houghton along with the better known General and Mrs. Tom Thumb and lesser lights such as Lizzie A. Reed Houghton was another of the sideshow celebrities many of whom adopted military titles who satiated the American public's taste for novelty. This particular card was reissued a number of times both prior to and after this card the only change being in his age. unknown

(KELMSCOTT PRESS). (BINDINGS - ARTS & CRAFTS). MORRIS, WILLIAM
OF THE FRIENDSHIP OF AMIS AND AMILE
Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press 13 March 1894. ONE OF 500 COPIES on paper and 15 on vellum. 148 x 105 mm. 6 x 4 1/4". 2 p.l. 67 pp. <br/> CHARMING DARK GREEN MOROCCO ARTS & CRAFTS BINDING GILT AND ONLAID BY "M. E. B." stamp-signed and dated 1903 on rear turn-in covers with complex diapered design formed by tulip leaves and curling stems the compartments created containing tulip blossoms or gilt dot lozenge onlaid small purple morocco dots at intersections of leaves and stems gilt titling at center raised bands spine panels with gilt tulip design gilt lettering gilt-ruled turn-ins with tulip cornerpieces all edges gilt. In original suede-lined black morocco slipcase. With white-vine borders of twining grape clusters and leaves on the first two pages; foliated three-line woodcut initials throughout. Printed in red and black on handmade paper in Chaucer type. Peterson A-23; Sparling p. 157; Forman 151. For the binding: Tidcombe Women Binders p. 186; Collier "Biographical Sketch of Mary Ezit Bulkley" in Biographical Database of NAWSA Suffragists 1890-1920. A CHOICE COPY clean fresh and bright internally in a sparkling unworn binding.<br/> <br/> In a lovely Arts & Crafts binding likely by a female--and in any case an obviously very skilled binder--this Medieval tale in small format translated by Morris is one of the most charming of Kelmscott items. The plot revolves around the devoted friendship of knights Amis and Amile as demonstrated by the sacrifices they make for one another. Amis perjures himself to save Amile and is cursed with leprosy for this sin. When Amile learns that Amis can be cured by bathing in the blood of Amile's children he kills his offspring. Happily the murdered children are restored to life in recognition of Amile's devotion to his friend. The characteristically attractive Kelmscott printing adorned with the white-vine borders the press is famous for is perfectly complemented by the lovely Arts & Crafts binding. The "M. E. B." who executed our binding was probably Mary Ezit Bulkley 1856-1947 who worked out of the Hillside Bindery named for its location in Hillside Missouri near St. Louis. She had trained in Chicago in the late 1880s under Cobden-Sanderson's pupil Ellen Gates Starr 1859-1940 whose own bindings were of very high quality see for example her Doves Bible item #196 in our Catalogue 73. Our pupil clearly learned well from her teacher/pupil as the present volume is extraordinarily charming as a reflection of the binder's considerable delicacy in design and precision in execution. Tidcombe tells us that in addition to her work on books Bulkley wrote articles on binding for the publications "The Book Lover" and "The Progressive Printer." In addition she was a major player in the suffrage movement in Missouri. She was an active member of the St. Louis Equal Suffrage League particularly as a writer and editor of the league's monthly publication "Missouri Woman." Her pamphlet to women voters "Aid to the Woman Voter in Missouri" was so well-regarded that it was adapted for general voter education after the passing of the 19th Amendment. Kelmscott Press unknown

(PRINT)
Drame et Opera
Moscow: N.p. 1892. Plate X from a set of twenty loose black and white prints originally sold as a set in a portfolio printed in Moscow in 1892. This untitled set of large high quality photographic prints each measures 25" X 18" commemorates some unidentified imperial autograph collection with each print picturing a montage of autographs in specific collecting fields. Subject matters represented include many of the classic areas of autograph collecting: scientists several different artists musicians actors opera performers ballet stars writers and poets statesmen and more. While the signed photographs usually cartes-de-visite letters and other documents depicted in each montage are international in scope there tend to be more Russian go figure! and French persons. "Drame et opera" is a handsome heavy stock print consists of a grouping of ten cartes-de-visite or cabinet size photographs eight of which are nicely signed and the other two of which have a signature or ANS overlapping. Depicted are Pauline Lucca G. Fedotoff Eleonora Duse P. Strepetoff N. Wassilieff M. Slavine Marcella Zembrich-Stengel N. Nikouline Alma Fohstrom and Medea Figuener. Duse's is the largest image and takes center stage. All have been artfully arranged hodgepodge-style atop a background of a watercolor scene featuring an eclectic combination of flowers a putti a Greek stage mask a lyre a stage fan etc. Very good. Minor soiling and several small and discreet edge tears that would easily mat out. Overall quite handsome and striking with large untrimmed margins. These pre-revolutionary prints from the heyday of the czars -- all in handsome clean condition -- are seldom encountered in this country and come direct from our contact. All signatures depicted on these images are remember photographic reproductions of their signatures -- not authentic original signatures. unknown
