(Arts & Crafts Movement). Anscombe, Isabelle and Charlotte Gere
Art & Crafts in Britain and America
New York NY: Rizzoli 1978. Hardcover. VG- book shows minor age toning on top third of text block all pages clear and intact - dust jacket shows minimal wear at edges. Red cloth boards with gold gilt lettering on spine black and color illustrated dust jacket with white lettering 232 pp. mostly bw illustrations with some in color. "The Arts and Crafts movement grew out of the reaction against 19th century industrialization and the decline in quality resulting from mass-production. The ideals of the movement's founders William Morris and John Ruskin found a practical outlet in the formation of art guilds which like their medieval counterparts provided workshops and meetings-places for the fastidious craftsman. The aims and ideals of the Arts and Crafts were not confined to Britain: the parallel movement in America was equally important and influential. Both countries experienced a flowering of small village-based craft communities and a rapid interchange of ideas followed the transatlantic visits of a number of important designers . The history of the Arts and Crafts movement is here traced in detail from its inception to decline in both Britain and America examing fully its aims achievements and political relevance . These are profusely illustrated by examples of works in wood metal glass ceramics and fabrics beautifully photographed in both color and black and white many of which are published for the first time." - dust jacket description. THE DEBUTANTE
Chicago: Reilly & Britton Co. ca.1912. Octavo. Bound in original coarse tan cloth with a repeating pattern of small stylized roses in ochre orange and forest green on the cover and spine gilt titles. Printed in soft shades of mint green and blush coral. This handsome book has 191 pages intended for the recording of events and people in the life of a young girl about to step into the wide world. The illustrations and endleaves reflect the strong influence of Arts and Crafts as well as Art Nouveau design and ornament. A pristine copy of a scarce title from one of the leading publishers of the day. There is a curious contemporary inscription on the front free endpaper. "Merry Christmas "Harry" from Dot." The lengthy inscription is full of references that are obviously shared secrets amongst friends with "Harry" certainly being a pet name for a young lady. Only one page has an entry "Dancing Parties". Dated February 18 1916 the writer talks about attending a party with Cushman Jordan and having a "perfectly peachy" time. "Harry" discusses her dances her dress and the electric lights. WITH 61 ILLUSTRATIONS BY PAUL AVRIL comprised of 20 IN THREE STATES: plain India-proof and colored and one in single state all with tissue guards. ◆Spine faintly sunned otherwise A FINE COPY as fresh and bright as one could hope for.

This is a fine luxury volume attractively printed on Japanese vellum with immense margins beautifully bound in inlaid morocco and well illustrated with a series of engravings in multiple states that were considered to be some of the most attractive of the period. Featuring gallant drawings by the celebrated illustrator Avril 1849-1928 this substantial novel tells of a regicide undertaken to restore the honor of a queen in ancient Greece. Édouard-Henri later changed to Paul Avril studied art in various Paris salons including the École des Beaux Arts. According to Ray Avril "was a witty and ingenious artist" and a prolific one as well. His greatest achievement is considered to be his illustrations for the first edition in French of "De Figuris Veneris" a manual of classical erotology. Théophile Gautier 1811-72 was one of the most popular writers of his time and a noted champion of art for art's sake. The Société des Beaux Arts produced opulent volumes notable for the fine printing on deluxe paper stock illustrations by noted artists of the day and sumptuous bindings with many inlays and gilt. While the bindings were unsigned they were clearly produced by one of the premier Belle Epoque ateliers. The present handsome English language edition appears from time to time in the market but not normally with plates in multiple states and rarely in such an animated and perfectly preserved binding. (BINDINGS - ARTS & CRAFTS-STYLE). EWALD, HERMAN FREDERIK
THE STORY OF WALDEMAR KRONE'S YOUTH
Edinburgh: Edmonston and Douglas 1867. First Edition in English. 184 x 121 mm. 7 1/4 x 4 3/4". Two volumes.
ATTRACTIVE ARTS & CRAFTS-STYLE DARK GREEN MOROCCO ELABORATELY GILT each cover with 40 gilt lotus flowers in five vertical rows of eight the flowers all flanked by a gilt dot in each of the four corners raised bands spine panels with similar floral decoration gilt titling and turn-ins all edges gilt. â—†Green spines inevitably sunned to an olive brown joints and corners a little rubbed very isolated minor foxing but a fine copy--clean and fresh internally the appealing binding lustrous and without significant wear.

This bildungsroman by one of the most widely read authors in 19th century Denmark is offered here in a binding associated with one of the most influential binders of the 20th century. Originally issued in Danish in 1861 this first work by Herman Frederik Ewald 1821-1908 is the story of a rather vain young poet Waldemar Krone his rejection of the good provincial girl who loves him and his ill-fated infatuation with a flighty countess. When the countess throws him over for a French marquis Krone comes to recognize the worth of Ida who still loves him. They are happily married while the unfortunate countess discovers her husband is a fraud before she dies in childbirth. While this and the two works that followed had contemporaneous settings Ewald later became known for his meticulously researched historical novels. "Waldemar" is a surprisingly uncommon work: OCLC locates just six copies three in the United States. The binding appears to have been executed by an amateur who was almost certainly a pupil of Douglas Cockerell as a pencilled note on the front flyleaf of volume I asserts. The stamped titling on the spines is too uneven to have been Cockerell's own work though the intricate floral tooling on the boards is well done; in any case the lotus flower stamp used on these covers is identical with the tool used for item #282 in Maggs Catalogue 1212 a book bound by Cockerell ca. 1902 and with that used in figures 104-107 in Cockerell's own "Bookbinding and the Care of Books." The design is quite similar to figure 104 in that work one in which Cockerell demonstrates how tools can be combined and repeated to create a pattern. Cockerell 1870-1945 was generally considered to be the leading and most respected binder of his day and through his work his teaching and his publications he probably exerted "more influence on bookbinding practice and design than any one man has had before." DNB An apprentice for Cobden-Sanderson when the latter began his Doves Bindery in 1894 Cockerell set up his own workshop in 1897. During these early years he was appointed teacher of bookbinding at the London County Council Central School of Arts & Crafts where he taught Francis Sangorski and George Sutcliffe.
