Miniature 'thumb bibles' such as this one were abridged versions of the Bible intended for children and decorated with pictures. Only four libraries in the world hold this edition per OCLC Worldcat's records. Pencil ownership inscription on front pastedown reading "Sallie Hitch's Book Presented By Her Father". Sallie practices her name on the rear endpaper and leaves a small pencil doodle. Textblock tight though front hinge has separated from the textblock. Covers whole. Faint titles to spine. Re-sold to the women's prisoners of the Insane Asylum at Philadelphia where the poor women when 'good' are allowed to play with it." Unrecorded in OCLC we assume this was printed for private distribution by a member of the Bacon or Howland family. Two small spots on lower board otherwise about fine. First edition of the only miniature to appear under any of the Grabhorn imprints. One of 400 copies printed in black red and blue on English mould-made paper. An historical essay concerning miniatures by the former librarian at Brown University and president of the American Library Association. The type was originally set for Bruce Rogers by Mackenzie and Harris but the proofs arrived the day Rogers died 21 May 1957. Bound in pictorial gilt decorated blue cloth depicting the sun and stars amidst highly stylized gilt title. a.e.g. 70mm x 80mm. First Edition. Illustrated throughout with chromolithographic floral vignettes en texte. Printed at Nuremberg by E. Nister. A delicate brilliantly executed example of late 19th century miniature book design this title presents biblical quotations in a devotional format- with one phrase for each morning and evening of a month. Lovely chromolithographs are interspersed throughout the text. This title is exceptionally rare with OCLC listing no libraries possessing a copy of it. Indeed OCLC lists the only known copy as being in the collection of famed miniature book collector Ruth E. Adomeit. Front cover a bit rubbed and darkened with gilt decoration somewhat dulled. Like condition affecting gilded edges. Previous owner's pencil gift inscription to verso of front free endsheet. Sporadic light foxing throughout.
