Red pebbled cloth with gilt-stamped 'Photographs' on upper board; decorative corner devices; light hand-soiling edge fading and small scattered spots. The album contains twelve large albumen prints each mounted to heavy card on original publisher's hinged leaves. Photographs measure approx. 5.25 x 8 inches. Some gentle toning at margins as typical for 19th-century albumen. Bindings firm and sound.<br /> <br /> A handsome period album of Scottish topographical photography produced by the celebrated Dundee firm Valentine & Sons one of the three major Scottish commercial studios of the 19th century. A 19th-century album of twelve Valentine & Sons albumen views of Scotland including Edinburgh Castle Holyrood the Forth Bridge and the Trossachs-classic compositions by one of Britain's great commercial studios.<br /> <br /> James Valentine-along with G. W. Wilson-was a foundational figure in Scottish commercial photography; his Dundee studio shaped public visual culture and later became one of the world's major postcard producers.<br /> <br /> His Dundee studio systematized the photographic depiction of Scottish landscape architecture and tourism shaping how Scotland was visually imagined in the late 19th century. Il presente manuale viene incontro alle esigenze degli studenti del primo biennio superiore, ma anche di tutti coloro che si approcciano per la prima volta allo studio e alla traduzione del latino. Per favorire un graduale e solido miglioramento, oltre che una più cosciente comprensione dei meccanismi di traduzione, è presente un'ampia sezione di schede grammaticali con numerosi e puntuali esempi, intercalate da esercizi svolti. La seconda parte del libro, attraverso una vasta serie di passi ordinati per autore, fornisce un valido strumento di verifica delle capacità interpretative, grazie all'ampia scelta di scrittori e opere. Sono così presenti versioni tratte dagli scritti del mitografo Igino, dell'epitomatore Eutropio e del biografo Cornelio Nepote, dai capolavori di Cesare, dai contenuti aneddotici, talvolta romanzeschi, regalatici dagli storici di età giulio-claudia (Curzio Rufo, Valerio Massimo, Velleio Patercolo), ma anche dal retore ed epitomatore Giustino e dalla Historia Augusta. Si passa poi ad autori più impegnativi per quanto riguarda la difficoltà di traduzione, come Cicerone, Sallustio, Livio, Seneca, Quintiliano, Tacito, Apuleio, i due Plinii e Svetonio. Di tutti gli autori riportati è stato tracciato un breve profilo biobibliografico. Per quanto riguarda il dibattuto problema della traduzione, sulla scorta di una esperienza ormai più che trentennale, possiamo affermare che ogni questione sul tipo migliore di traduzione, letterale o libera, si rivela del tutto sterile. Una traduzione, pur sempre scolastica, di un testo antico non può certo ridursi ad una meccanica trasposizione di termini e di costrutti, nell'intento di raggiungere impossibili coincidenze fra lingue diverse. D'altra parte, nulla può giustificare stravolgimenti sul piano sintattico e stilistico, al fine di evitare la deprecata banalità della traduzione. Questa deve mirare anzitutto ad una esatta interpretazione del testo, ma anche ad una forma - la più corretta possibile - capace soprattutto di attenuare le differenze fra il sistema linguistico-culturale latino e quello italiano, che da esso deriva. I passi contenuti nella raccolta sono riportati quasi sempre integralmente dalle opere dei vari autori proposti. Sono presenti, infine, alcune schede culturali con note di vita romana, utili per favorire una piena e corretta interpretazione del testo latino.

Ornate silver close-clasp with silver studs to the corners of the back panel. White silk doublure. Generalized wear to the extremities with a closed tear to 1 side of the spine. Remains uncommonly well-preserved. ; 8vo 8"" - 9"" tall; Many have the original tissue-guards still intact. All but 1 seem to have been produced at the Nymetz studio and printed on stiff card. 1 was produced at the H.A Clapham studio in Swansea England likely a close relative with 2 young children of the main Pennsylvania family. 1 further postcard portrait was produced at the Dittrich studio Atlantic City N.J. again likely to be a relative.
