Author and artist Shufelt grew up in the Midwest where his formal art instruction began at the age of ten. He developed an affinity for drawing that led him to embark on a successful career in illustration. At the age of forty when the world of commercial art seemed to offer no new challenges Shoofly moved his family to a remote Arizona ranch to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a cowboy artist. There he discovered he would first have to become a cowboy. Shoofly's drawings are the result of twenty years in the saddle as a working cowboy gathering subject material for works of art that celebrate and preserve a vanishing aspect of the American West that he has come to know so well -- the cowboy way of life with all its romance and reality. Through superb artistry that captures emotion and action Shoofly depicts the joint-aching labor of cowboying - all done for the privilege of looking at the rear end of a cow while riding a good horse and being solitary independent and proud. The drawings selected for this book demonstrate the skill and talent that has won Shufelt widespread recognition as one of the leading figures in cowboy art. With his use of the purest and most intimate medium -- the pencil -- Shoofly proves that a pencil drawing can be an art form in its own right not simply a preliminary exercise or study. Shoofly's unerring sense of composition his stunning rendition of values and textures and his sensitivity to mood and gesture are all evident here. Interwoven with these drawings is Shoofly's own account of his career as a cowboy artist including glimpses of his experiences as a working cowboy and some of his thoughts on the creative process. He lives in a New Mexico ranching community in the foothills of the Black Range where he continues to fulfill his dream of creating art that embodies the cowboy legacy.
