‎The activities of Rogier van der Weyden (1399/1400-1464) were much wider in scope than the well-known painted oeuvre that has been the subject of so many publications. ‎A detailed history of the city of Aphrodisias is only just beginning to emerge as the results of many years of excavations are gradually analyzed. The excavated physical remains of the city show many phases of its life, from prehistoric to Greek Roman and Byzantine. Throughout these centuries many changes took place. Even the name of the city was changed from Aphrodisias to Stauropolis, later to Caria, and eventually, in modern Turkish, to Geyre. ‎Het werk van het kunstenaarsechtpaar Jean en Marianne Bremers, dat u in dit prachtig uitgegeven boek wordt getoond, is moeilijk te beoordelen. Met de keuze voor de bronzen hebben zij niet de eenvoudigste weg gekozen om hun naam te vestigen. Je kunt er geen wanden mee sieren. Bronzen ziet men als elementen in de openbare ruimten, meestal als herinnering aan vorsten, staatslieden, verzetsstrijders, glorieuze legeraanvoerders of admiraals. Overigens: waarom worden te respecteren bevelhebbers van de verliezende partij in hun moederland zelden geeerd met een beeld? Bronzen koppen van teruggetreden bankiers, toneelspelers en dirigenten, van burgemeesters etc. worden te over gevonden in kantoren, schouwburgen, gemeentehuizen en musea. Mooi gemaakt, zegt men dan. Goed gelijkend, vakwerk, maar kunst, is het kunst? Over de beantwoording van deze vraag zijn tijdschriften volgeschreven. De laatste decennia waren kunstcritici (wat een raar woord eigenlijk: critici) van oordeel, dat kunst voor alles vernieuwend moest zijn. Donatello?s beroemde David uit 1432(Florence, Bargello) is door de durf om na bijna duizend jaar onthouding te kiezen voor een mannelijk naakt inderdaad baanbrekend geweest, maar met onze ogen bezien is het gewoon een fraai beeld van een wellicht wat geidealiseerde mooie jongen. Aan dit aspect van vernieuwing heeft Johan Huizinga in 1935 een boeiende beschouwing gewijd in zijn beroemde essay In de schaduwen van morgen, een diagnose van het geestelijke lijden van deze tijd. Hij ziet in de trend de rede in versvorm ? herkenbaar van wat op doek en in beeld wordt voorgesteld ? uit te bannen in ruil voor volstrekte vrijheid, voor verzaking van elke band met rede en natuur, een risico voor excessen. Huizinga noemt het een voortdurend haken naar originaliteit een van de kwalen van de moderne tijd. Nu was Huizinga onder invloed van economische malaise en opkomend nazisme een cultuurpessimist geworden en er is met name na de Tweede Wereldoorlog waardering gegroeid voor zeggingskracht, die perfectie te boven gaat (Chagall), voor non-figuratieve kunst ook van soms opmerkelijke kwaliteit. Maar dat binnen deze ontwikkeling ?ismen zijn gegroeid, ?napraterij? omdat de vorm van het vormloze nu eenmaal in de mode was, wordt thans hoogstens schoorvoetend toegegeven. Misschien vinden critici, als zij al niet bij voorbaat de ogen sluiten, de aanpak van de Bremers een repetitie: zwevende figuren, slanke vrouwengestalten, sterke mannen. Doet men hun dan onrecht, ja, maar zij wijzen ons onbewust en misschien ongewild wel in de goede richting. Naar mijn mening kan het werk van JeanMarianne het beste geplaatst worden in de stroming van het manierisme, zoals dat zich in West-Europa tijdens de overgang van renaissance naar barok manifesteerde en waarvan Parmigianino?s Madonna met de lange hals (Florence, Uffizi) een voorbeeld par excellence is. Langgerekte menselijke proporties, gekunstelde poses, en een ietwat sensuele verfijning zijn ook bij de Bremers terug te vinden. Maar waarom staat de naakte jongeling van de befaamde Nederlandse manierist Adriaen de Vries(circa 1545-1626), die werkte aan de hoven van keizer Rudolf 2 te Praag en van de Deense koning Christiaan 4 en aan wie het Rijksmuseum te Amsterdam in 1998 een grote tentoonstelling wijdde, op een ereplaats in het Bayerisches National Museum in Munchen en haalt men de schouders op voor zo?n figuur in het atelier van het boomrijke Brabantse dorp Helvoirt?Ervaart men dat als het verschil tussen renaissance en een neo-imitatie, zoals tussen gotiek en neogotiek? Wekt de uitdaging van technische hoogstandjes voor het vinden van een balans bij gecompliceerde constructies, die van hun werk uitgaat, ergernis? Zouden zij te veel willen laten zien: kijk eens hoe goed we kunnen modelleren en slijpen, hoe bekwaam we zijn in het brons gieten?Maar als dat al zo zou zijn, wat ik niet geloof, dan nog lopen zij in de pas van de oprechte kunstenaar en componist, die zich zijn talenten bewust is. Anders begint men er immers niet aan. Hoe het oordeel ook kan uitvallen: erkenning van het vakmanschap is dan tocht het minste, dukt mij. Voor de artiste komt de artisan. Dat gold zo van zeer oude tijden en het geldt nog steeds. Wanneer men zou wijzen op repeterende elementen, dan ervaar ik dat niet minder bij de zo bewierookte Piet Mondriaan (1872-1944). Zijn abstrahering van de werkelijkheid leidt mijns inziens tot een herhaling binnen een stramien van horizontalen en verticalen, waarbij lijnen wat verschuiven, zich splitsen, verdikken, verdunnen, waarbij standaardkleuren binnen de rechthoeken van plaats wisselen. Bewonderaars juichen juist om deze kleine variaties, maar na een zaal ervaar ik het als steeds meer van hetzelfde, als kunst(je). Trouwens: bij de Bremers zijn er binnen het geijkte patroon opmerkelijke verschillen te zien, als de schouwer ze tenmiste wil zien. Zelf ben ik wat minder gecharmeerd van de vliegende figuren. Ik vind ze te druk, enigszins ?bovennatuurlijk? als barokengelen, maar realiseer mij tevens dat dit hun bedenkers nu juist onderscheidt van andere beeldende kunstenaars. Als men al bang is voor herhaling, dan zijn juist deze mensen, de zwaartekracht ontstegen, zo kenmerkend voor hun werkplaats. In hun gehele oeuvre zit trouwens beweging, de spanning van spieren, de draaiing van het lichaam, het strekken van de armen, het aandachtig schouwen van het oog.Terugkerend naar het begin herhaal ik de vraag: Schept het echtpaar Bremers kunst? Wanneer het werk van alom bewonderde ?herscheppers? van het menselijk lichaam als Giambologna (1524-1608), Adriaen de Vries, Artus Quellinus (1609-1668), Francois Rude (1784-1855), Auguste rodin (1840-1917), tegen wie JeanMarianne enigszins aanleunen, en George Minne (1866-1941) voor alles kunst is, omdat zij het vak verstonden, dan mag het werk, hoe onderscheiden ook, zonder de minste twijfel kunst genoemd worden en dat te meer nu er een herwaardering groeit voor figuratieve vormgeving in plastiek, in schilder- en tekenkunst. Het mag weer. De Bremers gingen op dit pad door toen het eigenlijk niet mocht. Als vakmanschap meesterschap is, dan zijn zij het meesterschap waardig. Dit boek toont het aan.‎

‎Wandering is een project van Frank Eerhart, Teun Kuipers en Jan Radersma waarin zij aspecten van het zoeken, het zwerven, het ontmoeten en het verblijven integreren. Ze vertrekken alle drie vanuit eerder gebruikte materialen, ijzer of hout dat in hun handen omgevormd wordt tot karakteristieke werken op paneel of eigenzinnige sculpturen. Niet altijd is er een scherpe grens tussen het twee- en driedimensionale. Bij Eerhart leiden de assemblages van de gevonden objecten tot portretten en gestalten die door de gebruikte materialen sporen van een verleden blijven dragen en die door minimale ingrepen hun eigen expressie krijgen. Bij Kuipers zijn het composities door stapelingen van gevonden vormen die door hun volume een plek markeren en vooral via de subtiele huid tot de verbeelding spreken. Voor Radersma symboliseren het huis en de plek tijdelijke verblijfplaatsen. De ruimte en het landschap vormen aanleiding tot een verscheidenheid aan stemmingen, uitgedrukt in lichtval, kleur, geintensiveerd door pigmenten die in hun relief ook de zwaarte van de stemmingen bepalen. Eerder (2008) exposeerden Eerhart en Radersma met het project Territorium waarin de relatie tussen personage en omgeving werd onderzocht. Kuipers en Eerhart maakten in het voorjaar van 2011 de expositie INbeelden, een onderzoek tussen taal en beeldtaal. De expositie Wandering toont een interactie van het werk van drie kunstenaars waarin de spanning tussen vervreemding en thuisvoelen, tussen vrijheid en gebondenheid in een verscheidenheid aan beelden voelbaar is. De objecten en geschilderde landschappen staan op zichzelf, maar versterken door het combineren een hang naar verbondenheid die mede veroorzaakt wordt door subtiel zichtbare littekens van verleden tijden.‎

Dit 'geheel' wil, in samenhang met de sculpturen en de aquarellen, een poetisch-sacrale 'ruimte' oproepen, waarbij de mens met de verschillende niveau's, gebieden en krachten van dit of zijn universum verbonden wordt, zowel voor hun dramatisch karakter als voor hun harmonieuze mogelijkheden. Deze "ruimte" zou "Een 'Huis' van de Mens" kunnen heten, of een kosmisch-spiritueel Schouw-Spel in de zin van een 'spel' om te schouwen, bezinnend en speels tegelijk. Gaf sinds 1980 regelmatig persoonlijke tentoonstellingen en nam deel aan talrijke groepstentoonstellingen. Maakte enkele kleinere en grotere sculpturengroepen. Werkte tussen april 1993 en september 2003 hoofdzakelijk aan zes monumentale beelden in opdracht. Realiseert geregeld groepen aquarellen zoals "Akkoorden van Verbinden en Verscheiden" of "Portretten van kunstenaars" of aquarelgroepen bij belangrijke sculpturen.‎
