Wilson Richard
Richard Wilson. Jamming Gears
Born in London in 1953 to a family of builders and artists, Richard Wilson creates works that often come closer to engineering or even architecture than to traditional sculpture. Typically he transforms the viewer's environment into something unsettling and strange through interventions that not only alter the physical space but also interfere with our perception of it. Perhaps his best-known work is 20:50, currently on view at the Saatchi Gallery in London. A room is flooded with oil that has a highly reflective surface. Into the oil is built a kind of narrow pier down which one person can walk, the oil perilously close to their body. So reflective is the oil that the room induces a strong feeling of disorientation. In addition to such large-scale pieces, Wilson makes films and sculpture, takes photographs, and stages performance events. He has been a formative influence on a generation of younger artists.

This book is part of a Tate Publishing series focused on living artists. Generously illustrated, accessible, and affordable, the Modern Artists series will build to become an essential reference for all those interested in contemporary visual culture. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition. — Testi: Wilson Andrew, Cotter Suzanne et al. Schütte Thomas
Thomas Schütte. Scenewright Gloria in Memoria In Medias Res
Thomas Schütte is a catalog of works by this contemporary German artist. Schütte studied under Gerhard Richter, Benjamin Buchloh, and Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Düsseldorf Academy in the 1970s. He comes from that strong conceptual background, but as his career matured the emotional content of his work evolved and became much more potent. Schütte's work is incredibly eclectic: ceramic figures, architectural models, drawings, outdoor sculptures, photographs, and installations. A recent work, Big Spirits (1996), is a collection of larger-than-life-size aluminum figures that seem to be morphing before one's eyes. They are at once ghost, human, and machine. Also riveting is The Innocents (1994), a series of photographs of the heads of handmade figurines, and United Enemies, A Play in Ten Scenes (1993)--offset lithographs, also of figurines wrapped in Schütte's clothes. His watercolors are beautiful, ranging from drawings of fruit to portraits of women. Whatever the project, Schütte is tapped in to a particular humanity. Included in the book are essays by Julian Heynen and Angela Vettese, an interview with James Lingwood, and an essay by Roman philosopher Seneca, chosen by the artist. There is also a story by Schütte--printed in English for the first time. — Testi: Cooke Lynne, Schütte Thomas et al. F.to: 28x24; pagg. 160; 174 COL 4 bicromie 6 BN; rileg. rigida con sovracoperta. Sculpture projects muenster 07
Been to enough biennials? Skulptur Projekte Munster only happens every 10 years. This, its fourth iteration (following 1977, 1987 and 1997), invites artists from all over the world--many of whom are returning to the city and the event--to create new site-specific works. Thus Michael Asher brings back his trailer and parks in sites he first sussed out in 1977, continuing to explore the conflicts between rigid form and mobile space, and to document the dramatic transformation of the urban environment over four decades. Guy Ben-Ner equips bicycles with screens and places them around the city; by pedaling, participants control the speed and direction of a film of the artist doing the same. Guillaume Bijl mocks up an archaeological site 25 feet square and 18 feet deep, whose steep walls imitate layers of soil. Visitors climb a grassy hill to peer into the pit from a balustrade; in the pit, a 14-foot, shingle-roofed spire topped by a weathercock preens. This extensive book inspired by and documenting the festival opens on 35 sections between 4 and 16 pages long, each designed by the artist and illuminating his or her work in text and images. Its second half comes in the form of a glossary of more than 100 key concepts linked to the subject of art in public spaces; artists, art historians, philosophers, urbanists, architects, sociologists and other writers weighing in with definitions from their respective disciplinary perspectives. Participants include Francis Alys, Isa Genzken, Mike Kelley, Rosemarie Trockel, Bruce Nauman, Martha Rosler and Pae White. — Testi: Konig Kasper, Plath Carina et al. Beyond Modern Sculpture. The effects of science and technology on the sculpture of this century
A pioneering critical study of the origins of modern sculptural form--the works that blink, move, create sound, and otherwise make new demands on space.
