CAMERON D.K.
The so-called 'Crofter' trology complete. Comprising: 'The Ballad and the Plough', 'Willie Gavin, Crofter Man' and 'The Cornkister Days'.
3 vols., 8vo., First Edition, with numerous plates, neat contemporary inscription on front free endpaper of second volume; cloth, gilt backs, all very good, clean copies in the dustwrapper. Portrait of a Vanished Lifestyle' (1980) and 'The Cornkister Days. Portrait of a Land and its Rituals' (1984). David Kerr Cameron's masterly study of the old Scottish rural way of life is carefully structured. In the first volume he tells of the larger farms or 'farmtouns'; in the second he examines the more numerous smallholdings or crofts. In his final volume he broadens the focus to include the life of the fields, the seasons and rituals, and the culture of the agrarian background in general. In its scope, its detail and its rigorous objectivity the trilogy is unique. A handsome set of an important contribution to the agricultural history of Scotland.
