This is an exhibition catalog organized by the National Portrait Gallery Smithsonian Institution in association with Manhattan Sites and Sagamore Hill National Hsitoric Site National Park Service United Sates Department of the Interior. The exhibition tour included the National Portrait Gallery October 27 1998-February 7 1999; Federal Hill National Memorial New York City March 19-July 4 2999 and Hillwood Art Museum C. W. Post Campus Long Island University New York August 15-November 14 1999. The author writes that the exhibition is a "portrait narrative of the man whose progressive ideas about social justice representative democracy and America's role as a world leader still largely define our national character." When Theodore Roosevelt became the 26th U. S. President after the assassination of William McKinley he had already been a State Assemblyman Civil Service Commissioner Police Commissioner Assistant Secretary of the United States Navy Governor and war hero before becoming McKinley's Vice President. After deciding not to run for President in the 1908 election Roosevelt planned a year-long African safari. Roosevelt wooed the Smithsonian Institution to join the expedition by offering to contribute wildlife specimens for its collections. Arrangements were made for the Roosevelt party to do the hunting and shooting while the Smithsonian scientists and taxidermists supervised the preservation and shipping of the specimens back for research and exhibition. ‎London: Publish'd 7th June 1794 by J Barber No 9 Sweeting's-Alley Royal-Exchange. 1794. Broadsheet map sheet size 54.5 x 43 cms; map 40.5 x 27 cms within frame 44 x 39 cms. The frame and the symbols for towns and cities are printed from a woodblock; placenames the title and the text in the side-panels is letterpess; the coastline rivers and the political border between Austrian and French territory have been inked in by hand. Laid on linen very light staining and some wear at the folds ‘Brigton’ in a contemporary hand on the cover. The inclusion of Paris as the Allied objective proved somewhat premature. The Revolutionary French armies swept the Austrians and British back accross the Rhine and as far north as Hanover. Austria lost control of the Spanish Netherlands modern Belgium and the Dutch Republic was toppled in favour of the Batvian Republic a French client state. Octavo. 32pp. Large folding wood-engraved frontispiece; 38 wood-engraved illustrations of silhouette profiles one map and two illustrations. In the original plain pale purple wrappers. Wrapper lightly toned a few small chips spine mostly perished with some glue residue along the spine. Scattered light foxing and slight offsetting from wrapper on one blank panel of the folded frontispiece and onto the final page. Very good with the striking folding frontispiece very bright and attractive. Neatly housed in a cloth chemise and quarter morocco and cloth slipcase gilt. <br /> <br /> Barber's highly important history documenting what one historian called "the most famous of all shipboard revolts" published in the same year that the New Haven court ruled that the slave traffickers had no claim on the Amistad rebels and preceding the publication of Adams and Baldwin's 1841 Supreme Court arguments. The work features Barber's famous large frontispiece engraving depicting the uprising on the ship and the death of the Amistad's captain; along with Barber's 38 engraved profiles of the Amistad rebels made during his visits to the New Haven jail where they were incarcerated. The work also features a map of Mende on the West African coast an engraving of a Mende village and an engraving of nine Amistad Africans chained in the ship bound to Cuba.<br /> <br /> In 1839 53 enslaved Africans aboard the Amistad rose up near Cuba killed the captain and one other crew member and captured their slavers José Ruiz and Pedro Montes. The new crew took control of the vessel and sailed it to Long Island where they were captured by the U.S. Navy and ultimately incarcerated in New Haven.
