Nouvelle édition revue et corrigée, enrichie de la vie du Tasse : ornée de son portrait en frontispice par Chasselas et de vingt belles gravures. Paris, Bossange, Masson et Besson, An IX, 1803, 2 volumes in-8, plein veau brun, décor de filets droit à encadrement réalisés à la roulette sur les plats, les champs des cartons sont ornés d'une roulette à points, les bords des contres plats sont ornés d'une roulette avec un motifs de grecs, dos long orné d'un semi de fleurons azuré, et de deux pièces de titre en basane d'un brun foncé doré, lxxxvj-353 et 354 pp. + errata.‎

‎T.I, chants I à X ; T.II, chants XI à XX. Ce long poème épique de la Renaissance, en vingt chants, raconte la lutte et les amours de Renaud, chevalier chrétien, et Armide, guerrière musulmane. Ce récit fictionnalisé des croisades oppose les devoirs de l'amour et de la religion : il est un des écrits les plus populaires en son temps, très prisé des peintres et illustrateurs. Ici la version illustrée par Jean-Jacques Le Barbier dit L'Aîné (1738-1826) : autodidacte, il est reçu à l'Académie des Beaux-arts, agréé peintre d'histoire. Ses oeuvres sont conservées aux Musée du Louvre, de Rouen, de Marseille... Il illustre Ovide, Rousseau, Dellile, et Le Tasse. Torquato Tasso dit Le Tasse (1544-1595) délaisse le droit pour la poésie ; remarqué pour son premier drame, "Renaud", 1562, il travaille pour la cour de Ferrare et écrit son livre le plus célèbre, "La Jérusalem délivrée" en 1575, puis "La Jérusalem conquise" 1593, qui n'est pas une suite mais une réécriture du 1er ouvrage, et se ressentant de sa raison. En effet, cette figure fascine longtemps les artistes par sa fin tragique. Il y a de nombreuses éditions illustrées de "La Jérusalem délivrée". Elle est traduite quoique de manière incomplète en français, en 1595, puis en 1626 ; ces traductions ne sont pas considérées. Une des meilleures traductions est celle de M. Le Brun en 1774, chez Musier : "traduction élégante et fidèle" (Brunet, V, 670) ; c'est cette traduction qui a été reprise pour l'édition illustrée par Barbier L'Aîné : "Cette édition est plus belle et meilleure que la précédente" (Brunet, V, 670). Légères taches à la reliure, petites taches et rousseurs.‎
