(Barber, Joseph)
War Letters of a Disbanded Volunteer. Embracing his Experiences as Honest Abe's Bosom Friend and Unofficial Adviser
New York: Frederic A. Brady 1864. 8vo. 312 pp. plus 1 p. ads. Frontispiece caricature of the author at work. Bound in green publisher's cloth gilt decoration of the author on front board blind tooled decorated cloth; binding showing some wear and discoloration. Owners signature of Rufus Munyan Co. D. 18. C.V. Company D 18th Connecticut Volunteers. First edition. Comical narrative by a delusionary "adviser" to Lincoln whose letters pointedly featured the absurdities of war and the madness of the public administration during the 1860's. Barber's view is reflective of many New York writers whose view of Lincoln and the war was decidedly Democratic challenging the ferocity of the Radical Republicans who controlled Washington. Written by the satirist Joseph Barber who also published Crumbs from the Round Table 1866 and The American Book of Ready Made Speeches 1866. The anonymous illustration which introduces the text captures the manic nature of the author with a statue of Lincoln looming over his shoulder Wright Fiction II 210. Allibone's Critical Dictionary of English Literature Suppliment I p. 89. Frederic A. Brady unknown

Wild Fowl Decoys
New York: The Derrydale Press 1934. First Edition ONE OF 55 LARGE-PAPER COPIES signed by Barber this being No. 22. 5 color plates one of them handcolored and 121 other illustrations. TOGETHER WITH BARBER'S ORIGINAL INK DRAWING FOR THE TITLE PAGE laid in. 1 vols. 4to. Original full red morocco gilt t.e.g. others uncut; very slight chipping to top of spine else a fine copy of a book seldom found approaching this condition. Half red morocco slipcase with Derrydale logo on spine and on upper cover leather label with chemise. 1 vols. 4to. "One of the most important books published by Connett." -- Siegel This is the large paper edition of this work. The regular trade edition was published at the same time by Windward House a sporting press started by Connett in 1933. Both editions used Barber's vignette on the the title page. From this drawing it appears that Connett liked the artist's Windward design and used in it the Derrydale edition: in the margin of the drawing Connett has pencilled "reduce 1/4 inch" and the drawing was photographically reduced to the smaller dimension for the large paper copies. A simplified version of the design was used on the Derrydale edition spine. One of the rarest and most desirable productions of the Derrydale Press and by virtue of the drawing a unique copy. Siegel 85; Frazier B-5-a The Derrydale Press unknown

Paris: La Vie Parisienne 1917. The September 1 1917 Issue 55e annee No 35. Illustrations by Rene Vincent; Henry Gerbault; Georges Barbier; Georges Leonnec; others uncredited. Text in French. Illustrated wraps folio 13.75" x 10.5" 19 pp. 770 through 789 for the volume plus covers. Slender but large: folio size. See scans. Some cover soiling wrinkling wear and very small scale chips; contents sharp bright about Very Good overall; nice condition for this thin-but-large fragile weekly. This particular issue also has a chip in the middle of the front cover see scan. Glossy covers; first and last few internal pages are on newsprint else all glossy. Rather spectacular full-page color illustrations in every issue in fact by the coterie of guys who knew how to do what you see here. In the case of this issue Rene Vincent; Henry Gerbault; Georges Barbier and Georges Leonnec are credited for the big stuff but some of the other very credit-worthy art is uncredited. See scans. Cute humor from the same mood as mutoscope cards or perhaps a bit only a bit more refined yields the cover art caption: "Sur Le Front De Mer / Son Mari est surement reparti.elle se baigne en maillot" approximately two women remarking that the risque-for-that-era bathiing suit of another young lady indicates her husband must be out of town; rear cover caption is World War I humor that escapes me but the image does not which see. Gentle titillation. Even the occasional partial nudity is rather tasteful and soft though humorously flirtatious. All of the full page efforts are eminently frame-able and at this time of a sensibility midway-evolved between nouveau and deco as is much of the uncredited b&w illustration. An original - and of course first and only edition - of the 9/1/1917 issue of this memorable and long-lived French weekly offering of very soft very artful light erotica. The captioned illustrations by the eminent "dessins" luminaries named above and others in their clan are what really "make" this issue as was generally the case through the era but cartoons serial fiction and around-town pieces nicely compliment those. Gorgeous oversized large color illustrations are what you collect these for. l-LNG1

La Vie Parisienne paperback

[Anne Rice] Wayland Barber, Elizabeth
The Mummies of Ürümchi
New York: W.W. Norton & Company 1999. First edition. 8vo. 240pp. Very good jacket shows some wear and has sticker residue to front cover with another sticker on spine. This copy from the library of author Anne Rice inscribed and dated 2013 on the ffep with some photographs tabbed throughout the text. A note on the front cover says "Jan 11 2012 - KEEP. This is very important. Mysterious. Excellent pix. Tall people.

Egyptian culture albeit often a watered-down "egyptomaniacal" view of its culture was undoubtedly a large influence on Rice's writings. The "Ramses the Damned" trilogy the latter two of which were co-authored with her son Christopher Rice regale the adventures of Ramses an Eqyptian Pharoah who was resurrected in Edwardian England after drinking an elixir of life. However her vampire novels also draw on Eqyptian mythological ideas like divine power and immortality and many characters parallel Egyptian gods and goddesses. This fascination seems to carry over to the Tarim mummies from the Ürümchi region as well. W.W. Norton & Company unknown

These exceptional images submitted to the superintendent for the George A. This revealing set of original photographs provide essential details of the stages of construction for the extraordinary Westchester-Biltmore Country Club. Bowman sought to create the quintessential 1920’s sportsman’s oasis easily reached by automobile or train from Manhattan which along with mechanics maids servers and gardeners eventually featured 45 holes of golf three polo fields bridle path horse racing track tennis courts and a casino. The images open with finishing the footings and foundation in Dec. 1920 with structural steel quickly arising by Dec. 30 1920. The photos show the massive winged structure taking shape steel i-beams set in place and stone and masonry facade installed in stages through August 1921. As shown in many of these photos the project moved quickly enough that the roof had been mostly completed and the facade finished by Jan. 1922 with a series showing snow-covered parking lot and scaffolds still carrying material up the side as the wings were finished staircases enclosed so that by April 1922 the main construction has been completed except for some work in the portico front entrance and finishing touches of masonry and architectural details. Fitzgerald’s Gatsby would have felt more than at home with the finished Club amidst the saltwater pool man-made lagoon 800 bathhouses and dance floor with the total build cost for the project exceedingly $ 6 million in 1922 or $ 100 million currently.
