This copy inscribed at the head of the Prologo by one of the translators "A mi primer coronel hoy entusiaste é ilustredo general Don Joaquín Milans del Bosch Abilio Barbero" To my first colonel today the enthusiastic and illustrious general Don Joaquín Milans del Bosch Abilio Barbero. "In 1908 two students of the Escuela Superior first lieutenants Abilio Barbero and Juan Seguí translated some parts of the treatise On War selected by themselves. The printing shop of the Sección de Hidrografía located at Calle de Alcalá No 56 in Madrid published a book of 268. and there were enough Spanish military authors who - distressed by the so-called "Disaster of 1898" in Cuba and the Philippines - disseminated the teachings of the great Prussian writer of treatises. Yet they kept looking for what could not be found in the work of Clausewitz: An obsession with infantry tactics and guidelines for colonial warfare and the protectorate wars in Africa. The complete Spanish text of On War was not available until the beginning of the Second World War. References to Clausewitz were made frequently in the lectures given at the academy of the army Escuela Superior del Ejército established in 1940 the older naval school Escuela de Guerra Naval and the more recently established academy of the air force Escuela Superior del Aire. Yet the critical stance taken by the British Liddell Hart and the French André Beaufre was widely spread" Baquer p. 313-14. Abilio Barbero Saldaña 1881-1940 entered the service in 1898 promoted second lieutenant 1901 rising to colonel by 1925. Served in the Rif War in Morocco 1921-26 his last promotions being on merit in the field. In 1936 he was made chief of staff of the third general inspectorate of the Army. He as the father of noted mediaeval historian Abilio Barbero de Aguilera. His co-translator Juan Seguí Almuzara 1888-1936 was military attaché to the Spanish embassies in Brussels and Paris during Primo de Rivera's dictatorship. After the declaration of the Second Republic in 1931 he retired to Melilla where he became leader of the Falange in Spanish Morocco heading the nationalist coup there on 18 July 1936. Returning to Spain he organized local landowners in Andalusia into a Policía Montada de Voluntarios Mounted Volunteer Police carrying out surveillance and repression in the rear of operations. He died in August when en route to Badajoz from Seville with a group of fellow officers the party being ambushed by Republican militiamen. The recipient Colonel Milans del Bosch 1854-1936 served n the Third Carlist War 1872-76 and in the Philippines Tagalog War 1897-98 where he fought alongside future dictator Miguel Primo de Rivera. He rose through the diplomatic ranks and entered the royal household becoming gentleman of the bedchamber to King Alfonso XIII subsequently he was posted to Madrid and Morocco where he was elevated to the rank of lieutenant general. In 1918 he became captain general of Catalonia and was the instigator of the use of military methods against the La Canadenca strike of 1919 which precipitated his enforced resignation. The king who tacitly supported his actions rewarded him for his loyalty with the position of head of the Casa Militar de la Casa Real. In 1924 he was named civil governor of Barcelona by his friend now self-proclaimed dictator Primo de Rivera. In the years that followed Milans del Bosch was the head of a violent anti-Catalanist campaign directed at all Catalan cultural institutions. On the fall of the dictatorship in 1930 he was removed from office. When the coup of July 1936 failed he chose not to flee Madrid and was arrested and executed a month later.
