Hij is tegelijk de belangrijkste ontwerper van het merk en de bedenker van het briljante branding concept "Tools for Togetherness". Het unieke succesverhaal van Extremis, dat op enkele jaren tijd een internationale reputatie verwierf als trendsetter op het gebied van buitenmeubilair, is sterk gelinkt aan de bevlogen persoonlijkheid en veelzijdige talenten van deze ontwerper-ondernemer, die het klappen van de zweep al heel jong leerde als zoon van een meubelmaker-schrijnwerker. Overtuigd maar ook altijd met de moed om vraagtekens te plaatsen. Sinds 2007 bestaat Dirk Wynants Design Works of (dw)2 autonoom en staat het naast Extremis ook open voor externe ontwerpopdrachten. Dirk Wynants sleepte sinds de start van Extremis in 1994 talloze internationale onderscheidingen in de wacht. Van de meest prestigieuze designerkenningen tot awards voor design management, algemeen management en export (waaronder Henry van de Velde Awards, Interior Innovation Award, (IMM Koln), Red Dot Award, International Excellence Design Award). As a son of a cabinet maker, Dirk Wynants (?°1964), was brought up with a nose for good design and a healthy dose of entrepreneurship. He studied interior and furniture design at Sint-Lucas School for Architecture in Ghent (Belgium) and was involved in the distribution of international design brands, until he established Extremis (1994), a label and brand for his own designs. Extremis' outdoor furniture designs quickly grew into an international standard of excellence. Not only the design collection itself has been applauded and awarded many times (with several Henry van de Velde Awards, Interior Innovation Award, (IMM Koln 2005), Red Dot Award 2005, International Excellence Design Award 2007, ao.), the expertise of Extremis in the field of design management, general management and export was praised just as well. In 2007 the creative unit of Extremis continued under the name Dirk Wynants Design Works = (dw)?, to enable the company to take on external design tasks. Dirk Wynants is still managing director and main designer of Extremis, but is also working closely together with other internationally renowned designers.

Wegner (1914 2007) is inseparable from his unrivalled chairs, which helped Danish design to achieve its international breakthrough. Every design fan has his or her favorite from among Wegner s approximately five hundred creations. Today, there is a hardly a glossy interior design magazine that does not include an illustration of the elegant China Chair (1943) or the Y Chair (1950), and even John F. Kennedy sat on his Round Chair, which is now simply called The Chair (1949). Trained as a furniture maker, Wegner usually made his prototypes himself by hand, using traditional joinery techniques such as tongue-and-groove or finger joints. In the process he pushed the limitations of wood, giving his designs an unmatched elegance. His sense of humor did not fall by the wayside, either, as evidenced by his splendid Peacock Chair (1947) or the masculine Ox Chair (1960), that latter of which is available with or without horns.

Les sélections de pièces tantôt subjectives jamais exhaustives se voudront représentatives du design en Belgique depuis les premiers pas de celui-ci jusqu'à ses représentants actuels les plus passionnants. C'est ici l'occasion de redécouvrir certains parmi les designers les plus talentueux comme Maarten Van Severen ou Christophe Gevers et de retracer brièvement leur parcours. Les pièces d'époques, de matériaux, de statuts et de natures différentes se succèdent telles que les accessoires en bois ou en métal conçus dans les années 1950 par Jules Wabbes, Jacques Dupuis et Léon Stynen, ou les premiers gadgets en matière plastique, ustensiles de cuisine développés par les films ACEC ou NOVA ou encore les tabourets de bar en vinyle aux motifs bicolores et ludiques de Willy Van Der Meeren. Ce tour d'horizon confirme par ailleurs, l'importance de la manufacture Boch Keramis ou de la firme Meurop et permet de se pencher, entre autres, sur les carrières de Huib Hoste, Xavier Lust ou Gustave Serrurier-Bovy. Comment raconter un design à vivre et à voir ? Comment parler au 21e siècle de l'histoire du design en Belgique? C'est avec ces interrogations que Belgisch design belge, l'exposition au Design Museum Brussels et ce livre qui l'accompagne, souhaitent initier une forme de réflexion. Après les livres Panorama et Designing the night, ce projet initie un cycle de propositions sous la forme de pop-ups qui se succèderont dans le temps. Les sélections de pièces tantôt subjectives jamais exhaustives se voudront représentatives du design en Belgique depuis les premiers pas de celui-ci jusqu'à ses représentants actuels les plus passionnants. C'est ici l'occasion de redécouvrir certains parmi les designers les plus talentueux comme Maarten Van Severen ou Christophe Gevers et de retracer brièvement leur parcours. Les pièces d'époques, de matériaux, de statuts et de natures différentes se succèdent telles que les accessoires en bois ou en métal conçus dans les années 1950 par Jules Wabbes, Jacques Dupuis et Léon Stynen, ou les premiers gadgets en matière plastique, ustensiles de cuisine développés par les films ACEC ou NOVA ou encore les tabourets de bar en vinyle aux motifs bicolores et ludiques de Willy Van Der Meeren. Ce tour d'horizon confirme par ailleurs, l'importance de la manufacture Boch Keramis ou de la firme Meurop et permet de se pencher, entre autres, sur les carrières de Huib Hoste, Xavier Lust ou Gustave Serrurier-Bovy.
