(TEA). HOUSSAYE, J G
MONOGRAPHIE DU THÉ. DESCRIPTION BOTANIQUE TORRÉFACTION COMPOSITION CHIMIQUE PROPRIÉTÉS HYGIÈNIQUE DE CETTE FEUILLE
Paris: Printed by H. Fournier et Cie for the author 1843. FIRST EDITION. 246 x 160 mm. 9 3/4 x 6 1/4". 2 p.l. 160 pp. 1 leaf ad.
Publisher's blue buckram covers with blind-stamped flourishes upper cover with gilt-stamped pagoda smooth spine with gilt lettering. With engraved vignette on title page and 17 engraved plates as called for showing tea plants tea plantations and the processing of leaves. Corners slightly bumped as expected with thin boards persistent light foxing first and last half dozen leaves more noticeably foxed but still an excellent copy quite clean and fresh internally in an exceptionally well-preserved binding that is extremely lustrous and shows virtually no wear.

Offered in an extraordinarily lustrous publisher's binding this attractively illustrated publication--part informational text part clever advertising material--provides a fascinating glimpse into the 19th century tea industry. Our author J. G. Houssaye ran a Parisian Chinese imports shop À La Porte Chinoise which specialized in tea. In the introduction to this work he writes that he had been involved with the tea trade for 20 years and he remained in business until at least 1855 when he lent his collection to the International Exposition writing a lengthy catalog to provide context about Chinese culture and history. His collection was sold at auction the following year suggesting he may have either died or left the trade. The present work which is illustrated with attractive wood-engravings depicting every part of the tea production process details all aspects of the trade including imports to Europe and the United States the botanical and chemical properties of the tea plant different varieties and preparations of tea and Chinese tea harvesting processing and culture. Houssaye tells us in the introduction that he has "done the most conscientious research on the nature of this plant" and that he has read "all the ancient and modern authors who have written about tea." The depth of his research is confirmed by the bibliography at the end of the work which comprises publications on tea dating from 1590 to 1841. However it is evident that Houssaye's production of this work was not merely scholarly: the binding and title are decorated with his logo and an advertisement for À La Porte Chinoise appears at the end. His practical goals are further attested to by the pasted-in corrections for his address that appear on the title and advertisement: he had moved his premises from rue de la Bourse to rue Vivienne during the production of the book and naturally wanted readers to be able to find his new location. Printed by H. Fournier et Cie for the author unknown

(THE ADVENTURES OF OZZIE AND HARRIET). NELSON, David (1936-2011), NELSON, Harriet (1909-94), NELSON, Ozzie (1906-75) and NELSON,
Signatures / Unsigned Photograph
This husband and wife acting couple created created "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" as a radio comedy in the 1940s and by the time it transitioned to television 1952-66 on ABC it included their two sons as well. Collection of all four signatures on three irrgularly-trimmed roughly rectangular slips accompanied by a modern glossy 8" X 10" black-and-white photograph an "Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" still scene showing four smiling Nelsons descending a ship's gangplank. On a 2 3/4" X 4" slip with red scalloped edges top and bottom and a floral bouquet at upper left Harriet boldly pens "Best wishes / Harriet Nelson" in blue ink and below her signature Ozzie signs in black ballpoint. On a 3" X 2½" slip older brother Dave pens "To Donald Burnell / Best wishes / Dave Nelson" large and bold in black fineline. On a 3½" X 2" slip younger brother Ricky who went on to become a pop singing sensation pens "To Donald Burnell / Best Wishes / Rick Nelson" in black fineline." Very good. All three slips bear small border tape stains slightly touching upon several letters; all three are undated but are circa 1960. Unusual gathering of all four Nelsons. unknown

(The American Film Institute) Hanson, Patricia King, ed
The American Film Institute Catalog of Motion Pictures Produced in the United States: Feature Films 1911-1920 complete 2-volume set
Berkeley CA: University of California Press. Near Fine. c.1988. First Edition. Hardcover. no dust jackets as issued both volumes virtually as-new with only the slightest traces of handling wear internally completely unmarked. Compilation of credit data on 5189 feature films defined as films four reels or more in length from the decade that saw the birth of the feature film. The first volume of this massive ongoing indispensible reference work to be completed after the resuscitation of the Catalog project in the mid-80s it in many ways a map or a tour guide through a vanished land since between 80% and 90% of the films documented herein no longer exist in any form. The cataloguers thus denied direct access in most cases to the objects being catalogued the films nonetheless did a prodigious job of marshaling the extant evidence from contemporaneous printed materials such as trade reviews and articles catalogs and advertisements issued by the early film companies and extant archival records. This was especially daunting since at the beginning of this decade the entire concept of "credits" for films was still in the future and even by the end of the decade the on-screen credits for most films represented only a fraction of the people who created them. The individual film entries include whatever credits could be uncovered; a plot synopsis; bibliographic citations and "notes" the latter serving as a catch-all for random pieces of background information on the film. The second volume includes indexes by: personal name; corporate name; subject; genre; geographic location; literary and dramatic sources. NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping or for Priority Mail service to U.S. addresses no charge for Media Mail as with all our offerings; if this concerns you please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order. .
