Chase, Rear Admiral Jehu V (1869-1937). Career naval officer best remembered for his leadership of the USS Minnesota during Worl
MAGAZINE PORTRAIT INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY U.S. NAVAL OFFICER REAR ADMIRAL JEHU V. CHASE.
Circa 1930. 1930. Good. - A black-and-white approximately 3 inch high by 2-1/4 wide portrait has been clipped from a magazine and mounted on a piece of cream-colored paper and then on a gray card 6 inches high by 3-3/4 inches wide. Inscribed and signed on the first mount below the portrait: "To Seymour Halpern / with kindest regards / J. V. Chase / Admiral US Navy". There is a piece out of the lower right edge of the gray card & its bottom left corner is chipped. There is a very small crease to the left margin of the cream mount. Good.
This head-and-shoulders portrait of Chase is inscribed to future Congressman Seymour Halpern then a young autograph collector.
Rear Admiral Jehu V. Chase 1869-1937 was a career officer in the U.S. Navy. As commander of the USS Minnesota when she was mined in World War I he was awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal for his seamanship and leadership in bringing his ship safely to port without loss of life. From September 1930 to September 1931 he was Commander in Chief of the United States Fleet and from April 1932 until his retirement in February 1933.he was Chairman of the General Board.
The Queens New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern 1913-1997 started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law including measures on schools housing civil rights nutrition and mental health. A Liberal he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits including painting and collecting autographs he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation. Circa [1930]. unknown

UNION AND FREEDOM WITHOUT COMPROMISE. SPEECH OF MR. CHASE OF OHIO ON MR. CLAY'S COMPROMISE RESOLUTION. In Senate March 26 1850.

Washington D.C.: Printed and for sale by Buell & Blanchard 1850. 1850. Very good. - Octavo 9-3/4 inches high by 6-1/4 inches wide. Softcover bound in printed self wraps. An uncut 19 inch high by 23-3/4 inch wide folded folio sheet containing 16 pages including the covers. The top edge is slightly creased and there are a couple of minor spots of foxing. A near fine uncut pamphlet.

An anti-slavery champion while serving in the Senate Salmon Portland Chase 1808-1873 was a U.S. Senator from Ohio from 1849 to 1855 and served as Ohio's Governor from 1856 to 1860. He was appointed as secretary of the Treasury by Abraham Lincoln serving from 1861 to 1864 before being appointed to and serving as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 1864 to 1873. He was elected to the Senate on the Free Soil Party ticket to bring pressure on Northern Democrats to force them to oppose the extension of slavery. An anti-slavery champion he argued against the Compromise of 1850 and the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. Consisting of 5 separated bills passed by Congress in order to temporarily diffuse tensions between the slave and free states the Compromise of 1850 was designed by Whig senator Henry Clay with Democratic senator Stephen A. Douglas to outline how to handle slavery in the territories acquired from the Mexican-American War determining which would be free or slave states and strengthening the fugitive slave laws.
Washington, D.C.: Printed and for sale by Buell & Blanchard, 1850. paperback

Chasing Tales The Lost Stories of Charles Lee Edited By Simon Parker and with Loosely laid in Notte Signed By Simon Parker to Po
Chasing Tales The Lost Stories of Charles Lee Edited By Simon Parker
Cornwall UK: GISS 'ON BOOKS 2002. This book has the added attraction of having a loosely laid in folded note which has been signed and inscribed by Simon Parker to the famous Poldark novelist Winston Graham. The note looks to be of the same paper used for the books pages so it has probably been signed by Simon Parker at the publishers. Both writers have strong connections with Cornwall. Book is in excellent condition and is possibly unread. Scarce having been signed. A lovely copy. Signed by Author. First Edition. Fine/Fine. FIRST EDITION. GISS 'ON BOOKS unknown

CHASLES, MICHEL - ONE OF THE GREATEST FORGERIES IN THE HISTORY OF SCIECE
Réponse à la communication de M. Faugères.
Paris Gauthier-Villars 1867. 4to. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences" Tome 65 No 10. Pp. 373- 428. Entire issue offered. Chasles' paper pp. 375-385.

"Chasles was a collector of autographs and manuscripts and this interest allied with his credulity to cause him serious embarrassment. From 1861 to 1869 he was the victim of one of the most clever and prolific of literary forgers Denis Vrain-Lucas. Chasles bought thousands of manuscripts including a correspondence between Isaac Newton Blaise Pascal and Robert Boyle which established that Pascal had anticipated Newton in the discovery of the law of universal gravitation. Chasles presented these letters to the Academy in 1867 and took an active part in the furor that ensued 1867-1869 vigorously defending the genuineness of the letters. In 1869 Vrain-Lucas was brought to trial and convicted. Chasles was forced to testify and had to admit to having purchased letters allegedly written by Galileo Cleopatra and Lazarus all in French."
