‎Beijing: Libroservo de ina Esperanto-Ligo 1972. A rare example of one of the sales catalogues issued by the China Esperanto League for overseas Esperantists wishing to order Mao's works. For catalogues issued in the 1960s and 1970s WorldCat records a total of only nine copies. Shortly after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 the All-China Esperanto Association later renamed the "China Esperanto League" was formed in Shanghai and in the 1950s the League hosted speakers from around the world. While foreign contacts ceased during the Cultural Revolution the League used its network to promote Maoism to Esperanto movements abroad. The present catalogue offers for sale at very cheap prices volumes of Mao's Selected Works as well as pamphlets of his speeches and major essays. At the rear an order form is provided for customers to complete and return to Beijing by post. Though not marked as such the present copy is from the library of Paul Pickowicz b. 1945 a notable scholar of modern Chinese culture and society. In 1971 Pickowicz was one of 15 American scholars invited to visit the mainland the delegation being the first group of American academics to set foot in Mao's China. Duodecimo pp. 18. Four scarce views of a Shanghai cultural landmark A collection of scarce photographs of Shanghai's renowned Willow Pattern Tea House in the late Qing and early republican eras. These images capture the bustling atmosphere of sociability consumption and conversation in this quintessential Chinese urban institution and show how tea houses acted as barometers of socio-cultural change during China's transition to modernity. The Willow Pattern Tea House Chinese: Huxinting or Woo Sing Ding thought to be one of the oldest tea houses in China is a Shanghai landmark named in English after its similarity to the design of blue and white willow pattern crockery. Built in the 16th century near the Yu Gardens as a scholar's retreat it was restored and converted into a tea house in 1855 during the Xianfeng dynasty. Among its most distinctive features is the zigzagging Nine Curve Bridge used by visitors to cross the surrounding lake. A draw for many dignitaries Willow Pattern was visited by Queen Elizabeth II during her 1986 state visit and by Bill Clinton in 1998. In addition to the early 1930s panorama this collection includes four stereograph cards from leading publishers: a. "Where Shanghai's Wealthy Natives Pass the Time - Chinese Tea House China". Underwood & Underwood. Albumen print photograph taken c.1900 by the traveller James Ricalton 1844-1929. We have traced copies in the Library of Congress Museum of New Zealand and UC Riverside. b. "A Pretty Little Tea House Known as the Willow Pattern Shanghai China" two copies. H. C. White Co. Silver gelatine print photograph taken in 1901 card issued in 1903 or later. Series number 22 negative 3729. No institutional copies traced. c. "Where a Famous Oriental Love Story was Born". Keystone View Company. Silver gelatine print series number 981 negative 23979 issued as part of Keystone's 1200-card "Tour of the World" series 1935/6. We have traced examples at William & Mary and Marist and complete sets appear occasionally in commerce. The earliest photograph "Where Shanghai's Wealthy Natives Pass the Time" shows men of a range of ages in the tea house's refined surroundings all with prescribed queues and mostly looking out the window likely toward some form of entertainment or performance typically laid on for patrons at the best tea venues. "A Pretty Little Tea House" also from the late Qing dynasty shows the exterior as seen looking over the Nine Curve Bridge; once again the tea house is an exclusively male space with the addition of two foreign visitors taking a picture against the picturesque background. Keystone's later stereograph and the contemporary panorama taken from a similar angle together capture the changes wrought by the end of dynastic rule and the advent of a more distinctive cultural modernity in urban areas. New fashion styles advertising boards placed on surrounding structures and a higher footfall of visitors still however predominantly male evoke the bustle of Shanghai in the roaring twenties and early thirties. Four captioned stereograph cards 88 x 178 mm each with rounded corners and two mounted 80 x 78 mm albumen or silver gelatine photographs. Together with silver gelatine panorama 100 x 248 mm with matt finish and small margin. A well-preserved collection two stereographs slightly yellowed one of these with conspicuous brushstrokes silver mirroring at foot of panorama. hardcover‎

‎<p>Silver Spring Maryland November 20 1991. 1991. Very good. - Over 180 words typed on his 8-5/8 inch high by 7 inch wide "Commander Reserve Naval Construction Force / First Reserve Naval Construction Brigade" stationery. Rear Admiral Chiogioji responds to Rear Admiral Lewis Combs' letter congratulating him on his assuming command of the Brigade and also on the fund raising efforts towards the Memorial Fund. "Mel" Chiogioji replies that "I can assure you that I have taken on a very large challenge in assuming command of the Reserve Naval Construction Force from Paul Rosser." He goes on to explain that his main emphasis is "to fully integrate the active and reserve Seabees into a single unified organization." He thanks Admiral Combs for his support of the SMSA and hopes to be able to see him in Red Hook. Signed "Mel". Stapled to a retained copy of Rear Admiral Combs' letter with additional staple holes and a paper clip stain at top left. "Adm Cihiogioji" is boldly written in pencil at top right in another hand.</p><p>Rear Admiral Melvin H. "Mel" Chiogioji was born in Hiroshima Japan in 1939 and immigrated to the United States. He served 32 years in the Navy and Naval reserve in the Civil Engineer Corps including 6 years as a Rear Admiral. He took active command of the Second Naval Construction Brigade U.S. Atlantic Fleet being the first Reserve Admiral to be appointed to an active Naval Command. Mel was responsible for the crisis response forces during Operation Desert Storm in the Middle East and also of operations in the Atlantic and Mediterranean theaters.</p> (Silver Spring, Maryland), November 20, 1991.‎

The ultimate encyclopedic reference for the historian or any other scholar who wishes to discover the "state of knowledge" in his or her specialty before 1910. When we found that precious edition at a yard sale in Minnesota more than 40 years ago when we were a lowly graduate student we almost wet our pants. Of course we bought it even though it cost us nearly two months' rent and we've been hauling it around with us ever since. Now it is time to pass it on to someone who will love as much as we the Royal we did! A Collectors' item. The interiors of all volumes are about as good as it gets. Original burgundy flexible leather covers are very good. They were very good when I bought them more than forty years ago and they have received several applications of preservative oils since then. Though a bit fragile they will last many more decades with care and careful handling. The 29 volumes sit horizontally in a vertical case of mahogany we think which has but minor easily remedied scuffing. The case is included obviously. Also included a "reader's guide" which is bound in tan buckram. This is obviously a very heavy product that is very expensive to ship and so shipping is negotiable depending on buyer's location and desire for care security etc. The product is undoubtedly too large to entrust to the US Postal Service.
