1849 – Letter regarding the private purchase of public lands in Michigan
Envelope or Cover. Very good. This one-page stampless folded letter was sent by C. B. Young of Detroit to the Michigan Auditor General in Lansing. It is datelined “Nov 25 1849.†It bears a circular Detroit postmark “Paid†handstamp and “5†rate mark all in red.<br /> <br /> The letter forwarded $3.00 to purchase public land in Ionia County from the sale of 1847. From the time of the Land Ordinance of 1785 and the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 Michigan was a public land territory and state. This meant that the federal government was responsible for disposing of all the state’s land except for a small number of private claims. Various American Indian groups could also claim sovereignty of the land as well.<br /> <br /> Although privatization was a success it was also deeply flawed. The state government took a special interest in the process for a number of reasons including quieting Native American unrest over claims surveying and platting state-claimed land reviewing the federal and state administrators responsible for processing the claims analyzing the privatization policies controlling speculation and determining privatization’s effect on settlements. <br /> <br /> This letter is likely related to the general privatization process and not the resale of military bounty land or land sold to recoup delinquent taxes.<br /> For more information see Mitchell’s “Towards a History of Privatizing Public Lands in Michigan 1785 1860†in Fall 2008 edition of the Michigan Academician. unknown

The two Times Special Reports dated 13 November 1854 The Attack on Balaclava and 23 November 1854 The Battle of Inkermann provide detailed contemporary accounts of two of the most significant engagements of the Crimean War. The Balaclava issue contains the earliest extended reports of the battle of 25 October including the now-legendary Charge of the Light Brigade official despatches from Lord Raglan and narrative descriptions that shaped public perception of both the disaster and the heroism involved. The Inkermann issue presents Lord Raglan's despatches and extensive coverage of the desperate fighting on 5 November 1854 when outnumbered British and French forces repelled a much larger Russian army. Together these issues stand as immediate first-hand printed records of events that soon became iconic in British military history. These copies are original 1854 issues of The Times not later reprints or bound compilations. Issued as separate folio supplements printed on rag-based paper and headed with the distinctive Times masthead and royal crest they were sold individually to provide the public with full stand-alone accounts of major battles. Survival of such ephemeral publications is uncommon making these examples both scarce and historically significant. Their value lies not only in their rarity but also in their role as primary sources that convey how the war was reported understood and remembered at the time. Two issues each four pages in length. Some minor marginal tears probably inevitable with newspapers of this sort. Preserved in a modern card cover prepared for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery. Size: 29 x 44.5 cms. London England: Printed for the Company of Stationers 1777. Twenty-two issues of this yearly British almanac bound in one volume; consecutive and inclusive from the 1777 issue to 1797. These are printed in red & black have the tax stamps on the margins of the title pages and are of 32 pages' length with exceptions or notes as below: 1782: On page 31 the section "VI Rebus by Mr. R. Richardson of Frosterly" has been solved with the manuscript letters & names of clues neatly written at the margins. 1786: pgs 1-2 15-32; However another issue is bound after this incomplete issue that is entire in 48 pages. These almanacs are noted on the title pages as printed for the Company of Stationers; and this "extra" issue is noted on the title page as "Printed for T. Carnan in St. Paul's Church Yard; who after an expensive Suit in Law and Equity by the unanimous Opinion of the Judges of the Court of Common Please dispossessed the Stationers' Company of their pretended exclusive Privilege of Printing Almanacks which they had usurped for two Centuries; a convincing Proof that no unjust Monopoly will ever stand the Test of an English Court of Justice." 1788: pgs 1-2 15-32 only. 1793 Misbound pages out of order and complete 32 pages. 1795: A name of "Old Batholomew" has been added in ms. at the 4th Sept. in the monthly almanac pages section. 1797 pgs 1-16 only. A leading theorist of the Social Democratic Party of Germany SPD and the Second International Kautsky advocated orthodox Marxism which emphasized the scientific materialist and determinist character of Karl Marx's work. This interpretation dominated European Marxism for two decades from the death of Friedrich Engels in 1895 to the outbreak of World War I in 1914."<br> Eduard Bernstein 1850-1932 was a "German social democratic Marxist theorist and politician. A member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany SPD Bernstein had held close association to Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels but he began to identify what he believed to be errors in Marxist thinking and began to criticize views held by Marxism when he investigated and challenged the Marxist materialist theory of history. He rejected significant parts of Marxist theory that were based upon Hegelian metaphysics and rejected the Hegelian perspective of an immanent economic necessity to socialism.<br> Bernstein was born in Berlin-Kreuzberg to Jewish parents who were active in the Reform Temple on the Johannistrasse whose services were performed on Sunday" Wikipedia. <br> Liebman Hersh 1882-1955 aka Pesach Liebmann Hersch "was a professor of demography and statistics at the University of Geneva and an intellectual of the Jewish Labor Bund whose pioneering work on Jewish migration achieved international recognition in the period after the First World War.<br> Liebmann Hersch was born in the small Lithuanian town of Pamušis.Liebmann's father was a maskil and a journalist who published articles in various Hebrew journals including Ha-Maggid and Ha-Melitz.<br> Liebmann Hersch studied mathematics at the University of Warsaw. Bradford opened as the first coeducational institution in Massachusetts but due to overwhelming interest from parents of girls with no other option for education Bradford soon transitioned to become the first all-female academy in Massachusetts and among the first in the United States in 1836. Only three examples of these early Incorporation Acts could not be found among Institutional Collections according to OCLC Worldcat. <br/><br/>Women's colleges proliferated in the mid- to late- 19th century to fill the void created by their exclusion from most institutions of higher education. The prevailing notion that women were too delicate for a rigorous academic education was openly challenged when Elizabeth Cady Stanton spoke at the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848 "Man's intellectual superiority cannot be a question until woman has had a fair trial.When we shall have had our colleges our professions our trades for a century a comparison then may be justly instituted." Front board with dulled gilt label: "The United Parishes Of S. Margaret Lothbury S. Christopher Le Stocks S. Bartholomew By The Exchange." Spine with 5 raised bands and dulled gilt title: "Common Prayer". All page edges gilt now a little dulled Original yellow endpapers soiled. Light spotting to free-endpapers. Title-page in red & black. Clear English text throughout in double columns. Each page within a red-lined border. Pages refering to Morning and Evening Prayer soiled due to previous regular use. With 4 black silk marker ribbons. A very good 19th century parayer book with an interesting provenance. "St Christopher le Stocks was a parish church on the south side of Threadneedle Street in the Broad Street Ward of the City of London. Of Medieval origin it was rebuilt following the Great Fire of London in 1666 but demolished to make way for an extension of the neighbouring Bank of England. The parish was united with that of St Margaret Lothbury in 1781 and the church pulled down the next year. In 1839 Saint Bartholomew by the Exchange was added when its church was also demolished.
