This study analyzes a nearly forgotten Russian intellectual, Konstantin Nikolaevich Leontiev's (1831-1891) ideas on democracy, liberalism, nationalism, and the East-West dichotomy in the second half of the 19th century. Leontiev spent nearly ten years in the Balkan provinces of the Ottoman Empire as a diplomat, travelled and made observations in the conflict-ridden Ottoman Macedonia. Leontiev's political opinions, Byzantinism as he called it, took shape during his diplomatic service. At the basis of Leontiev's approach to politics, history, and religion laid a theory of aestheticism. He searched for beauty and poetic value in everything from politics to daily life. In line with his historical theory explaining the rise and fall of civilizations, Leontiev underlined that Russia should hold fast to the Byzantine heritage in order to avoid cultural decline. He idealized an anti-nationalist but strictly theocratic political regime. Leontiev's conservative utopia (or dystopia) presents a sui generis assessment of the theoretical deficiencies of such concepts like nationalism, democracy, and liberalism.

The Ottoman naval defeat at Lepanto in 1571 or for some other people the failure of the second siege of Vienna in 1683 was the beginning of the decline. The Empire was effectively ended by the World War I (WWI) and those concerned were not able to preserve the city in the appropriate form it deserved. I purchased the album containing these pictures a decade ago. It is understood that an mysterious French Officer who came to Constantinople during the occupation of the city by Allied Forces at the end of WWI in 1918. He took photographs of buildings and people capturing interesting scenes from social life documented the need for extensive restoration of the old city.

There are over five thousand weights from the Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Collection at the Pera Museum, ranging in date from the Ancient Near Eastern Civilizations, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods. This large collection will be published in a number of separate volumes as part of the series of Corpus Ponderum Antiquorum et Islamicorum. The first volume covers 635 Greek and Roman weights. The Roman truncated spheres are included in the second volume, which covers the Late Roman and Byzantine weights. The majority of the weights in the Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation Collection were acquired over a period of thirty years by Inan Kirac through various local and international auctions and collectors. The present second volume, completed in a three-year-long study, covers the Late Roman and Byzantine weights in the same collection. The catalogue covers 742 weights, 38 of which are of glass. The majority of the weights were acquired between 2005 and 2008. In the catalogue 201 weights are grouped under the title of "Commercial Weights" while 456 weights are grouped under the title of "Coin Weights". Furthermore, the catalogue covers circular weights with concentric circles and bowl-shaped weights both of which date to the Middle Byzantine Period.

Kutlug Ataman's video and film works document the lives of marginalized individuals who explicitly give voice to their own obsessions, their relations with micro and macro power structures and verbalize straightforwardly their subliminal issues or sexuality. "I am not interested in exposing these people and turning them into a show," says Ataman, about his preference of these characters, "I only work with people that I see myself in." Ataman chooses narratives that dangle between reality and fiction in his work, which chiefly retains the documentary style. He questions how individuals manifest their identities through storytelling and how narratives are used to re-fabricate another 'self'. While offering an alternative to the categorizing structure of identity politics by putting the individual at the core, Ataman also interconnects significant issues of contemporary art today, such as historiography, social/individual identity, memory, plurality, myth, game and power. Individuals at the centre of Ataman's works narrate not over an academic, institutionalized and fixed representation of history, but over flexible performances such as personal myth-making, masking and shielding. While verbalizing personal stories, individuals expose the ease of verbal expression and persuasiveness of language. Ataman also shapes the screen layout of his video works into installation / sculpture like forms.

A very comprehensive illustrated study on Turkish photographer, Hamza Rüstem, (1872-1971), who was born in Crete. Beside him, Rahmizâde Bahaeddin Bey (Bahaettin Rahmi Bediz, Rahmi Bediz after the 1934 - Law on Family Names in Turkey) was a Cretan Turk who is generally agreed by historians to be the first Turkish photographer by profession. He was a first photographer of archaeologist Evans' Knossos excavations. He started his career in Hanya, Crete in 1895, and went on to open photography studios in Izmir in 1910, in Istanbul in 1915 where he acquired his fame, and in Ankara after 1935 where, aside from his private business, he worked as the Chief of Photography Department in Turkish Historical Society. The thousands of photographs (especially portraits) he took during his career (Crete, Izmir, Istanbul, Ankara) have immense historical value. Before Hamza Rüstem was a photographer was trading some goods near English camp in Crete. Bediz discovered him in Crete as a trader, and he hand his photograph studio to Hamza Rüstem on in Constantinople, Istanbul after Second Constitution, 1909. Bediz was a first Muslim photographer who opened a studio in Ottoman geography according photographic literature. This book includes many postcards which photographed by Bediz, biography of Hamza Rüstem and sons and corporate history of his studio.

The unity of the old urban fabric in the city of Izmir, having thousands of historical and cultural heritage, is rapidly impaired while the "city identity" is changing. Cultural assets such as forts, bastions, walls, public baths, tombs and inscriptions, bridges, aqueducts, houses, mansions, mosques, fountains and cemeteries are all, our shared memories which are worth-appreciating. Basmane and its neighborhood are famous for having intense cultural assets where historical, architectural and archaeological values are treated with great care. The number of the abondoned, moved, burned and ruined characteristics of the city, caused by the misuse or other countable reasons, are increasing day by day. Due to the unauthorized interventions by the non-experts, they are also cut off from the city's historical identity. In my book 'A Souvenir from Izmir' I intended to draw attention of the relevant institutions and organizations to the importance of the cultural assets in this region, to call the authorities for taking the necessary action for the unregistered artifacts and to help researchers in easily finding their places by giving the exact addresses of these artifacts. Because I am conscious of the fact that protecting and preserving the cultural assets is the most meaningful gift that could be left to the next generations. Hereby, I would like to thank Ayse Üngör, director of Ahmet Piristina city archive and Museum of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, and his colleagues Gülsüm Berdan Eren, Buket Ocak, Alev Turhan, Ekrem Tükenmez, Servet Kuru for their efforts in editing, translating and publicating my book; and Asst.
