Nuremberg 1497. Counterproof engraving and drypoint trimmed within platemark: 7 3/8 x 4 3/4 inches. A reversed late copy of one of Durer's secular "moralities." This is a mirror image of the original engraving on laid paper by the great Northern Renaissance artist Albrecht Durer. The meaning of the print has been the subject of scholarly dispute as the title given is not Durer's. A scholar or doctor is napping by a warm stove. A demon is blowing evil notions into his mind and a nude woman presumably Venus stands beside him a figment of his dream. Cupid on little stilts representing the precarious nature of love toys with a sphere at the bottom of the scene the sphere possiby representing the world. The whole scene suggests a moralistic and rather Germanic warning about self-indulgence: too much comfort and idleness leave one open to the Devil's ploys: fantasies of love and lust. unknown

Towards the end of his life Durer began th publication of the theoretical writings on which he had worked over a space of many years and to which he attached great importance. 'Instruction in Measurement' appeared in 1525 and 'The Fortification of Towns' in 1527. At the time of his death in April 1528 Durer had finished preparing for publication the first of the 'Four Books on Human Proportion'. The manuscripts for the remaining books were assembled by his friends and the work appeared in October 1528. It proved by far the most popular of his books. Six editions appeared in the first nine years and there were sixteen editions in all the last being in 1662. Apart from the celebrated "aesthetic discourse" at the end of Book Three very little of this work has been reproduced subsequently. In particular the woodcuts are strangely little known. The value for the Durer scholar in having an inexpensive facsimile of the 'Four Books' is self evident. Also for the more general student of art history this work should be of considerable interest. Besides the obvious attraction of the 99 full-page figure woodcuts and the impressiveness of Durer's painstaking approach it is fascinating to compare this work with comparable Italian works on aesthetic theory. This edition is an exact facsimile of the first German edition a Latin translation appeared in the same year and was prepared from a copy in excellent preservation. New editorial matter in German consists of a table of contents and a short bibliographical introduction. Book in very good condition with little evidence of use. One of 140 copies folio size 34 leaves unnumbered with original prospectus folded in original hand-addresed mailing envelope. The thirty-second limited edition from The Allen Press and the first printed on their 1846 Columbian handpress. Terence circa 195 - 159 B.C. was and has remained a popular playwright "The Brothers" considered to be one of his greatest plays being "not only a delightful and clever comedy but also a fine study of human nature. Proof of the timelessness of Terence's genius lies in the fact that over 400 manuscripts of his plays survive today and many of his plots have been purloined by successive generations of playwrights." This is the first edition of "The Brothers" illustrated by Durer. "Although there were about forty Terence editions previous to 1500 humanist scholars strongly objected to illustrations for the classics. So it was not until 1493 that the first was issued: 150 woodcuts in the edition printed by Johann Treschel at Lyon France. It is one of the most beautiful illustrated books of the fifteenth-century; but its editor Johann Badius tried to soften the innovation by declaring that the pictures were added to assist the illiterate." The coincidence which made the present edition possible is that "Johann Amerbach of Basel unaware that the Treschel edition was underway began a similar edition by commissioning the young genius Albrecht Durer at age 20 to design 150 illustrative woodcuts one for every scene of the drama. However when the drawings were completed but only a few blocks cut the Lyon edition appeared and the Basel project abandoned." Durer's work survived and is preserved at the Kunstmuseum Basel where Lewis and Dorothy Allen first studied the mostly ink drawings of white-grounded wood blocks work in 1965. The director of the museum generously provided them with permission to reproduce the drawings and provided high resolution photos. c.1596 - 1600. . A woodblock print on paper with the watermark of a two-headed eagle with a five-petal flower estimated 1596 - 1600. Size of image is 209mm x 299mm. The sheet measures 230m x 320mm. A little wear to upper corners short tear at center of upper margin not touching image residual paper tape in three spots on the verso of the upper edge light horizontal crease at center but quite a nice copy overall. Good margins well outside the borderline on all four sides. Originally executed in 1504/05 for The Life of The Virgin published in the 1511 edition. Bartsch 92. Meder 204.
