Die ältere Ware wurde noch kaltgebrannt, im 5. und 6. Jahrhundert produzierte man aber bereits unter Verwendung lokaler Rohmaterialien eine Art von Porzellan. … Während der Song- und Yuan-Dynastie produzierte man Porzellan in Jingdezhen und anderen südchinesischen Brennstätten teilweise unter alleiniger Verwendung von Petuntse bei Temperaturen von ca. 1250 Grad. Im frühen achtzehnten Jahrhundert mischte man diese aber wieder zunehmend zu gleichen Teilen mit Kaolin und brannte bei 1350 Grad. So entstand ein sehr dauerhaftes Porzellan von strahlendem Weiß. In den eiförmig gebauten Brennöfen des Südens herrschten große Temperaturunterschiede, die durch Variierung des Kaolinanteils der Werkmasse ausgeglichen werden mussten. ... (wiki)

In 1869 Waddell 1839–1901 landed at Newchwang now Yingkou where he established a mission station that included a church school and dispensary. His daughter was Helen Waddell poet scholar and theological novelist. <br> <br>Recent signature of A. Allan Shearer Wellington. Scarce reprint of the second part of Morrison's Dictionary first published between 1815 and 1823 with a notable provenance. The 1865 reprint was issued as a single volume combining the second part of the dictionary with an index of characters arranged according to the Kangxi radicals. <br> <br>"The Second Part of Morrison's Dictionary has been generally commended by experienced Sinologues as the most perfect and useful of the whole. Title page Dedication 6pp Preface Brief Explanation of an Alphabetical Language 480pp. <br> <br>Part I in three volumes uniformly bound in later half black library cloth red papered boards 29.5 x 24cm uniform age-toning with occasional foxing small marginal splits and tears some leaves neatly repaired most archivally the paper in each volume is as often extremely friable and delicate title pages to Volume I and III clipped at the top right presumably to remove previous ownership final leaf in Vol III chipped with loss of text to the top corner and loss to the corner of another pp 529-30 occasional pencilled and neatly inked marginalia and inked Chinese characters to the head of a few leaves boards rubbed and scratched but overall in sound condition. <br> <br>Part III later pebbled-cloth boards re-backed with paper spine labels yellow endpapers remnants of an inked note to the verso of the front free endpaper 30.5 x 25cm head of the title page archivally strengthened and small marginal tears to the dedication leaf archivally repaired some pencilled marginalia text age-toned the boards water stained and discoloured the front endpapers and first few leaves with marginal staining and scattered marginal discolouration throughout scant foxing but overall the text in good unmarked condition with generous margins. <br> <br>Provenance: with the inked signature "A.W. Hummell Fenchow Shansi China" to the three front pastedowns of Part I. Arthur W. Hummel 1884–1975 Christian missionary to China head of the Asian Division of the Library of Congress noted sinologist and editor of "Eminent Chinese of the Ch'ing Period" a biographical dictionary. He was the first president of the Association for Asian Studies in 1948. Hummel's son Arthur W. Hummel Jr. was a career diplomat and U.S. Ambassador to China. A landmark work now extremely scarce on the market with a notable provenance see note above. <br> <br>"The first Chinese-English dictionary containing more than 40000 characters arranged in both Kangxi classifiers part I volumes 1 -3 and by pronunciation part 2 volumes 1 - 2; part 3 is from English to Chinese. Two fonts of Chinese characters were used a large one for main entries and a smaller one for the examples. According to Heijdra Morrison had Chinese type cut directly onto type blanks. That is the type was not cast from matrices and therefore was not reproducible." - Löwendahl Volume II. Hua Hin. 2008. <br> <br>The Reverend Dr Robert Morrison 1782-1834 was the pioneer of Protestant Missionary work in China. Arriving in China in 1807 he was met with much opposition and many difficulties. There was "opposition of Chinese to his residence the prohibition to Chinese to teach the language to foreigners the hostility of the Roman Catholic priests in Macao and the strict regulations of the East India Company. However in spite of all difficulties he was able to print the entire Scriptures in Chinese in 1824.He completed a Chinese grammar in 1812 a dictionary of Chinese in 1814 and another of the Canton dialect.
