Early 20th-century half-brown morocco over marbled boards by Bonneau St. Honere binder’s embossed stamp at corner of ffep. t.e.g. very minor bumping & wear to couple corners light offset toning to endpapers still a VG copy. Second edition of McLeod’s memoir recounting the voyages in 1816 of the HMS Alceste under the command of Captain Murray Maxwell and one of the first British vessels to visit Okinawa Lewchew. Their mission to deliver Lord Amherst to the court of the Chinese Emperor at Peking in an attempt to open trade with China succeeded in 1816 after they rounded the Cape of Good Hope and crossed the Pacific and continued to explore off the coast of Korea. They were repeatedly warned by the Koreans to avoid the coast even drawing cutting motions across their necks and one Korean dignitary they had befriended at sea intimated he would be beheaded within four days for having met them at the shoreline. The Alceste spent several months in Okinawa where McLeod studied their surgical and medical practices before returning to retrieve Lord Amherst after his delegation failed. On the return voyage they were shipwrecked attacked by Malay pirates and the rescue ship caught fire. They finally returned home in 1817 after 20 months travel. ‎Lang Shih-ning (Giuseppe Castiglione 1688-1766) was a native of Milan, Iyaly. At the age of 19, he entered the Society of Jesus as a novitiate. Trained as a painter and architect, he was sent to China at the age of 27 to serve as a missionary. He arrived in Peking during the 54th year of the K'ang Hsi reign in 17125, and made the Church of St. Joseph his living quarters. He was summoned to the Palace to serve as a Court painter in the Imperial Academy. As Lang Shih-ning's works were collected by the Imperial Palace, the number of paintings attributed to him now extant outside the Palace collection are very few.‎

Special reference is made to the Peking administration the Canton trade and the early treaty system the Taiping Nien and other rebellions and the dynasty's survival in uneasy cooperation with the British French American and other invaders. Volume 11 surveys the persistence and deterioration of the old order in China during the late nineteenth century and the profound stirring during that period which led to China's great twentieth-century revolution. It focuses on commercial and technological growth foreign relations the stimulation of Chinese intellectual life by the outside world and military triumphs and disasters. (Usures et défauts dusage).‎

‎Joli album contenant 12 gouaches sur papier représentant divers métiers et scènes de vie de la Chine vers la fin de la période des Qing, dynastie impériale qui a régné sur le pays durant près de trois siècles, de 1644 à 1912. Ce type d'album, produits à Canton, étaient destinés à l'export vers l'Europe ou ils étaient particulièrement appréciés. Scènes représentées : serveur, masseur, porteur d'eau, potier, marchand de poissons, musiciens aveugles, horticulteur, personnages à dos de buffles, voyageurs prenant leur repas, portraitiste Ensemble parfaitement conservé dans sa condition dorigine. 1 vol 4to ( 250 x 205 mm ) of: [14] ff including 2 blanks and 12 ink and gouache paintings on paper (rare soiling or stains, very fresh colors). Vintage accordion-fold boards, covered with blue, red and white japon dominoté paper with geometric and floral motifs. (Wear and tear). Pretty album containing 12 gouaches on paper depicting various trades and scenes of life in China towards the end of the Qing period, the imperial dynasty that ruled the country for nearly three centuries, from 1644 to 1912. This type of album, produced in Canton, was destined for export to Europe, where it was particularly appreciated. Scenes depicted: waiter, masseur, water carrier, potter, fish merchant, blind musicians, horticulturist, buffalo riders, travelers taking their meals, portraitist... Perfectly preserved in its original condition.‎
