WORLD WAR I IN CHINA - MIFUNE, Shuko (photo).
Nichidoku sen'eki kinen shashin-cho "Celebratory Photograph Album of the German-Japanese War".
Qingdao: Mifune Shashinkan 1915. Second edition first printing of this album of photographs of Qingdao in the First World War. It contains many shots from the only major land battle of the war to take place in China including of heavy weaponry soldiers on the march encampments and local infrastructure. As part of the succession of unequal treaties imposed upon the Qing Dynasty in the late 19th century the German Empire leased Jiaozhou Bay in 1898 and used it to build the city of Qingdao. This became its primary naval base in the region and therefore a major target in the First World War. Under the terms of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance of 1902 Britain requested help from the Japanese Empire to dislodge the German forces. The Imperial Japanese Navy proceeded to blockade the port and land their troops putting it under siege in September 1914. The garrison held out for two months but was overwhelmed. This was the only major land battle in the Asian theatre of the First World War the second air-sea battle in world history and the second time that the Japanese had defeated a major Western power. This volume is a collection of photographs taken during the preparation fighting and aftermath of this battle. The photographer was Mifune Shuko who "accompanied the soldiers through thick and thin running through a rain of bullets facing rain and wind hunger and frost putting his body on the line to photograph the war" p. ii. The volume opens with a colour photograph of Lingyan Temple near the city of Tai'an followed by hundreds of black and white photographs showing not just the battle itself but also the city of Qingdao and its people. This second edition was released 10 days after the first edition on 25 April 1915. Octavo. With 121 pages of half-tone photographs one colour photograph of Lingyan Temple; text in Japanese and English. Single page of publisher's advertisements to rear. Original black ribbed cloth boards light green thread binding spine ends capped in purple cloth blind vertical rule to both boards front board lettered in gilt. Signature to title of "Hermann Walter 1. Nov. 1914". Boards worn a few tidemarks gilt tarnished title page with one chip to top left corner and one closed tear repaired with tape light offsetting plates bright: a very good copy. hardcover

Wright Teresa
Party and State in Post-Mao China
8vo, br. ed. 221pp. In recent decades, China has become a quasi-capitalist economic powerhouse. Yet it continues to be ruled by the same Communist Party-dominated government that has been in power since 1949. But how has China&;s political system achieved such longevity? And what does its stability tell us about the future of authoritarian versus liberal democratic governance?     In this detailed analysis of the deeply intertwined relationship between the ruling Communist Party and governing state, noted China expert Teresa Wright provides insightful answers to these important questions.  Though many believe that the Chinese party-state has maintained its power despite its communist and authoritarian features, Wright argues that the key to its sustained success lies in its careful safeguarding of some key communist and authoritarian characteristics, while simultaneously becoming more open and responsive to public participation.  She contends that China&;s post-Mao party-state compares well to different forms of political rule, including liberal democratic government.  It has fulfilled the necessary functions of a stable governing regime: satisfying key demographic groups and responding to public grievances; maintaining economic stability and growth; and delivering public services - without any real reduction in CCP power and influence.    Questioning current understandings of the nature, strengths, and weaknesses of democracy and authoritarianism, this thought-provoking book will be essential reading for all students and scholars of Chinese politics and international relations.

Twentieth Century Impressions of Hongkong Shanghai and other Treaty Ports of China: Their History People Commerce industries and Resources.
London Durban Perth Colombo Singapore Hongkong Shanghai Bangkok Batavia and Cairo.: Lloyd's Greater Britain Publishing Company Ltd. 1908. Maps numerous black and white photographic illustrations 848pp; full pebble-grained morocco gilt decorated spine gilt-lettered and ruled between raised compartments edges fully gilt 31 x 24cms modern marbled endpapers and hinges neatly strengthened worming to the boards and mainly affecting the preliminary leaves and the final fifty leaves the boards with a little edgewear a few gatherings a little proud but otherwise a good sound clean and complete copy of a work uncommon on the market. A good copy of a now remarkably scarce work profusely illustrated with remarkable black and white photographic portraits and panoramas and detailed chapters on everything from history geography culture and specific industries like shipping manufacturing agriculture and trade. Whilst earlier works in the series focussed exclusively on British colonial interests Western Australia Natal Ceylon and British Malaya the editor notes that: <br>"More than one half the imports and exports of China passes through the various Treaty Ports and it would have been a negation of one of the avowed objects of these publications if no attempt had been to show the present-day tendency of this trade and how the proportion borne by the British Empire compares with that of its competitors". The series served as a handsome soft power testament to British colonial might and aspiration. . Lloyd's Greater Britain Publishing Company, Ltd. hardcover
