The bookplates of Carrie Estelle Doheny and Edward Laurence Doheny are mounted on acid free board which sits atop the images and the totality fits snugly into the box.

The images are in the traditional format in this case illustrating nine subjects -
Royal Procession 6 images; Birds 11 images; Ships & Barges 5 ; Tea Cultivation 7; Punishments 11; Butterflies & Flowers 2 ; Butterflies & Insects 8; Court life 5; Flowers Camellias etc. 9. Each is protected in an archival paper sleeve 13 x 8.25 inches and numbered in pencil on the wrapper. Images 33 x 21 cm.

The stability of these images is greatly enhanced by their conservation. Each pith image has been backed on acid free tissue supporting the pith which is quite fragile. The vast majority of the images are complete and undamaged. A minority have small marginal cracks or small corners missing. A couple have slight browning. Each image is preserved in a numbered acid-free folder and the whole is housed in a custom brown and black leather solander box numbered XI on the front board.

Pith paintings are notoriously fragile. Crossman states "The other paper commonly used for watercolors and gouaches after 1800 was pith. ‎ALS letter home from American assistant minister/diplomat regarding the Sino-Japanese Shantung Negotiations‎

‎China 1921. Very good condition. From "Bub" to brother Philip. Bub is apparently an American assistant or undersecretary to a United States Minister/diplomat based in Peking.

He mentions the unusually hot summer and the efforts to make headway on the Negotiations "the political situation here goes from bad to worse" however there are very few ministers in town the rest are vacationing. He is tasked to 'write a report on the Sino Japanese Shantung Negotiations.' "and that is as complex as possible and they seem to be getting nowhere."

He mentions meetings with Edwin Denby Secretary of the Navy as the Minister's special representative entertaining Major General Wright Mr. Warren and Du Wellington Koo the Chinese Minister to Washington then Foreign Minister and Finance Minister. "Du Wellington Koo has been entertained right and left and I have gone to most of the dinners for him - she is one of the prettiest Chinese I have seen." referring to his wife Hui-lan Oei

The Sino-Japan Shantung Negotiations referred to the treaty between China and Japan settling the dispute over the Shantung Peninsula and its valuable resources including the Shantung Railroad and its connection to the Trans-Siberian Railway. Japan had taken over occupancy after pushing out Germany the original leaseholder. The dispute was mediated by the United States and ultimately the leasehold was returned to China.

Bub's sister Jeannie wrote him from The Colony Club in New York City regarding Philip's and presumably Papa's trip to Italy. He also mentions the visit of a mutual friend Roger Gratwick and his own intention of returning to the States next Spring. An interesting insight into diplomatic negotiations.

2 pages 4 sides 8x10.5" written in pencil original fold marks. unknown‎

‎1911. Photography. A group of 13 vernacular photographs printed on postcards taken in 1911 by an American who was involved in supporting the Xinhai Revolution of 1911. The postcards are all annotated on the verso and give a picture of US involvement in San Francisco Yokohama and Canton.

Two postcards illustrate the ties with Japan. One is a photo of a group of six Japanese in Western clothing including a young woman in a large open touring car with the annotation "This picture was taken in front of the Clift sic House Aug. 20 1911. " Cliff house was a prominent hotel in San Francisco. At this time the U.S. Navy was entertaining the Japanese training squadron in San Francisco. Another card shows two American men in rickshaws "Jinrikshas in Yokohama Japan". We presume that these men were the American naval attachés or diplomats.

The other 11 images are taken in Canton and two are related to the "72 Martyrs" that were beheaded. The annotations on the verso read:
"Martyrs" who were beheaded by orders of Imperial Government for part they took in destroying the Viceroy's office 4/27/11. Soldiers are lined up on opposite side of pond just below people standing on embankment.;
11/19/11 Soldiers Rebels & sympathizers holding religious services at the graves of 72 "martyrs" buried in Canton cemetery. The revolution consisted of many revolts and uprisings. The turning point was the Wuchang uprising on 10 October 1911 which was the result of the mishandling of the Railway Protection Movement. The revolution ended with the abdication of the six-year-old Last Emperor Puyi on 12 February 1912 that marked the end of 2000 years of imperial rule and the beginning of China's early republican era. Dr. Sun Yat-Sen led the Xinhai Revolution to victory in 1911.

The Republic of China in Taiwan and the People's Republic of China on the mainland both consider themselves the legitimate successors to the Xinhai Revolution and honor the ideals of the revolution including nationalism republicanism modernization of China and national unity. 10 October is commemorated in Taiwan as Double Ten Day the National Day of the ROC. ‎[China; Taiwan] Kai-Shek, Chiang‎

‎A Brief Summary of the New Life Movement Chiang Kai Shek strategy to defeat Communism‎

‎Nanchang Kiangsi China: The Association for the Advancement of New Life Movement 1934. Good condition. Pamphlet touting the benefits of the Chinese government led civic education program known as the New Life Movement established by General Chiang Kai-shek to promote cultural reform combat corruption and unite China under a centralized ideology.

China at the time had been threatened by Western imperialism as well as rising Japanese militarism and communism.

The New Life Movement stressed traditional Confucian morality and the Methodist notion of self-cultivation as the solution to the perceived degeneration of the Chinese people and was considered by the Kuomintang to be key element of Sun Yat Sen's Three Principles of the People. In China the New Life Movement ended in 1949.

Chiang launched this movement from his Nanjing headquarters when he was the leader of the Republic of China. He expelled Chinese communists from the party and led a successful unification of China. Despite a professed focus on reform Chiang's government concentrated on battling Communism within China as well as confronting Japanese aggression. ‎[China; Yunnan]; Little Archibald‎

‎ACROSS YUNNAN: A JOURNEY OF SURPRISES Including an Account of the Remarkable French Railway Line now completed to Yunnan-fu‎

‎London: Sampson Low Marston & Co. Ltd. 1910. Very Rare First Edition. No Copies Currently Exist in Commerce. This copy with excellent provenance having come from the War Office marked received on 22 Apr 1910. Illustrated with many full-page plates from period photographs and a large folding map. 8vo publisher's original red cloth the spine lettered in gilt the upper cover decorated with Chinese bordrs in gilt and a central calligraphic ornament in black. 164 pp. A very fine copy as close to pristine as one could hope already unusually rare this copy is also extremely well preserved. VERY RARE FIRST EDITION AND ONE OF THE FIRST BOOKS IN ENGLISH TO DESCRIBE THE PROVINCE OF YUNNAN. Archibald Little wrote a number of books on China as did his wife Alicia who called herself Mrs. Archibald Little. Little was a merchant scholar and later travel writer who'd spent many years in China. With his wife they moved to Chungking an isolated city to the far west of the country. Impossibly hot in the summer the couple had planned to build a holiday home in the cooler countryside but the authorities blocked the idea after concern that the locals would not take kindly to foreigners. An idea was then hatched for the Littles to move onto a local farm by the Yangtse River for a few months with the hope that it might get the locals used to their presence.
Published posthumously in 1910 Archibald Little's memoir of his journey across the Yunnan Province in Southwest China was one of the first comprehensive accounts of the region to be published in English. Little a skilled linguist worked as a merchant in China for over fifty years and opened up the Upper Yangtze area to steam-powered commerce. He was well known for his intrepid travels into territories not yet explored by Westerners and his record of this journey was originally published as a series of letters to the North China Herald. This book also contains Little's account of the building of the French Railway Line to Yunnan-Fu which provided a trade route from India to the Upper Yangtze region. Across Yunnan was completed and edited by Little's wife after his death in 1908. The book includes a detailed map of the area and several photographs. Research Gate
Mrs. Archibald Little began a prolific two decade literary career in London focused primarily on highlighting the plight of women. During this time she was also active politically in the feminist movement penning pamphlets lecturing and campaigning around women's property rights suffrage. Both she and her husband traveled around China although Mrs. Little had to dress as a male to avoid attracting attention which had on occasion resulted in items being thrown at her.
The book offered here is very rare. At the present time no copies appear in the marketplace or in commerce. Additionally this copy comes with very fine provenance having been owned by the British War Office. The War Office has referred to several British government organizations in history all relating to the army. It was a department of the British Government responsible for the administration of the British Army between 1857 and 1964 when its functions were transferred to the new Ministry of Defence MoD. It was at that time equivalent to the Admiralty responsible for the Royal Navy RN and much later the Air Ministry which oversaw the Royal Air Force RAF. The name 'War Office' is also given to the former home of the department located at the junction of Horse Guards Avenue and Whitehall in central London. Sampson Low, Marston & Co., Ltd. hardcover‎

‎Manuscript letter from Charles in Hong Kong to his sister Anna in the United States‎

‎Hong Kong 1873. Ephemera. Very good condition. A three page manuscript letter dated March 12 1873 from 'Charles' in Hong Kong to his sister 'Anna' in the United States. The letter was sent via San Francisco and the SS Colorado. Charles seems to be a young bachelor making his way in the Orient and he paints a detailed picture of daily events from a Westerners perspective but no real indication of why he is there.

Charles and Anna were avid letter writers this one "No. 6" for the year. He refers to Anna's letters of Dec. 29 Jan. 5 19 that were just received. He talks of his lack of a Christmas and that most people who live in Hong Kong celebrate by getting "boozy" a sport he did not relish. He "would give more for 1 pound of good tobacco than 1 barrel of the best liquor."

"For a young man who has not much determination this is the worse sic place in the world. There is nothing for him to do but play billiards & drink."

He responds to Anna's questions about paper suits which were made in Japan a Joss house and the custom to accept an offer of tea 'you will have one of these little cups 7 saucers handed to you.' that he will send the 'Ivory letters to you for Miss Harrington' and refers to Anna's husband George other family and an acquaintance Wiliam Blanchard a pilot who lived in Shanghai as well as the 'great fire'. "The only thing I can say of the great fire is that it is too bad - but it may improve Boston by having different planned building and streets." The Great Boston fire of 1872 was Boston's largest and one of the most costly fire-related property losses is American history. He ends by sending his love to other family members and a request for a letter from George.

The SS Colorado was the largest San Francisco-Panama route liner ever to sail the Pacific. She was originally brig-rigged but was altered in San Francisco in 1866 to enter the China service. In 1867 the Pacific Mail founded the first regular steamship service across the Pacific Ocean and the Colorado became the first American liner to carry mail across the Pacific to the Orient which helped pave the way for a rapid expansion of trade between California and the Orient.

4 page folded letter on watermarked paper "Hodgkinson & Co" with writing on 3 sides 8 3/8 x 10 1/8" with original fold marks. unknown‎

‎Pair of Chinese export watercolours of architectural "Views of China‎

‎Canton Guangzhou workshop 1810. Watercolour and opaque body-colour with ink on thick chinese paper depicitng 1. A Temple Compound and 2. An Imperial Pleasure Garden. Sheet size: 16 1/8 x 22 inches. An exceptional pair of Chinese export watercolours rich in architectural detail exemplifying the pictorial conventions developed to frame China for European eyes.

A fine pair of large-scale architectural fantasy views produced in a Canton workshop for the export trade at the height of the China Trade period. The compositions exemplify the hybrid artistic language developed for Western patrons by Chinese painters trained in native techniques yet attuned to foreign tastes for picturesque and monumental subjects. The first painting depicts a two-courtyard Buddhist or Taoist temple approached through a three-bay shan-men ceremonial gateway flanked symmetrically by drum and bell towers. A painted screen wall in the inner court displays guardian deities in brilliant red while the gilded Buddha presides from an elevated rear hall. The temples architecture is stylized but evocative of southern Chinese religious compounds. Above the gateway a plaque bears brush-written characters reading "Beautiful Hall of Profound Reverence" a fictive name likely invented by the workshop for decorative effect rather than to identify a specific site. The second painting shows a walled palace complex centered around a multi-tiered pavilion rising from a lotus pond filled with sculptural rocks and pleasure boats. Dragon grottoes stone causeways and ornamental bridges evoke the fantastical terrain of imperial parks such as the Yuanmingyuan rendered here in a compressed stage-set perspective. White elephants bearing crimson banners guard the main gate signaling a courtly or ceremonial setting. While reminiscent of northern gardens the details are compositional inventions rather than topographical records. The palette vermilion malachite green gamboge and carbon black and the use of crisp ink outlines are typical of late 18th-century Canton export workshops. Unlike smaller pith-paper images destined for albums these works were painted on thick laid paper of generous dimensions. Loose drawings such as these were often compiled into custom albums in British India where Chinese watercolours were often combined with Indian and Persian material to appeal to the tastes of British collectors. The Persian-Urdu foliation on the verso indicates their inclusion in such a collection likely assembled in Calcutta or Lucknow in the early 19th century. While drawing upon recognizable architectural forms and cultural symbols the views are best understood as imaginary or composite constructions designed to satisfy European curiosity about China. The temple compound reflects generic southern typologies while the palace garden borrows selectively from northern models such as the Yuanmingyuan. unknown‎
