Beautifully composed engraving of a grim subject prepared as plate 31 for the folio atlas to George Staunton's account of the Macartney Embassy to China of 1793. The figures in the foreground and the standing figures in the middle distance all have their backs turned away from the central drama: punishment of a criminal. Collection of five colour-printed Nianhua posters each of the central images onlaid within a stiff red paper border with a thin cream paper frame worn and discoloured and at the top of each a fine aqua paper border; the sheets a little creased two images with a visible tide-mark minor edge tears not affecting the images strengthened neatly on the verso with washi one with an early paper repair to the top margin all approx. 93 x 51.5cms sheet size in good condition. Five examples of "new" Nianhua posters dating from the Great Leap Forward all featuring babies and children symbolizing happiness prosperity and the promise of a thriving future. In one a sister braids her hair whilst minding her crawling toddler brother "Sweet Heart". On the wall a poster proclaiming the industrialisation of agriculture "Agriculture is the foundation of the national economy and grain is the foundation" caption; in another five toddlers dance in a circle their flags and lanterns captioned "The Great Leap Forward" and "Long Live Mao". This atmospheric image of the fort with a junk and a yacht sailing in the river in the foreground is from the official account of the Laplace voyage in the Favorite 1830-32 by voyage artist François-Edmond Pâris 1806-1893. Two half-page engravings 15 x 23 cms on a single newspaper leaf complete descriptive text for each engraving overleaf scant spotting and edge-wear but in very good condition. Two engravings published during the months prior to the attack on and four year occupation of Canton Guangzhou by allied British and French troops during the time of the Second Opium War. The commentary for the farewell by the English Consul Harry Parkes to the Mandarins "Howqua Mowqua Kinqua &c." below is markedly milder than contemporary Parliamentary reports of his actions effectively escalating tensions with the Chinese: <br>"Since the sketch was made the Chinese seem to have discovered the inutility of bringing the matter to a close by negotiations and that the Admiral is determined to be as obstinate in his firmness as the Chinese Commissioner is firm in his obstinacy." <br> <br>From the Estate of the late collector and scholar Arthur Hacker with his pencilled catalogue note. . Tuesday June 7 to Tuesday June 14 1791 issue of the Scottish newspaper Vol. XIV No. 702; pp 185 - 192. <br /> <br /> 'Sunday's Post' concerning the troubled state of trade and relations with China and the Northwest Coast of America: "Our countrymen have found a very considerable loss from the trade between China and the North West Coast of America having been so abruptly stopped by the ill conduct of the Spaniards. The latter have since formed a most advantageous intercourse between the two countries which is likely to be carried on to a very great extent." <br /> <br /> The article goes on to note trouble in Hawaii: "A small ship had been taken possession of by the Sandwich Islanders at Owhyee and every person on board killed. His role with Mao in the war against Chiang Kai-shek Jiang Jieshi World War 2 period his marriage and a record of several politically important events in his life including meeting Richard Nixon the American President. Written in Chinese. . On page 54 is an excellent photo of Zhou and Chen Boda at the Beijing mass rally of "Red Guards" "Hong Wei Bing" on August 16 1966 where Zhou wears a "Hong Wei Bing" red armband while he and Chen address the crowd of "Red Guards" in the mass rally in Beijing from the podium. . Although Mao forced Zhou to be "caretaker' of the "Hong Wei Bing" it was not something he relished although he did cooperate with Mao. . Excellent primary resource on one of the most influential intellectual progressive and highest of Chinese leaders after Mao. . Zhou was the first and highest member of the party after Mao be responsible for the "Hong Wei Bing" or "Red Guards" from the very first day of their welcome by Mao at the August 1966 mass rally. . WHO WAS ZHOU ENLAI 1898-1976: Zhou Enlai was the first Premier of the People's Republic of China serving from October 1949 until his death in January 1976. Zhou served under Mao Zedong and was instrumental in consolidating the control of the Communist Party's rise to power forming foreign policy and developing the Chinese economy. . A skilled and able diplomat Zhou served as the Chinese foreign minister from 1949 to 1958. Advocating peaceful coexistence with the West after the stalemated Korean War he participated in the 1954 Geneva Conference the 1955 Bandung Conference and helped orchestrate Richard Nixon's 1972 visit to China. He helped devise policies regarding the bitter disputes with the U.S. Taiwan the Soviet Union after 1960 India and Vietnam. . PHOTOGRAPHS: The work is lavishly illustrated with 60 period black and white photographs. Each has a Chinese caption. . London.: The Graphic. March 151890. Engraving 15.1 x 22.6 cm plus caption on a trimmed newspaper leaf slightly toned the images in very good condition. Engraving redolent of colonial Hong Kong from a sketch by an engineer of the China Squadron Charles E. Eldred the Hong Kong Almanack for 1891 lists him as being aboard the British vessel Victor Emmanuel. The Hong Kong Polo Club also had strong military ties as the original commentary attests below the Secretary of the Club was a Staff Major Fletcher of the Royal Artillery. <br> <br>"This meeting took place on November 28th having been post poned on account of bad weather. The Chinese coolies were much interested in the bagpipes of the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders probably because to their ears the sound bears a very close resemblance to that produced by a common Chinese instrument something like a flageolet. Within the enclosure almost the only people not English were the Chinese chair-coolies and the mah-Joos grooms. The chair-coolies cluster outside the Grand Stand the balcony of which is occupied chiefly by ladies. The professional coolies were naturally highly interested in the Chair Races which were the most amusing events in the programme. In the Fai-Tee Stakes the gentlemen amateurs appeared in regular coolie-costume. One of the riders borrowed his bagpipes from one of the Highland pipers; but they proved his destruction for when his team came to grief just outside the winning-post he sat on the ground playing his pipes and deafening himself to the shouts of the judges who were endeavouring to inform him that he had not passed the winning-post. In our picture the pipers have been accidently omitted.-Our engraving is from a sketch by Mr. Charles E. Eldred H.M.S. Cordelia Hong Kong." Engravings prepared for "The Illustrated London News" on the announcement of the British Governor Sir John Bowring 1729-1872 and published two months before his arrival in April 1854. A large collection of Edwardian snapshots of travels in India China north Africa and Europe
Very Good. Apart from curling at the edges the photographs are generally in excellent condition. Over three hundred Edwardian snapshots most approximately 120 × 95 mm but with some variation of travels in India China north Africa and Europe with some 'at home at ease' images as well. Many are captioned some are dated 1907 and there are occasional clues to the identity of the presumably English travellers 'Captain & Mrs Gibb & Anne' etc.; intrepid women feature prominently including on horse- and elephant-back and in motor cars. The images comprise: <p>India: approximately 135 photographs including Kashmir approximately 47 and the Darjeeling area 15 including some interesting images of Tibetan lamas performing sacred dances at a New Year festival and approximately 73 of other localities around the Raj including Ladakh the Khyber Pass Amritsar Lahore Bangalore Calcutta Benares Agra and southern India; <p>China: 34 photographs including scenes from a cruise on the Yangtze River Manchuria Peking the Great Wall and the Ming tombs; <p>Russia: 11 photographs of Siberia 7 and Moscow 4; <p>North Africa: approximately 64 photographs mainly of Algeria including Touggourt 11 Biskra 13 and approximately 40 others including desert forts with some other localities identified; <p>Spain: approximately 19 photographs mainly the Alhambra and Seville; <p>Southern Europe: approximately 13 photographs several apparently of Corsica; <p>A miscellaneous group of approximately 28 photographs including portrait snapshots at a variety of locations early motoring large country houses apparently in England hunting and fishing possibly abroad and more. <p>Approximately 304 items. unknown

Photo album with 101 images chronicling the goodwill voyage sponsored by the Imperial Japanese government for executives from 18 leading U.S. Hotels which left San Francisco on the Tatuta Maru October 1938. The itinerary included several stops at hotels in Japan and Manchukuo Japanese-controlled China and they returned Dec. 22 1938.
Portland OR: Heathman Hotel 1938. Oblong folio. 18.5 x 16.25 in. 18 leaves unnumbered. on thick beige-coloured paper w/ 101 silver gelatin photos mounted sized from 4.25 x 6 in. up to 6.25 x 8.5 in. all identified and labeled below in neat draftsman’s hand some ruling as well two images removed by family members and 1 leaf w/o lower 3rd of leaf. Recent black cloth post-binder gilt lettering stamped on front cover still VG exemplar all images with bright strong contrast from the library of Harry Heathman 1906-1962 owner and manager of the historic Heathman Hotel in Portland OR. This interesting photo album chronicles the 1938 “Entente cordiale†trip of many noted U.S. hotel managers and owners to Japan and Manchukuo China against the backdrop of continued Japanese incursions into China including the bombing of civilians in Canton and diplomatic conflicts with the U.S. Intended by Japanese officials to entice American tourists to visit Japanese hotels the hotel execs including Harry Heathman of the Heathman Hotel Charles Baad of the Los Angeles Biltmore John Ramboz of the Los Angeles Ambassador Carl Stanley of the Hotel Del Monte and others all sailed on the N-Y-K ocean liner Tatuta Maru newly renamed in 1938. The photos show the first class lounge dances and sightseeing in Japan the Tosyogu Shrine at Nikko where they stayed at the Kanaya Hotel other temples and the Buddha at Kamakura and gifts presented at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. Other stops included the famed Fujiya Hotel with photos of the owner Mr. Yamaguchi and manager M. Arai a visit to the Nagoya Castle and more. Carl Stanley and his wife are shown riding the “Asia†Express in Manchukuo the Mukden Yamato Hotel the Yamato hotel near Dairen formerly Port Arthur and photos at the Port Arthur monument in Manchukuo. The Tatuta Maru sailed originally as the Tatsuta Maru including transporting Olympic athletes from Japan in 1932 and was the last passenger liner to travel between Japan and the U.S. with stop in Honolulu H.T. in Oct. 1941. She was used by the Japanese Navy as a feint supposedly to pick up another load of repatriating Japanese departing Yokohama on Dec. 2nd but reversed course the night of Dec. 6/7 and returned to Japan. Black and white folded map 45.5 x 57.5 cm scale 1:50000 Two small red pencil marks and one in blue some careless folding of map but overall very good. This 1938 map of northern China was published in 1938 by the General Staff Headquarters of the Japanese Army and was marked as military secret. By this time Japanese military was fighting in China in various regions. This military map shows parts of 單縣 Shan County in Shandong Province 虞城縣 Yucheng County in Hennan Province and 碭山縣 Dangshan County in Jiangsu Province. . 陸地測量部参謀本部.
