Xiaolong Qiu
THE MAO CASE
Naperville IL U.S.A.: Saint Martin's Press / Minotaur Books 2010. 1st paperback printing March 2010 so stated with complete number line beginning with 1. Light wear at foot of spine reading crease and a few pages dog-eared else a near fine copy. Chief Inspector Chen Cao of the Shanghai Police Department is the head of the Special Case group and is often put in charge of those cases that are considered politically "sensitive" since as a rising party cadre he's regarded by many as reliable. But Inspector Chen though a poet by inclination and avocation takes his job as a policeman very seriously despite the pressures put upon him from within and without and is unwilling to compromise his principles as a policeman in favor of political expedience. However after the new Minister of Public Security insists that Chen personally take on a 'special assignment' an investigation already begun by Internal Security he may no longer be able to resist those pressures. The party increasingly leery of international embarrassment is unhappy about two recent books that place Mao in a bad light. Now Jiao the granddaughter of an actress who was likely one of Mao's mistresses - a woman suspected of being Mao's own granddaughter - has recently quit her job moved into a luxury apartment and without any visible means of support become a part of a new social set centered around the remnants of pre-Communist Shanghai society. What they fear is that somehow she has inherited some artifact or material related to Mao that will when made public prove embarrassing. Even though there is no evidence that such even exists Chen has been charged to infiltrate her social circle determine if the feared material exists and if it does retrieve it quietly. And in only a few days - because if he can't resolve this 'Mao case' within the deadline the party will resort to harsher more deadly means. First Printing. Pictorial Wrappers. Near Fine. Book. A CASE OF TWO CITIES
N.Y.: Saint Martin's Press 2006. First Edition November 2006 with complete number line beginning with 1. Boards lightly soiled else near fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped with protective mylar cover. "Chinese expatriate Qiu's gripping fourth Inspector Chen novel after 2004's When Red Is Black captures an honest detective's struggle to be true to his professional ideals under a repressive regime. The Communist Party leadership appears to be vigorously investigating rampant corruption among the profligate power elite during China's economic reforms of the recent past. After the head of the Fujian special case squad is murdered in sordid circumstances Chen Cao of the Shanghai police bureau discovers that the dead man had been probing a wealthy businessman Xing Xing who fled to the United States to escape prosecution. Chen himself is then given the highest authority to carry on the investigation which takes him to the U.S. but he soon realizes he's not meant to succeed. Chen stands in a class with Martin Cruz Smith's Russian investigator Arkady Renko and P.D. James's Scotland Yard inspector Adam Dalgliesh." -- Publishers Weekly Starred Review. 1st Edition. Death of a Red Heroine : An Inspector Chen Investigation EDGAR AWARD FINALIST
New York NY U.S.A.: Soho Press Incorporated 2001. First edition with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. An EDGAR AWARD FINALIST for Best First Mystery Novel. 464 pgs. "Set a decade ago in Shanghai this political mystery offers a peek into the tightly sealed often crooked world of post-Tiananmen Square China. Chen Cao a poet and T.S. Eliot translator bureaucratically assigned to be chief inspector has to investigate the murder of Guan Hongying a young woman celebrated as a National Model Worker but who kept her personal life strictly and mysteriously confidential. Chen and his comrade Detective Yu take turns interviewing Guan's neighbors and co-workers but it seems most of them either know nothing or are afraid to talk openly about a deceased highly regarded public figure. Maybe they shouldn't be so uneasy some characters reason; after all these are "modern times" and socialist China is taking great leaps toward free speech. Chen and Yu make headway when they stumble on Wu Xiaoming senior editor of Red Star magazine who apparently was involved with Guan before her death. Tiptoeing around touchy politics and using investigative tactics bordering on blackmail Chen slowly pieces together the motives behind the crime. The author himself a poet and critic peppers the story with allusions to classical Chinese literature juxtaposing poignant poetry with a gruesome murder so that the novel reads like the translation of an ancient text imposed over a modern tale of intrigue. This is an impressive and welcome respite from the typical crime novel." -- Publishers Weekly. First Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Book. Soho Press, Incorporated
