[SHANGHAI - ANTIQUE PRINT] (SIMPSON, WILLIAM).
Sketches in China: Paper-Hunt at Shanghai. caption title
London.: The Illustrated London News. April 121873. Full-page engraving 23.8 x 31.2 cm plus caption on a single newspaper leaf sheet a little toned marginal spotting the image in very good condition. The Shanghai Paper Hunt Club was founded in December 1863. The Illustrated London News' "Special Artist" William Simpson in his commentary overleaf notes that "The 67th Regiment who were stationed at Shanghai about ten years ago introduced it at this place. The character of the country here as well as the breed of Tartar ponies seem well suited to the sport." Membership of the Club remained the preserve of male expats until the late 1920s when it was opened to Chinese membership. As is suggested in the engraving whilst the prey was paper rather than foxes the sport could still be brutal for both horse and rider. Simpson brings his skill and experience as a war artist to the observation of the hunt.

William Simpson 1823-1899 Scottish war artist and correspondent joined the 'Illustrated London News' in the 1860s and covered the Abyssinian campaign 1868 Franco-Prussian war Modoc war 1873 and Second Afghan war. He had previously covered the Crimean war on behalf of publishers and lithographers Colnaghi's.

From the Estate of the late collector and scholar Arthur Hacker. . [SUFFRAGETTE CHINA].
Original Cup Saucer & Side Plate

Cup saucer and side plate; white china has strikingly clean straight lines and is rimmed in dark green with a green handle to the cup each piece carries the motif designed by Sylvia Pankhurst of the 'angel of freedom' blowing her trumpet and flying the banner of 'Freedom in the background are the initials 'WSPU' set against dark prison bars surrounded by the thistle shamrock and rose and dangling chains; the cup has one minor hairline crack otherwise all pieces are in fine condition.

Rare survival of an original Suffragette cup saucer and side plate complete with the 'Angel of Freedom' designed by Sylvia Pankhurst. Initially for use in the refreshment room of the Prince's Skating Rink Exhibition and then sold in aid of funds.

The Women's Exhibition of 1909 all but forgotten today was a tipping point in women's struggle for equal rights. The event was open to both sexes and cleverly calculated to show men that suffragettes were not the dangerous 'shrieking sisterhood' they were painted but were in fact the wives mothers and sisters they knew women safely interested in the same female pursuits they always had been women dedicated to creating beautiful things not destroying them.

'The winged angel logo was repeated on almost all promotional material. It was especially striking on the elegant white tea service specially commissioned from a pottery in Staffordshire used in the traditional tea and refreshment room during the exhibition and for sale after the event. Commemorative china was a relatively new idea and this early understanding of branding as a way of advertising was a key element of the exhibition's success making the WSPU one of the first campaign groups to understand the significance of logos' http://annesebba.com/journalism/the-womens-exhibition-of-1909/

外國人遊行之圖. 蒙古人. Gaikokujin yūkō no zu. Mōkojin. Outing Scene of a Foreigner with a Mongolian Boy.
Japan.: 山田屋庄次郎. Yamada Shōjirō. Bunkyu 1 1862. Colour woodblock print 37.2 x 25.3 cms the sheet a little age-toned a spot of browning at the foot and a pinhole in the upper margin but the image unaffected very good condition. This colour woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora is an excellent example of Yokohama-e Yokohama Prints which were very popular in Japan after the country was opened in the mid-19th century. Yokohama was one of the trading ports with the outside world and many foreigners were residing in the area. The Yokohama-e was very similar to the Nagasaki-e Nagasaki Prints and depicted people and cultures which were foreign to the Japanese. Utagawa Yoshitora was active between the end of Edo Period to the mid-Meiji Period and produced numerous Nishiki-e prints including Yokohama-e in his career. He was regarded as one of the top Nishiki-e artists around that time.

In this print a Western man is strolling outside with his dog and a Mongolian boy who carries an umbrella for him. The man is observing something in the distance and about to jot down something in his notebook with a pen which he holds in his right hand. Behind him his young attendant plays with the dog unobserved by his pre-occupied master. . 山田屋庄次郎. [Yamada Shōjirō]. unknown
