‎The 'Ever-Victorious army': a History of the Chinese Campaign Under Lt-Col C.G. Gordon, CB, RE, and of the Suppression of the Tai-Ping Rebellion‎

‎8vo, br. ed. Journalist and traveller Andrew Wilson (1831-1881) was born in India to colonial missionaries. Educated in Europe, he later edited the China Mail in Hong Kong, and the Bombay Times. This, his best known work, was published in 1868, and recounts the suppression of the Taiping uprising in 1863-1864 by Colonel Charles G. ('Chinese') Gordon, leading a small multinational force. The Taiping rebellion against the Qing dynasty lasted from 1850 to 1864, and it is estimated that some 20 million people died as a result. Wilson was given access to Gordon's journals to write the book. Wilson was very pro-Chinese, and was quite critical of British colonial policy towards China. Despite this bias, the work contains much fascinating information on nineteenth-century China, and sheds light on the early career of one of Britain's greatest Victorian military heroes.‎

A picture of this book is available upon request by email. Wilson was one of the prime botanical collectors in China and Japan in the early 1900's, introducing many species. Besides his descriptions of the plants he found, including some fascinating adventures in little explored places, he describes the geography, the native peoples and tribes, temples, timber trees, cultivated gardens and fruits, agriculture plant products, tea and tea-yielding plants, etc, during his extensive explorations, including Szechuan, Ancient Kingdom of Pa, Sungpan Ting, the Chino-Tibetan border area, Tachienly, Omei Shan, Laolin. 'He crossed the Laolin from north to south, probably the only European to have done so' [Coats - The Plant Hunters, p. 120]. There is also a much more common unsigned edition printed at the same time.‎

Die Yao zählen in China 2.796.003 Menschen (Zensus 2010). Sie leben in den bergigen Regionen im Süden und Südwesten Chinas. Daneben siedeln sie auch im nördlichen Laos und Vietnam sowie in Myanmar. Rund 60.000 Yao leben im Norden Thailands. Sie werden dort zu den Bergvölkern gezählt. Die Yao in Thailand nennen sich selbst Mien oder Iu-Mien, was so viel wie Person, Individuum oder Wesen bedeutet. In Vietnam kennt man die Yao als Dao, Dzao, Zao oder Red Dzao (Rote Dzao;eigentlich eine Untergruppe). Die Yao in China zerfallen in mehrere Gruppen und sprechen zumindest drei verschiedene Sprachen: Mien (, Pinyin Mi?ny?), Bunu (Bùn?y?) und Lakkia (L?ji?y?). Eine weitere große Gruppe, die offiziell zu den Yao gerechnet wird, spricht Zhuang. Eine Gruppe in der Inselprovinz Hainan wird auf eigenen, nachdrücklichen Wunsch offiziell zu den Miao gerechnet, spricht jedoch Mien. Diese Gruppe, die während der Qing-Dynastie auf Hainan angesiedelt wurde, bestand damals aus Soldaten und ihren Familien. Die Soldaten wurden von der Qing-Regierung zur Unterdrückung der häufig aufständischen Li eingesetzt. Obwohl die Regierung der VR China mehrfach das Angebot gemacht hatte, die Gruppe als Yao zu klassifizieren, wurde dies abgelehnt, da sie sich mit der Bezeichnung "Miao", die ihnen in der Qing-Zeit gegeben worden war, stärker identifizierten. ? Als besondere Kriegsvorbereitung wird hervorgehoben, daß beide Dörfer Krieger von auswärts mieteten, die bei ihnen verpflegt wurden, und die als Haupttrupp in die Schlacht ziehen sollten. Als Grund für diese vielen fremden Soldaten gab man an, daß man so möglichst wenig Verwundete und Tote aus den eigenen Reihen zu bedauern haben werde. Der Streit zwischen Shang Ku-ch'en und Hsia Ku ch'en wurde im letzten Augenblick durch einen Schiedsspruch beigelegt. Shang Ku-ch'en hatte aber für die Ernährung seiner Söldner bereits über 200 Pfund Schweinefleisch und etwa 100 Dollar verbraucht! Fast zwischen allen benachbarten Dörfern bestehen enge verwandtschaftliche Bande. Bricht aber ein Kampf aus, so schließen sich alle Yao im Dorf eng zusammen und kämpfen gegebenenfalls gegen ihre eigenen Blutsverwandten im feindlichen Nachbardorf. Unbedingter Gehorsam den Führern gegenüber im Kampf ist eine bei allen Yao beobachtete Selbstverständlichkeit. Größte Ehrlichkeit ist eine Haupttugend der Yao. So sind Diebstähle bei ihnen äußerst selten. Kommen sie gelegentlich doch vor, so ereilt den Schuldigen harte Strafe. Schon Leuschner berichtet, daß den Dieb fast immer die Todesstrafe treffe. Heutzutage sind die Strafen allerdings milder geworden und haben sich meist in Geldbußen gewandelt, die sich in der Höhe nach dem häuslichen Besitz des Diebes richten. In Kuangsi kommen auch Verstümmelungen als Strafen vor. So hackt man dem Dieb die Finger ab oder reißt ihm die Fingernägel aus. Wird ein Dieb allerdings mehr als zweimal rückfällig, so trifft ihn auch heute noch die Todesstrafe, die meist darin besteht, daß man den Schuldigen von einem Felsvorsprung in einen tiefen Abgrund stürzt. ?
