1880. Very good condition. An albumen photograph of an ancient Canton Guangzhou landmark known as the Five Storey pagoda once part of the city wall which still stands today in the city's largest park Yue Xiu Park. The pagoda also known as Zhenhai Tower was built in 1380 by Zhu Liangzu during the Ming Dynasty 1368-1644 and stands on the Yuexiu Hill. It is 92 feet high and has been destroyed and rebuilt five times. The building now houses the City Museum which exhibits the history of Canton from Neolithic times. 5 1/2 x 4". The Chinese mountaineering team for the 1964 expedition was led by famed Chinese climber Xu Jing who had climbed Muztagh Ata with the Soviets in 1956 retreated in the 1960 Chinese Mount Everest expedition and succeeded on Mt. Shishapangma which the last unclimbed eight-thousander in the Himalayas. Four engravings on a single newspaper leaf the largest 15.5 x 20 cm with associated text red postal stamp of the Illustrated London News edge tears and minor spotting outer edge a little rough but in very good condition. Engravings prepared for The Illustrated London News marking the gift of a Temple Bell and two vases to Queen Victoria now in the British Museum in 1844. <br>"The officials Zhou Yan and Shu Tianshou of the Ningbo-Shaoxing district in China’s southeastern province of Zhejiang ordered this bell for a temple. The inscription also names the many women who contributed to the cost of the bell’s casting and lists their prayers. Making donations to temples was a common way for believers to accumulate merit and ensure favourable rebirth. The bell’s side is inscribed with the Usnisa Vijaya Dharani Sutra. Translated into Chinese in about 700 this text became one of the most popular sacred texts among Chinese Buddhists" British Museum note. The original newspaper text notes that "The casting--the foundry work--of this bell is as remarkable as its literary character. Foreign trade had been approved at this strategically important port for the British and French by the 1860 Peking Convention. Between 1895 and 1900 the two original powers were joined by Japan Germany Russia Austria-Hungary Italy and Belgium in establishing self-contained concessions each with their own prisons schools barracks and hospitals. The main engraving shows three foreign war vessels: H.M.S. CHINA BOXER REBELLION
A Picture of Commander-in-Chief Dong's Plan to Attack the Western Forces at Yang Village
China 1899. Colour-printed woodblock. Paper toned. Minor nicks to margin. Very good condition. A Chinese print depicting a battle during the Boxer Rebellion.<br/> <br/>During the Boxer Uprising one of the ways the Boxers spread their message throughout China was through widely circulated pictures known as nianhua or "New Years' pictures." These pictures were often used to illustrate celebrations and festivals but also current events such as military victories. Since there were many people in the countryside who were illiterate the Boxers used various examples of imagery including posters placards and flags to coordinate the mass peasant movement and communicate their message of heroism and resistance against imperial powers. This print gives a close look at the battle at Yangcun. Chinese commanders led by Dong Fuxiang and his Gansu Braves were gathered in an encampment which the Western forces planned to attack. They built a bridge in order to cross the river to the encampment but the Chinese had planted mines which caused the bridge to explode and the Western forces to retreat. The print shows the Chinese forces waving swords as well as the flags of their commanders surrounding the Western soldiers from many sides as they attempt to flee some jumping off the bridge and drowning. "On the 14th day of the 7th month the Western armies arrived at Yang village. Western officers ordered the foot soldiers to build a footbridge across the river to attack the encampment. They were hit by Commander-in-Chief Dong and General Lis secretly placed mines. Our armies attacked from different directions. The Western army was decisively defeated and half of them were killed. A picture by the Daoist of Mount Song" caption translated by the National Archives. The celebratory nature of the illustration shows that it was meant to evoke feelings of patriotism and increase morale amongst the Chinese people and not intended to depict a realistic and historically accurate military scene. The pictorial style combines elements of traditional Chinese woodblock printing with some Western details with the bright colors following the nianhua tradition of the colorful New Year pictures. Two Monumental Hook-Work Parade Banners: Chairman Mao Reviewing The Great Army of the Cultural Revolution
Urumqi XinJiang Uyghur Autonomous Region: Cultural Revolution Committee of Urumqi / Xinjiang Army Divisioni 1967/8. Two extraordinary hand-crafted parade banners ca. 110" x 84" 9 feet x 7 feet one slightly smaller. Each entirely composed of hook-work with colored yarns on white muslin backing. Slight age-toning and soil; a few threads loose but no significant losses; Near Fine condition overall. Folded and stored in original velvet draw-string carrying bags as found. Both banners bear the inscription "Chairman Mao Reviewing the Great Army of the Cultural Revolution" and depict the August 1966 mass rally at Tiananmen Gate where more than 10 million Red Guards from all over China converged to express their solidarity with Mao and his second-in-command Lin Biao. Additional text on the lower banner reads "Long Live Chairman Mao for ten thousand years" and "Sailing in the ocean requires a helmsman" -- both quotes from Lin Biao. The agencies responsible for the banners are identified in lower right of each: "Cultural Revolution Committee of Xinjiang Army Division 1968" upper banner and "Cultural Revolution Committee of Urumqi 1967" lower. <br/><br/>The presence of Biao the figure to the right of Mao holding the Little Red Book in the top banner is of particular interest. Biao compiler of The Quotations of Chairman Mao popularly known as the "Little Red Book" and coiner of the phrase "Maoism" was probably more responsible than any other figure for creating the cult of personality around Mao particularly at the time of the Cultural Revolution. He quickly ascended Party ranks and was widely seen as Mao's obvious successor. But in 1971 Biao was exposed in the process of an apparent coup attempt the details of the event have never been made public. He died in an airplane crash attempting to leave China and from this point forward was officially condemned as a traitor by the Communist Party; any record of his achievements on behalf of the Revolution was expunged from the official record and any positive image of Biao would have been confiscated and destroyed as a matter of course -- suggesting either that these banners left China prior to 1971 or that they remained out of sight until some later date. The second possibility is plausible given whence the banners issued - both were created by Red Guard branches in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region an extremely remote province in China's northwest corner and for many years the center of a militant independence movement for Uyghur and other Turkic minorities. In any case the precise manner in which these banners left China will likely never be known; they surfaced at a New England antiques show in 2011. <p>Oblong Folio album ca. 25x33 cm or 10 x 13 ¼ in. 30 card stock leaves. With ca. 330 mounted original gelatin silver photos including five large images from ca. 195x26 cm 7 ¾ x 10 in to ca. 175x24 cm 7 x 9 ½ in; the rest of the photos are from ca. 125x205 cm 4 ¾ x 8 in to ca. 45x65 cm 1 ¾ x 2 ½ in. Nine photos are captioned in negative; at least eighteen with ink manuscript captions on recto or verso. With seven mounted period newspaper clippings or ephemera. Period brown faux leather album fastened with a string; gilt-lettered title “Photographs” on the front cover. Binding rubbed with chipping and losses on extremities over a dozen photos with creases losses of corners or scratches two or three photos possibly previously removed A few photos mildly faded or with mild silvering but overall a very good album of interesting photos.</p><p>Interesting extensive collection of original gelatin silver snapshot and studio photos taken and collected by an American sailor during his service on U.S.S. “Huron” and “U.S.S. “Black Hawk” in the Southwest Pacific in the 1920s. Former U.S.S. South Dakota 1908-1920 U.S.S. “Huron” served as flagship of the U.S. Asiatic Fleet in 1919-1926 “operating in Philippine waters during the winter and out of Shanghai and Yantai during the summer” Wikipedia. In 1923 the ship participated in the relief operation in Yokohama and Tokyo after the Great Kanto earthquake. U.S.S. “Black Hawk” served in the Asiatic Fleet for twenty years 1922-1942 cruising between various locations in the Philippines Manila Olongapo and China Hong Kong Shanghai Amoy/Xiamen Tsingtao/Qingdao and Chefoo/Yantai. During WW2 it served in Hawaii and Kodiak Alaska.</p><p>Most images in the album show the U.S. naval ships where the compiler served and their crew members including a large group portrait of sailors wearing the U.S.S. “Huron’s” sports uniform and a large view of U.S.S. “Huron” in Hong Kong harbour. The smaller photos include numerous scenes taken on board mostly of U.S.S. “Black Hawk” with the sailors working or resting some are captioned i.e. “scrubbing gangway in Yellow Sea en Chefoo to Shanghai me with pipe in mouth B.H.” “just like convicts” “B.H. looking forward; x - is our movie screen and o - is the movie house” “main mast” &c. images of an official ceremony on board naval exercises at sea “firing a torpedo” “standing by to fire 4 inch” portraits of the crew members several identified by the compiler i.e. “… Seaner he is at the hospital in Peking now” “F.J. Tancey from Fort Wayne apt gun deck Chefoo” “Lewis R. Hand he died the night we left Chefoo from desentery sic!” “Wirth and Mardis” &c. There are also views of the interior of U.S.S. “Huron’s” launch boat the ship’s radio tower “comforts of a man-of-war” a view “taken from inside of Hawk looking thru an air port tin cans ships and the beach” a launch boat “waiting for the Captain Chefoo” &c.</p><p>A series of photos show the U.S. naval ships in Chefoo Yantai: “a small part of the Asiatic Fleet anchored in Chefoo;” “x – is were the cans go for shelter when it gets bad also the subs. They might slip there sic! anchor and get washed up on the shore. O. Chinese fort Chefoo;” “tin cans coming in from fireing sic! Chefoo;” “cans and sampans taken at apt gun deck B.H. Chefoo;” “English gun boat in river” “repairing cans Chefoo B.H.” “more of the navy Chefoo” &. There are also several views of Hong Kong port and wharves waterfront residences on Victoria Peak Statue Square with the monument to Queen Victoria Shanghai “entering Shanghai we are in the Yangtze river” “view from B.H. outskirts of Shanghai” a view of the General Post Office building with the Suzhou Creek Qingdao “Tsingtau” &c. Several photos portray American sailors in rickshaw carts “Jew Wirth and me Oriental Hotel Chefoo” posing with Chinese girls “Sing Tat and Job” “6 Chinaman sic! Chefoo” on board the ship &c.</p><p>The large photos include two reproductions of drawings depicting the service of American sailors in China and the Philippines a map with “Distances from Guam to principal points in the Pacific. Over a dozen photos taken in the Philippines show “Hotel Abella Pagsanjan P.I.” local villages native workers dancers women boys playing a ball game and a group portrait of American sailors “in the Philippine jungles Olongpo sic! while we were in dry dock Feb. 25…” The newspaper clippings and ephemera include articles about the USS S-4 submarine disaster 1927 the appointment of U.S.S. “Pittsburg” the flagship of the Asiatic Fleet in the end of 1926 the movement of San Diego warships a receipt from “Hanson photo studio” in Tsingtau/Qingdao and a ticket to the Peak tramway in Hong Kong.</p><p>Overall an interesting content-rich visual source on the history of the U.S. Asiatic Fleet and its service near the coast of China and the Philippines in the 1920s.</p> hardcover

Historically Interesting Private Album with 239 Original Gelatin Silver Photographs of a Wealthy German Family in Beijing Showing Western Children at a Fascist Youth Camp Christmas Celebrations at a Local German School Buildings with Fascist Flags Chinese Nannies and Coolies and Beijing Streets; also with the Photos of the Compiler’s Family with Other High-Profile Europeans Miaofeng Mountain and Tan Zhe Si. Ca. 1920s-1930s.
<p>Oblong Quarto album ca. 183x288 cm. 45 card-stock leaves 10 blank. With 239 mounted original gelatin silver photographs with the larger ones from ca. 154x24 cm 6 x 9 ½ in to 147x99 cm 5 ¾ x 4 in the smaller ones ca. 66x42 cm 2 ½ x 1 ¾ in and the rest ca. 138x82 cm 5 ½ x 3 ½ in. About half of the photos with captions only indicating the age of a baby 1 photo dated. Period full-cloth album fastened with a string; gilt-tooled generic title “Photographs” on the front board; paper label of “The J. L. Hanson Co Chicago” on the back side of the rear board. About twenty pages detached occasional silvering but overall a very good album with strong interesting photos.</p><p>Historically interesting collection of lively vernacular photos illustrating the life of an upper-class German family in Beijing during the 1920s-1930s.</p><p>According to the photographs the family was likely connected to the German military stationed in Beijing from the 1920s until Japan’s invasion in 1937. During this period Germany maintained strong economic and military ties with China providing military advisors and technical assistance to the Nationalist government. The presence of a high-ranking German family suggests they may have been part of this mission involved in military training arms trade or diplomatic efforts.</p><p>The album contains 239 rare original photos likely taken by a female German expatriate in Beijing. About 160 images follow the compiler’s son from infancy showing him strolling through Beijing streets with Chinese nannies riding in carts pulled by local coolies and posing in military uniforms and Chinese conical hats with other Western children. Especially interesting are about fifteen rare photos of a fascist youth camp showing children beside fascist flags and Chinese courtyard houses dressed in uniform and participating in group activities. There are also several excellent large-size photographs of a local German school capturing costumed Christmas Eve performances and classroom scenes. The rest of the photos likely show the compiler’s husband with other high-profile Europeans at an outdoor picnic fascist flags displayed on buildings and scenic views of Miaofeng Mountain Tan Zhe Si temple roofs and surrounding landscapes.</p><p>Overall historically interesting collection of lively vernacular photos illustrating the life of an upper-class German family in Beijing during the 1920s-1930s.</p> hardcover

<p>Twelve loose gelatin silver photos all ca. 10x15 cm 4 x 5 ¾ in. Several photos with minor creases in the corners one photo with minor chipping of the image. Overall a very good collection of interesting photos.</p><p>Interesting collection of early 20th-century gelatin silver photographs of China mostly Shanghai. The views of Shanghai show Longhua Temple Pagoda Huxinting or Willow Patern Tea House and Nine Curve Bridge the Bund with the original building of the Shanghai Club built in 1864 demolished in 1909 and replaced with the current building; the Bandstand in the Bund Public Garden; Bund waterfront decorated with garlands and signs the clock tower of the Custom House is seen in the far left; river view with apparently the second Garden Bridge over the Suzhou Creek; riverfront with Chinese junks and a bridge in the foreground and Bund waterfront lawn with several telegraph poles. The other photos show a Chinese peasant ploughing a rice field traditional sculptures a reproduction of a painting depicting an audience by the Chinese Emperor and a group portrait of Indian sepoys. Overall an attractive collection of early 20th-century views of Shanghai.</p> unknown

<p>79 loose gelatin silver photographs from ca. 12 x 9.5 cm 4 ¾ x 3 ¾ in to 10 x 6.5 cm 4 x 2 ½ in. 40 images with period pencil captions on verso. Four images with “Lama Temple” stamped on verso. Overall a very good collection of strong interesting photos.</p><p>A well-preserved collection of 79 original and studio gelatin silver photographs showing Beijing written as “Peiping” in late 1946 and early 1947. The collection was likely compiled by a US Marine Corps officer serving in China as part of Operation Beleaguer 1945-1949. Operation Beleaguer was the US-overseen repatriation of Japanese and Koreans living in China’s northeastern Hebei and Shandong provinces in the wake of World War II.</p><p>Over 30 photographs show landmarks and sites in Beijing. They include the Forbidden City’s northern gate Gate of Divine Might and Hall of Supreme Harmony; the Hall of Prayer and Circular Altar Mound at the Temple of Heaven; aerial views of the Great Wall of China taken north of Beijing; the Marble Boat in the Summer Palace; a “Lama Service” at Yonghe Temple; the Beijing Guozijian; the city fortifications including the archery and gate tower described as being “the north gate on the east wall”; the White Pagoda at Miaoying Temple; the Diamond Throne Pagoda at Zhenjue Temple; the Nine-Dragon Wall at Beihai Park; Peking Union Medical College; and two bird’s eye views of the city one showing the Forbidden City from the Grand Hotel de Peking currently Beijing Hotel the other a busy street.</p><p>Also included are over 25 photographs of the streets of Beijing. They show busy street markets including a grain market; street vendors including a peddler of earmuffs and gauze masks a vegetable merchant and a knife sharpener; and street scenes near a city gate with portraits of locals including a municipal policeman a man smoking tobacco and a “militiaman.” There is also a series of six photographs showing a funeral procession.</p><p>Other photographs in the collection include the interior of a residence; a courtyard with an air raid shelter; lion statues next to cannons in front of a pavilion; statues from a Buddhist temple; and a dragon boat with many spectators in Shanghai in front of the Capitol Theatre.</p><p>Overall an interesting and well-preserved collection of original and studio photographs showing Beijing shortly after World War II.</p> unknown
