‎Aschoff 640: "Genschow war Dolmetscher-Offizier im deutschen ostasiatischen Expeditionskorps in Tientsin (China). Im Winter 1903/04 reitet er quer durch China, entlang der Ostgrenze Tibets, weiter nach Rangun. Differenzierte Beschreibung der tibetischen Grenzbevölkerung und der chinesisch/tibetischen Beziehung. Schilderung der Verhältnisse in Ta-tsien-lu (tibetisches Grenzstädtchen)", das heute Kanding heißt. Genschow war am 19. September 1903 von Tientsin in Begleitung zweier Diener nach Peking aufgebrochen. Kurz nach der Abreise schloss sich ihm der Arzt Dr. Paul Assmy an, der späer auch einen Reisebericht verfassen sollte. Von Peking wandte man sich südwärts und erreichte bereits am 8. Oktober Wuhan (Han-kau), wo sich ihm ein weiterer deutscher Offizier anschloss. Von da an ging die Reise westwärts, entlang des Jangtsekiang bis Yichang und von dort über Chengdu bis zur tibetischen Grenze, die er am 28. Dezember erreichte. Da ihm die Einreise nach Tibet verweigert wurde, reiste die Gruppe nun südwärts nach Birma (Myanmar) und erreichte Anfang März über Mandalay die Küste bei Rangun. Genschow betont schon im Vorwort kein wissenschaftliches Werk, sondern lediglich einen Bericht die Reiseerlebnisse verfasst zu haben. Das tut er mit guter Beobachtungsgabe. Die zahlreichen von ihm angefertigten Fotografien veranschaulichen zusätzlich seinen Bericht. - Innendeckel mit Buchhändlerschildchen ("Pickerl") von "Emil Rosemann, Constantinopel, Tunnel Passage 14"). - Papier gering gebräunt, vereinzelt etwas fleckig, sonst gutes Exemplar.‎

‎Eines von 100 Exemplaren der recht seltenen Luxusausgabe auf Extra-Kunstdruckpapier. Vorliegendes Exemplar zwar nicht numeriert, dafür aber mit einem auf leichtem Karton [von Genschow?] handgemalten farbigen und goldgehöhtem Wappen nebst einer eigenhändigen signierten Widmung von Genschow vor dem Frontispiz ("Zur freundlichen Erinnerung von / Deinem treuen Freund / Genschow"]. Genschow, Leutnant und Dolmetscher-Offizier im Ostasiatischen Expeditionskorps, unternahm die hier dokumentierte Reise entlang des Yangtze-Flusses bis nach Tibet in den Jahren 1903/04. Er beschreibt ausführlich alles, was er erlebte, auch die Ansichten und Eindrücke der städtischen Dörfer und Chinesen, die er selbst kennengelernt hat. Genschow betrachtet die Tibeter übrigens nicht als Chinesen. / One of 100 copies of the rather rare luxury edition on extra art paper. Present copy, although not numbered, but with a hand-painted coat of arms on light cardboard [by Genschow?] colored and gold-raised and an autograph signed dedication of Genschow front of the frontispiece ('To the friendly remembrance of / your faithful friend / Genschow'] Genschow, Lieutenant and interpreter officer in the East Asian Expeditionary Corps, undertook the documented journey along the Yangtze River to Tibet in 1903-04, describing in detail everything he experienced, including the views and impressions of the urban villages and Chinese Incidentally. Genschow does not regard the Tibetans as Chinese.‎

Written for intermediate and upper grade American schoolchildren the earlier of these two editions of this textbook published in 1900 contains a description of the Boxer rebellion that has been removed from later editions: <br> <br>" How we have longed to visit this wonderful country! A few months ago such a visit would not have been possible for China was at war with our nation and many of the nations of Europe. Our lives would have been in danger and the journey to China might have been the last we should ever have taken. <br> <br>You have heard of the Boxers of China who killed many foreigners and also many Christianized Chinese in the late revolution in that country. Do you know who these Boxers are They are members of a secret patriotic society. They love their country and want to prevent it from falling into the possession of foreigners. They believe that these foreigners have come to overthrow their government and to destroy their religion. They are opposed to the ruling family in China who are Manchus. These Manchus came from a territory outside of China Proper and Chinese Boxers have always disliked to have the rulers of their country chosen from Manchuria."
