Lufrano Richard John
Honorable Merchants: Commerce and Self-Cultivation in Late Imperial China (Studies of the East Asian Institute)
8vo, orig.cloth in dj 15cm, xii,241 pp Contents: Introduction; The Late Imperial World: Commerce, Education & Society; The Confucian Origins of Apprentice's Education; The Apprentice's Education Begins; Relations with Government & Community; Personal Relations in the Marketplace; The Market, Management, Money & Finance; Travel & Crime; Conclusion: Self-Cultivation in Mid-level Merchant Culture;Appendix: The Maoyi xuzhi Manual. In light of East Asia's current economic success, it has become increasingly clear that Confucian social thought, long assumed in Western scholarship to be a major stumbling block to economic development, can, under the proper circumstances, have exactly the opposite effect. Lufrano's study is the most sustained and sophisticated of recent reevaluations of Confucianism's role in the rapid commercial development in the late Ming to mid-Qing period. It will be of great interest and value to scholars in the growing field of Chinese business history and should be welcomed by those interested in the Confucian roots of Pacific Rim business practice. About the Author: Richard Lufrano is assistant professor of history at Barnard College.

Quelling the Demons' Revolt: A Novel of Ming China
8vo, br. ed. 213pp. In this Ming-era novel, historical narrative, raucous humor, and the supernatural are interwoven to tell the tale of an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow the Song dynasty. A poor young girl meets an old woman who gives her a magic book that allows her to create rice and money. Her father, terrified that his daughter's demonic nature might be discovered, marries her off. Forced to flee, she and others with supernatural abilities find themselves in the midst of a grotesque version of a historical uprising, in which facts are intermingled with slapstick humor and wild fictions. Attributed to the writer Luo Guanzhong, Quelling the Demons' Revolt is centered on the events of the rebellion led by Wang Ze in 1047?48. But it is a distorted, humorous version, in which Wang Ze's lieutenants show up as a comical peddler and a mysterious Daoist priest and a celebrated warrior appears despite having died many years earlier. Rather than fantastic adventures and supernatural marvels, the author points to human vanities and fixations as well as social injustice, warning of the vulnerability of any pursuit of order in a world plagued by demonic forces as well as mundane corruption. Although the story takes place long before the era in which it was written, ultimately Quelling the Demons' Revolt is the story of the Ming dynasty in Song masquerade, presciently warning of the dynasty's downfall. The novel is divided into chapters, but in many ways it is an arrangement of self-contained stories that draw on vernacular storytelling. This translation offers English-speaking readers a spirited example of social critique combined with caustic humor from the era of Luo Guanzhong.

The Magnitude Of Ming: Command, Allotment, And Fate In Chinese Culture
8vo, hardcover in dj, 400pp. Few ideas in Chinese discourse are as ubiqitous as ming, variously understood as "command," "allotted lifespan," "fate," or "life." In the earliest days of Chinese writing, ming was already present, invoked in divinations and etched into ancient bronzes; it has continued to inscribe itself down to the twenty-first century in literature and film. This volume assembles twelve essays by some of the most eminent scholars currently working in Chinese studies to produce the first comprehensive study in English of ming's broad web of meanings. The essays span the history of Chinese civilization and represent disciplines as varied as religion, philosophy, anthropology, literary studies, history, and sociology. Cross-cultural comparisons between ancient Chinese views of ming and Western conceptions of moira and fatum are discussed, providing a specific point of departure for contrasting the structure of attitudes between the two civilizations. This authoritative collection testifies to the salience of ming in Chinese culture. It will appeal to a broad readership, including those interested in the history, philosophy, religion, literature, studies of gender, and anthropology of China and other related Asian cultures.

Lutz, Jessie G [Christianity in China]
Pioneer Chinese Christian Women: Gender Christianity and Social Mobility
Lehigh University Press 2010. Hardcover. VERY GOOD. 444pp. Perfectbound in printed hard covers. Ex-library; exceedingly clean and sharp with sound binding and no evidence of use. Shipped professionally in a box. 'Chinese Christian women before the New Culture Movement and the May 4th Movement of 1919 have been largely invisible in the records of China missions and Chinese Christianity. We have known little about them either as individuals or as a group. The contributors of this volume have scoured a variety of sources to recreate the role of early Chinese women Christians in the life of the church and in Chinese society and to illustrate how gender affected their understanding of Christianity and their career choices. How did the Chinese context alter their relations with the church and with Christian and non-Christian communities What was the legacy of pioneer Chinese Christian women Essays on Chinese Christian educators doctors nurses and evangelists show how the missionaries and the church made mobility and broadened horizons possible for women. They reveal also the contributions of these women and homemakers to a changing China. Although a minority of church membership Chinese women before 1919 were the mainstay of the church: the most faithful in attendance at worship services and Mass responsible for teaching Sunday School leading the choir and organizing Bible study classes. They visited the sick engaged in charity work prepared the altar for services and fulfilled various other needs. Indeed Roman Catholic Virgins Protestant Bible women and church workers were primarily responsible for evangelizing among women and children. After all Western male missionaries found it almost impossible to proselytize among women in Chinese gender-segregated society. Missionaries soon realized that establishing Chinese Christian families was essential to the stability and continuity of congregations and Christian wives and mothers were vital to creating Christian homes and rearing children in the faith. Particularly during periods of persecution the Catholic Virgins and Christian families can be credited with the survival of Chinese Christianity. With liberalization during the 1980s many of these Christian families emerged as the basis for a growing Chinese church. The Christian church and Christian missions provided avenues for women's social mobility as well. Missionary wives founded girls' schools and eventually most central stations included a primary and secondary school for girls. Virgins and Bible women memorized or learned to read religious texts. Thus a significant proportion of female converts attained literacy and new self-confidence. The first women's colleges prepared women for new careers and economic independence while the establishment of hospitals opened up careers for women as doctors and nurses.' Publisher's blurb. Ethnographic Plague: Configuring Disease on the Chinese-Russian Frontier (ISBN:9781349955626)
8vo, br. ed. Challenging the concept that since the discovery of the plague bacillus in 1894 the study of the disease was dominated by bacteriology, Ethnographic Plague argues for the role of ethnography as a vital contributor to the configuration of plague at the turn of the nineteenth century. With a focus on research on the Chinese-Russian frontier, where a series of pneumonic plague epidemics shook the Chinese, Russian and Japanese Empires, this book examines how native Mongols and Buryats came to be understood as holding a traditional knowledge of the disease. Exploring the forging and consequences of this alluring theory, this book seeks to understand medical fascination with culture, so as to underline the limitations of the employment of the latter as an explanatory category in the context of infectious disease epidemics, such as the recent SARS and Ebola outbreaks. About the Author: Christos Lynteris is a social anthropologist working on biopolitical and visual aspects of infectious disease epidemics. He is Senior Research Associate at CRASSH, University of Cambridge, UK, and Principal Investigator of the European Research Council funded project Visual Representations of the Third Plague Pandemic. He is also the author of The Spirit of Selflessness in Maoist China (2012).
