Shanghai 1930. Otherwise very good condition. Broadside advertising the Shanghai silk company with text in Chinese and English illustrated with woodcut of the silk company at the upper right. Chinese silk production for foreign markets had benefited from the near collapse of the European silk industry caused by the silkworm disease pebrine during the 1850s and 1860s; Nanjing Road became the earliest shipping street in Shanghai and over time the premier shopping street in China. Text and border printed in red on thin brown paper. Paper size: 10 1/2" x 16. Original folds cracked on fold lines tears to the left edge with some marginal loss ruffled. Clayton and Bell Stained Glass template of Chinese saints for the west window of St. John the Evangelist Friern Barnet
1902. Very good overall. A large sketch for a stained glass window most likely martyrs of the Boxer Rebellion in which many Chinese Christians were executed in 1900. The design by Clayton and Bell one of the preeminent Victorian stained glass workshops was founded by John Clayton and Alfred Bell in 1855. The two developed glass of remarkable luminosity. The illustration consists of four Chinese figures standing on clouds the foremost a woman in flowing robes; behind her are a woman and two men wearing hats. The window was designed for St. John the Evangelist in Friern Barnet in North London UK. Pencil drawing highlighted with color 39 1/2 x 18" period folds. <br/><br/> unknown
