Text in English Chinese and French. In good condition. Portfolio covers have light bumping to edges and light overall scuffing and soiling. Some of the plates have the number written in ink on the bottom corners not all of them correct. One plate Plate 9 has "top" and an arrow written in the margin. Otherwise plates are clean and bright and remainder of pages are unmarked. Not Ex-library This monograph documents the murals discovered in the tomb of Li Chung-jun Li Chongrun excavated at Chienhsien Shensi Province now Shaanxi in 1971-72. The tomb among the largest Tang Dynasty tombs excavated to date contained murals covering 400 square meters depicting ceremonial guards court attendants musicians hunting scenes architectural elements and floral designs. The accompanying text discusses Li Chung-jun's life as the son of Emperor Zhongzong and grandson of Emperor Gaozong executed in AD 701 under Empress Wu Zetian's order. The publication analyzes the murals' artistic techniques including chieh hua "boundary painting" and explores social hierarchies and Confucian ideology in Tang society. Includes an abstract in English French and Chinese list of plates an architectural schematic diagram of tomb structure; and 40 plates reproducing the artworks in detail. Wenwu Press, Peking hardcover

Interestingly as well as an inset map of the South China Sea claiming all islands inside the 9-Dash Line as Chinese and providing their names in pin-yin the outline of China on the wrapper also features a 9-Dash Line protruding to the south. The disputes in the South China Sea over ownership of the islands that started in 1970 had become a contentious issue by 1981 when this map was published. . At first glance this novel may appear unremarkable however it is of considerable interest in the 20th century history of Chinese-European relations as it includes on page 26 what is believed to be the earliest published reference to the infamous sign in Shanghai's Public Garden which purportedly stated "Dogs and Chinese not Admitted". The sign has now been conclusively shown not to have stated this however references to the racist wording still appear to this day and the reporting of its existence has caused and continues to cause a great deal of ill feeling. <br> <br>Reginald Johnston former tutor to Pu Yi the last emperor of China wrote in a 1927 pamphlet issued by the Tianjin British Committee of Information that the anti-Chinese wording "it is a kind of slander which takes a lot of killing and survives even the most authoritative denials". He wrote a great deal about China in the years that followed and became deeply involved in Chinese politics. Scale of 1:1300000. Divided into eight panels measuring 54.5 x 79cm. Little light browning tide mark left margin barely intruding into printed image few tiny chips at extremities mended on reverse with washi in few places though overall in very good condition. A curious and colourful map of Guangdong issued towards the end of the Nanjing decade detailing the province's local political divisions its infrastructure such as roads railways and telegraph lines as well as its topography through stylised mountain ranges ridges and passes. <br> <br>Inset maps of Hong Kong and Macau noted as foreign concessions alongside maps of the South China Sea and Paracel Islands ostensibly affirms the status of these territories as rightful components of Guangdong in the view of the Kuomintang Government. . Ca. 1920s-1930s.
<p>Oblong Quarto album ca. 183x288 cm. 45 card-stock leaves 10 blank. With 239 mounted original gelatin silver photographs with the larger ones from ca. 154x24 cm 6 x 9 ½ in to 147x99 cm 5 ¾ x 4 in the smaller ones ca. 66x42 cm 2 ½ x 1 ¾ in and the rest ca. 138x82 cm 5 ½ x 3 ½ in. About half of the photos with captions only indicating the age of a baby 1 photo dated. Period full-cloth album fastened with a string; gilt-tooled generic title “Photographs” on the front board; paper label of “The J. L. Hanson Co Chicago” on the back side of the rear board. About twenty pages detached occasional silvering but overall a very good album with strong interesting photos.</p><p>Historically interesting collection of lively vernacular photos illustrating the life of an upper-class German family in Beijing during the 1920s-1930s.</p><p>According to the photographs the family was likely connected to the German military stationed in Beijing from the 1920s until Japan’s invasion in 1937. During this period Germany maintained strong economic and military ties with China providing military advisors and technical assistance to the Nationalist government. The presence of a high-ranking German family suggests they may have been part of this mission involved in military training arms trade or diplomatic efforts.</p><p>The album contains 239 rare original photos likely taken by a female German expatriate in Beijing. About 160 images follow the compiler’s son from infancy showing him strolling through Beijing streets with Chinese nannies riding in carts pulled by local coolies and posing in military uniforms and Chinese conical hats with other Western children. Especially interesting are about fifteen rare photos of a fascist youth camp showing children beside fascist flags and Chinese courtyard houses dressed in uniform and participating in group activities. There are also several excellent large-size photographs of a local German school capturing costumed Christmas Eve performances and classroom scenes. The rest of the photos likely show the compiler’s husband with other high-profile Europeans at an outdoor picnic fascist flags displayed on buildings and scenic views of Miaofeng Mountain Tan Zhe Si temple roofs and surrounding landscapes.</p><p>Overall historically interesting collection of lively vernacular photos illustrating the life of an upper-class German family in Beijing during the 1920s-1930s.</p> hardcover
