Copperplate engraving image 7 x 11 1/2 inches 18 x 29 cm on sheet 10 1/4 x 15 inches two vertical folds as issued a few small foxed spots little creasing at folds very good condition. A striking view of the important trade city of Canton one of the first treaty ports. The harbor is a riot of activity with ships of all sizes and shapes; the image is after the work of Joan Nieuhof whose 17th century views were amongst the earliest reliable reports of China. Nieuhof was traveling as a member of a Dutch East India embassy eager to establish trade relations with China. This engraving was published in an 18th century compendium of important travel writing: "A New General Collection of Voyages and Travels" published by Astley. . unknown

A map of Shanghai issued by the Japanese newspaper in 1932 at the time of the Japanese bombing. There are 4 insets. At upper left a small map of the area around Shanghai at lower left a photographic view of the Bund with legend naming 19 buildings; above this a small inset "Map of Nangking" Nanjing or Nanking; at lower right a large inset of the central south coast of China and Taiwan. Eleven illustrations showing the process of silk manufacture: "Manner of winding the Silk from the Codsin a Cauldron"; "A Balneo Mariae to kill the worms in the Cods"; "Taking the Cods from the Mats after smother'd in the Earthen pots"; "Winding of Silk from the Cods in a Copper of warm Water"; "Other ways of winding the Silk"; "Sheets of paper hung up with Eggs;" "Weaving;" "Reeling & Doubling;" "Warping;" "A twisting Mill;" "Winding from the Clews to the Bobbins." This is a plate from Du Halde's "A description of the empire of China and Chinese-Tartary: together with the kingdoms of Korea and Tibet: containing the geography and history natural as well as civil of those countries" published in London in 1738. Originally published in French in 1735 this was an encyclopedic compendium by Jesuit priest Jean Baptiste Du Halde of the written accounts of some 27 Jesuits in China documenting the history and customs of the country. . unknown

New York.: London and New York Printing and Publishing Company. No date. Ca. 1850. FOUR STEEL ENGRAVINGS with tissue guards 8 pages of text 12 x 9 1/4 inches pictorial paper wrappers. Plates in fine condition one plate is on a smaller sheet of paper but does not appear to have been cut down spine is split and pages are loose. This is a single semi-monthly part of what appears to be the American edition of "China in a Series of Views Displaying the Scenery Architecture and Social Habits of that Ancient Empire." designed to de-mystify the great empire of China. It contains 4 steel engravings and several unrelated subject-wise pages of text and is complete as issued. The engravings are: Temple of the Bonzes in the Quang Yen Rock; Ancient Bridge Chapoo; Military Station near the City of Chokian / Melon Islands and Irrigating Wheel. Subscription publication was common during the 19th century making publications more affordable to the rapidly expanding middle class market and this method where illustrations and text are unrelated was used to deter subscribers from quitting partway through their subscription. The advertisement on the back cover gives the title "The Chinese Empire: A Comprehensive History of the Manners Customs Industries and Arts of the Chinese. by Rev. G.N. Wright. Magnificently Illustrated with Numerous Steel Engravings from Sketches taken on the Spot. by T. Allom Esq." A bird's eye view of the temple of Pau Lin Shi near Nanjing after the work of Joan Nieuhof whose 17th century views were amongst the earliest reliable reports of China. Nieuhof was traveling as a member of a Portuguese embassy eager to establish trade relations with China. This engraving was published in an 18th century compendium of important travel writing: "A New General Collection of Voyages and Travels" published by Astley. . unknown

An exquisite example of French botanical art at its high point in the early nineteenth century this fine print is by Pancrace Bessa a contemporary of P.J. Redoute interpreted in the delicate medium of stipple engraving by Dufour. It was published in "Traite des Arbres et Arbustes que l'on cultive en france en pleine terre. Seconde edition 'nouveau Duhamel' considerablement augmentee" Dunthorne 243 a multi volume work documenting trees and shrubs cultivated in France and a showcase for the artistry of P.J. Redoute and Pancrace Bessa. This is plate 53 from Volume 5. . unknown
