Während andere Künstler in unserer Zeit sich der Natur und insbesondere einer vom Menschen unberührten oder losgelösten Natur zuwenden, beschäftigt sich Gerd Winner gerade mit der Umgebung und den Dingen, die der Mensch für sich selbst erfunden, konstruiert und gebaut hat: der Stadt- und Industriewelt. Hierbei bedient er sich vorwiegend der Technik des Siebdruckes, den er zu ungeahnten Möglichkeiten weiterentwickelt hat. Während in seiner Traffic-Serie von 1969-1971 mit flächigen Ansichten von Bussen, Lastwagen und U-Bahn-Wagen ein zwei-dimensionaler Bildaufbau mit vorzugsweise symmetrischer Gliederung des Motivs vorherrscht, der als Huldigung an die Technik aufgefasst werden kann, beginnt bereits ab 1970/71 nach einem Studienaufenthalt in London die Auseinandersetzung mit der Stadt und ihrer Selbstzerstörung. Dem Thema angepasst, veränderte sich auch die Technik des Siebdrucks, die Farben werden in mehreren Schichten übereinandergedruckt und dienen mehr und mehr der Charakterisierung einer psychologischen Situation als der einer objektiven Realität. Obwohl keine Menschen auf Winners Bildern zu sehen sind, spürt man doch förmlich deren Existenz und Verletzlichkeit in einer von Verfall gekennzeichneten Welt. Ein Aufenthalt in New York bringt uns Bilder mit engen Straßenschluchten und den durch Schatten noch verstärkten "Irrgärten" der Feuerleitern als Sicherheitsvorkehrungen und Fluchtmöglichkeiten. Neben diesen Ansichten mit strengen konstruktiven Elementen entstehen die sogenannten Erosionsbilder, in denen sich Winner vorzugsweise dem Detail widmet. Gutes Exemplar.

Lucian Bernhard, eigentlich Emil Kahn (* 15. März 1883 in Cannstatt bei Stuttgart; ? 29. Mai 1972 in New York City), oft auch Lucien Bernhard, war ein deutscher Grafiker und Designer der Neuen Sachlichkeit, Typograf, Architekt und erster Professor für Plakatkunst überhaupt. Die Familie von Schriften, die er entwickelte, wird als Bernhard bezeichnet. Kaffee Hag, Pelikan und die Bosch-Zündkerze sind noch heute stilistisch von Lucian Bernhard geprägt. (Quelle: Wikipedia).
