Darling, Sharon S
Chicago Metalsmiths: An Illustrated History
This is a very good or better hardcover copy without dust jacket as issued with almost no wear. Completely clean. This monograph was prepared to accompany the exhibition at the Chicago Historical Society in 1977. Sharon Darling's work at the Society sparked or at least co-incided with a revival of interest in the decorative arts work in Chicago around the turn of the twentieth century. She has also produced monographs on the ceramics of the period, notably Teco Pottery. This exhibition took an expansive view of the Chicago School, with the first works in the show being silverware from a number of firms like Sherwood & Whatley, Edwards & Company, and Speer & Cosper, active in the early nineteenth century. The exhibition had many highlights: Robert Jarvie's exquisite silver punch bowl and silver water pitcher of 1911; the many Kalo Shop Arts & Crafts designs, bronze andirons by Prairie School architect George G. Elmslie (executed by Jarvie), Falick Novick's 20th century copperwork, etc. Illustrated throughout in black & white with 155 works catalogued and photographed, many with small photos of the maker marks. Bibliography. Superb and essential reference work for Chicago metal smiths. 9" square, 141 pages. This book will be securely wrapped and shipped with tracking.

Universal Harvester: A Novel
New York : Farrar Straus and Giroux 2017. 2017. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 1st ed. 1st printing ; 214 pages ; 22 cm ; ISBN 9780374282103 9781925321937 9781250159991 0374282102 1925321932 1250159997 ; OCLC 947147125 ; LCCn 2016025809 ; LOC no PS3604.A748 U55 2017 ; Dewey PS3604.A748 ; "The second novel from the author of Wolf in White Van inspired by his years living in a small town in Iowa"-- Provided by publisher.; Life in a small town takes a dark turn when mysterious footage begins appearing on VHS cassettes at the local Video Hut. So begins Universal Harvester the haunting and masterfully unsettling new novel from John Darnielle author of the New York Times Bestseller and National Book Award Nominee Wolf in White Van. Jeremy works at the Video Hut in Nevada Iowa. It's a small town in the center of the state-the first a in Nevada pronounced ay. This is the late 1990s and even if the Hollywood Video in Ames poses an existential threat to Video Hut there are still regular customers a rush in the late afternoon. It's good enough for Jeremy: it's a job quiet and predictable and it gets him out of the house where he lives with his dad and where they both try to avoid missing Mom who died six years ago in a car wreck. But when a local schoolteacher comes in to return her copy of Targets-an old movie starring Boris Karloff one Jeremy himself had ordered for the store-she has an odd complaint: "There's something on it" she says but doesn't elaborate. Two days later a different customer returns a different tape a new release and says it's not defective exactly but altered: "There's another movie on this tape." Jeremy doesn't want to be curious but he brings the movies home to take a look. And indeed in the middle of each movie the screen blinks dark for a moment and the movie is replaced by a few minutes of jagged poorly lit home video. The scenes are odd and sometimes violent dark and deeply disquieting. There are no identifiable faces no dialogue or explanation-the first video has just the faint sound of someone breathing- but there are some recognizable landmarks. These have been shot just outside of town. In Universal Harvester the once placid Iowa fields and farmhouses now sinister and imbued with loss and instability and profound foreboding. The novel will take Jeremy and those around him deeper into this landscape than they have ever expected to go. They will become part of a story that unfolds years into the past and years into the future part of an impossible search for something someone once lost that they would do anything to regain. "This chilling literary thriller follows a video store clerk as he deciphers a macabre mystery through clues scattered among the tapes his customers rent. A page-tuning homage to In Cold Blood and The Ring." -O: The Oprah Magazine ; "Universal Harvester is so wonderfully strange almost Lynchian in its juxtaposition of the banal and the creepy that my urge to know what the hell was going on caused me to go full throttle . . . But Darnielle hides so much beautiful commentary in the book's quieter moments that you would be remiss not to slow down." -Abram Scharf MTV News ; dark grey cloth in color pictorial dustjacket ; FINE/FINE

New York : Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2017. hardcover

Like A Sister: A Novel
New York : Harper Collins c1999. 1999. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 1st. 1st printing ; 192 pages ; 22 cm ; SIGNED by author on title page ; ISBN 9780060193607 0060193603 ; OCLC 41272958 ; LCCN 99015621 ; LOC No PS3554.A844 L54 1999 ; gold and black cloth in color pictorial dustjacket ; Sister cannot say exactly when or where she was when she first saw--heard--that look and maybe it was sometime at night after she lay down to sloop but she saw it. Then her eyes sprang wide and her lips parted and she repeated over and over like a sinner's prayer how she would not sorry away like Marnie.-- From Like a Sister ;It is 1956 and Sister is only thirteen years old but she is a mother to her two younger twin brothers and her toddler sister. Her mother Marnie has had a string of boyfriends and her latest is more interested in building up business at his new café than he is in raising three children that are not his own. Marnie is involved in the café as well--but Sister is not exactly sure how. All she knows is that Marnie isn't around very much. Things weren't always this way--at one time they were close "just like sisters." Now it seems they are strangers and Sister has noticed that the neighbors are giving each other looks--looks that say that whatever Marnie is up to at the café it isn't respectable. Deciding that she will not follow in Marnie's footsteps Sister begins to take charge of her life as best she can by minding her manners and by befriending her kindly next-door neighbor Willa who seems to Sister to be a fine example of how a mother should be. But then Ray Williams a respected and powerful man in town begins to notice the blossoming Sister and when he realizes that she has no adult supervision he sets his sights on her. Willa steps in to intervene and Sister thinks she may have found salvation but in Like a Sister all is never what it seems. ; A haunting coming-of-age tale Like a Sister will linger in the minds of readers long after the last page has been turned. -- Source: Publisher ; Janice Daugharty is Artist-in-Residence at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton Georgia.
