Bauhaus
br. La storia e l'eredità della scuola fondata nel 1919 da Walter Gropius sono inseparabili dalla vicenda della Repubblica di Weimar. "Ma il Bauhaus non si limitò a riflettere gli alti e bassi della realtà: cercò anche di mutarla. Quando si voleva eternare il caos, il Bauhaus rivendicò, con Gropius, l'ordine. Quando più tardi si cercò di eternare l'ordine vacillante e oppressivo della razionalizzazione industriale, il Bauhaus, con Meyer, si adoperò per dare a questa razionalizzazione un contenuto sociale". Nel dopoguerra Tomás Maldonado dovette fare i conti con l'esperienza del Bauhaus quando, con altri, avviò a Ulm la Hochschule für Gestaltung, la nuova scuola di progettazione che ha segnato in modo indelebile la storia del design nel secondo Novecento. E in diverse circostanze prese posizione nei confronti della "tradizione Bauhaus", con un atteggiamento critico e controcorrente che voleva riportarne il lascito culturale dal piano del mito a quello della realtà. La collezione di scritti, lettere e interventi risalenti al lungo periodo tra il 1955 e il 2009 si confronta con uno snodo storiografico decisivo per il design e solleva una serie di questioni ancora attuali: il rapporto tra arte e design, la formazione dei progettisti, l'importanza della scienza per l'attività progettuale e, non per ultimo, il ruolo politico e la responsabilità del designer nei confronti dei grandi problemi sociali e ambientali del nostro tempo. Ogni critica al Bauhaus è in realtà per Maldonado un'occasione per discutere questioni contemporanee e questa raccolta, esplorando la discontinuità fra il passato e la nuova visione pedagogica e sociale di Ulm, ne rivela la straordinaria modernità.

For during a time when normal communication remained impossible and the cries of agony defiance and muted hope were unheard by most of the world's population men women and children still found the inner courage to express their most intimate emotions by creating songs drawings poems and writings. This extraordinary booklet records their enduring spirit and inner courage in the nightmare world of the Nazi camps. The works of art reproduced in this volume were created between 1940 and 1945 in concentration camps and ghettos by victims of Nazi oppression and rescued after the Holocaust by Miriam Novitch and other members of the Ghetto Fighters Kibbutz in Israel. They are part of a collection over 2000 drawings in the Ghetto Fighter's Museum located on the Kibbutz. Upper spine creased and corners slightly bumped thus affecting pages throughout.
