The work of the Brazilian artist Artur Barrio b. 1945 Portugal consists mainly of 'situations' or temporary synaesthetic installations made of perishable fragile and organic materials such as coffee bread urine charcoal wine cloth texts and so on. The ephemeral character of Barrio's installations compels the artist to seek alternative documentary techniques: photo film the artist's book etc. In this respect as well as in his approach to material and what is known as the 'didactic' mission there are similarities in his work in content and form to that of Joseph Beuys b. 1921 Krefeld - d. 1986 Dusseldorf. The 'Barrio - Beuys' exhibition presents the work of these two artists for the first time in an 'imaginary dialogue'. The SMAK will be the first museum where Artur Barrio has created a temporary installation so closely related to the museum and parallel to the work of Joseph Beuys. Following this Artur Barrio will visit several other European museums with a substantial Beuys collection where he will be able to continue his 'imaginary dialogue'. The staff at Phillips together with help from the Gio Ponti Archives were able to stage a recreation of one of Gio Ponti and Piero Fornasetti's most remarkable interior designs. Essays by Brian Kish and Salvatore Licitra, Curator of the Gio Ponti Archives and grandson of Ponti. The Casa Lucano, a large apartment in the elegant Fiera district in the north west of Milan, was completed in 1951. The interiors of this apartment were like stage sets. Designed by Ponti and Piero Fornasetti they included case furniture, wall decorations, screens, and other pieces of decorative art. Works by Gambone, Fausto Melotti and furniture designed by Fornasetti or Ponti and painted by Edwina Altera. There are a number of vintage black & white photographs of the apartment in the 1950's. The sale consisted entirely of Scandinavian modern design. One part of the sale included an important group of Axel Salto ceramics from a New York collector. The rest of the sale included wood furniture, lighting, metal work, textiles, glassware, etc. No prices realized sheets, just price estimates for each lot. 254 lots in the sale. All illustrated, most in color. 13" high X 10" wide. Large heavy book, foreign shipping will be extra. This book will be securely wrapped and packed in a sturdy box and shipped with tracking.
