‎[DESIGN] Sugiura HISUI, designer‎

‎MITSUKOSHI MITSUKOSHI TIMES & OSAKA MITSUKOSHI 44 ISSUES‎

‎1908. DESIGN Sugiura HISUI designer. MITSUKOSHI; MITSUKOSHI TIMES; OSAKA MITSUKOSHI Tokyo & Osaka 1908-1923. Western-style magazines 24.9 x 18.4 cm decorated wrappers. Lovely covers most by Sugiura Hisui 1876-1965 or designed under his supervision. Hisui is the most important figure in the development of Japanese commercial art in the 20th century the progenitor of "Taisho Chic" and a force to be reckoned with as a practical designer at Mitsukoshi and an educator at the Japan School of Art the Imperial School of Fine Art and the Tama Imperial School of Art which he co-founded. He even spent two years in Europe in the early 20s researching design. He created many portfolios of design examples for professionals wrote treatises on the principles of design and was a tireless creator of posters and magazine covers. He began work at Mitsukoshi in 1908 as a design consultant in charge of cover art for the house organ MITSUKOSHI TIMES. When MITSUKOSHI magazine began in 1912 he had already been promoted to head of design for the company a year earlier and stayed in that position for decades. His artwork graced the covers of many magazines over the years but it was his work for MITSUKOSHI and MITSUKOSHI TIMES and OSAKA MITSUKOSHI that began his design career. We are offering here a group of issues of those magazines most with his brilliant cover art. The magazines as a form of trade catalog and guide to fashion for the well-heeled clientele of Mitsukoshi department store were intrinsically ephemeral. They are hefty magazines a vade mecum for the bon ton with pictures of summer frocks kimono fabrics morning coats shoes - with instructions on how they should be cleaned stored worn. With pictures and prices and order sheets. Useful and used then thrown away they are seldom found today. A gathering of this size is quite unusual especially as it begins with issues of MITSUKOSHI TIMES from 1908 - the year that Hisui took over design reponsibilities for the house organ. The issues: MITSUKOSHI TIMES 11 issues from 1908-13 Oct & Nov Meiji 41 1908; V.8 #s 4 & 6; V.10 #s 9 & 11; V.11 #s 4 7 11 & 14 V.12 #3. MITSUKOSHI 31 issues from 1912-1923 V.2 #4; V.4 #s 5 6 7 & 8; V.5 #s 4 5 7 & 8; V.6 #s 2 & 11; V.7 #s 6 7 & 8; V.8 #s 2 3 4 5 & 7; V.9 #s 4 5 6 7 9 & 12; V.10 #s 4 6 & 12; V.11 #11`; V.12 #3; V.13 #6. Kyoto Unsodo 24.0 x 16.3 cm 61 numbers of the 70 numbers printed in the BIJUTSUKAI design series Numbers 1 thru 61 Originally issued in 70 volumes in the early 1900s. Number one was published on January 1st Meiji 36 1903 Number 61 in 1905. Over 1200 color woodblock printed designs. A remarkable achievement by most of the important designers of the day. Bijutsukai printing is always good the early printings here are extraordinary In very good condition though number one is a bit tired. Enclosed in an old clasped chitsu case. There is quite a bit of confusion about this series BIJUTSUKAI and the SHIN-BIJUTSUKAI series which followed it. They are two different sets of design. The BIJUTSUKAI was printed under the general rubric of Shinbijutsukai but they are two different works pubished with two different series titles and numbering. Early printings of the BIJUTSUKAI have become unusual such a long run of the individual issues unheard of. unknown‎

‎Plauen: Christian Stoll 1915. Vibrant Art Deco ornamental design Plate 1 from Volume XV of Kunstgewerbliche Schmuckformen für die Fläche. Christian Stoll's influential pattern book series was an important source for graphic design in central Europe from the height of the Art Nouveau movement to the early days of Art Deco. Modernist surface designs like this one reflected the avant-garde painting styles of the early twentieth century including Cubism abstraction and distortion. The geometric shapes and vivid colors were elements of a new style of ornamentation that found expression in architecture and the applied arts. An exemplary Art Deco design from a major pattern book. Single pochoir plate of a geometric airbrush design measuring 9.5 x 7.25 inches. Tipped to black paper mount with publisher's label mounted to upper right corner. Archivally matted to 14 x 11 inches. ‎[FASHION -- ORIGINAL DESIGN ARCHIVE] [ROSS MIZELLE, Marian Adrienne(Designer); GERNES, Sara Desaix McManigal Evans (Pres of Gern‎

‎An eye-catching archive of 150 original fashion designs by young Marian Ross created primarily for the Gay Gibson label at Gernes Garment Co. through the 1960’s with some of her late 1950’s designs for women’s wear reflecting the very influential fashion trends of Dior Givenchy Cardin Courreges and Simonetta. Many reflect into the 1960’s Dior’s “New Look†with emphasis on hourglass figure small waist billowing skirts and elegant cocktail dresses along with those of slimmer fashions and clean lines of Coco Chanel with a focus on translating these for young women juniors and young teens marketed throughout the Midwest under the Gay Gibson label.‎

‎New York NY Kansas City MO & Carmel Santa Barbara & San Francisco CA: Marian Ross Mizelle Madrigal 1955-1974. Four Vols. and original Store Sign for Carmel CA boutique. Folio. 2 - 12 x 15.25 in. & 2 - 13 x 19 in. 48; 48; 48; 48 pp unpaginated. all w/ mylar sleeves archival black paper insert backings with 151 original designs in gouache watercolour chalk and pen & ink 38 in pen & ink or pencil sized from 7 x 11 in. up to 10 x 15 in. and nearly all signed by Marian Ross three feature original fabric sample swatches affixed to them including one w/ pencil MS “Winner†and mimeographed description affixed to verso several of them are translucent pochoir stapled to backing paper many are on thick stiff studio board while others on assorted textured paper stock. In addition there are three newspaper and magazine clippings 1966 & 2013 a photostat copy of early Ross Mizelle “Mod†fashion designs and original black & white silver gelatin photo of young Marian Ross modeling a wedding dress. All are preserved in flexible vinyl portfolios printed labels on spines some minor scuffing & shelfwear to portfolios occasional very minor closed tears or edgewear to the designs a few w/ minor holes from removed staples still an exemplary archive of designs together with the original Madrigal signboard sized 16 x 27 in. from their Carmel CA store. This sensational archive of original fashion designs for Kansas City MO based department store suppliers by Marian Ross Mizelle before her move to California in the 1970’s to establish the Madrigal boutique with her husband Elliot A. Mizelle 1916-2007. These vividly reveal the Mid-20th-Century fashion trends following World War II. Many of the designs in this collection reflect the transition from the late 1950’s elegance and emphasis on Dior’s “New Look†highlighting femininity and opulent use of fabrics towards the more youthful designs emerging out of Swinging London which were a slimming down beginning to raise hemlines with short skirts bolero tops and increasing influence of Pierre Cardin Andre Courreges and Givenchy. The Mid-20th-Century saw a tremendous upsurge in marketing slimmer lines tighter fitting bodices and fashions emerging from such cultural events as Audry Hepburn in her iconic 1961 “Breakfast at Tiffany’s†film which heavily influenced a generation of young women.Young Marian Ross b. 1936 after completing her Fashion Academy certificate in 1955 free-lanced and worked in the New York fashion industry before landing with the influential and hot-selling Gay Gibson label with Gernes Garment Co. in 1961. The Gernes Garment Co. had been originally founded in 1928 by Sara Desaix Gernes 1896-1978 and her husband Alexander Gernes 1882-1947 to market her groundbreaking fashion designs targeting everyday fashion for young women juniors and teens. Her designs proved very popular as she initiated and fashioned sizing and dresses and clothing for teenagers through young college-age women and her designs proved very successful and were marketed through Chicago’s Marshall Field’s department store. By 1961 the Gernes Garment Co. moved their design and pattern making department to New York to capture young fashion designers such as Marian Ross as well as be closer to the influential couturier houses in New York & Paris. The Gay Gibson label was marketed in Mademoiselle Seventeen Glamour and Vogue magazines with Twiggy often modeling Gay Gibson dresses in the 1960’s. Marian’s designs were inventive playful and emphasizing movement as well as comfort. Many of the fashion patterns depict her models in flats ballet flats or even shoeless while dressed in elegant evening or formal dress. Also depicted are designs such as billowing harem pants modified and sleek upscale poodle skirts and Tartan patterned capes pockets dresses and accessories. Others encompass swimwear ski wear as well as the emphasized and often enforced domesticity of the late 1950’s to 1960’s with stylish plaid house-dresses in the kitchen and bar as well as frequent use of lace. The Gay Gibson label maintained a showroom at 1407 Broadway on the 39th Floor in New York ad held over 24 showings from 1961-1969 including Junior Dresses Summer Collections Spring Junior Collections as well as Holiday and Resort collections. By the early 1970’s the label was having financial difficulties and the popularity began to drop with the company run by Desaix Gernes her mother and husband Paul before folding a few years after Sara Desaix Gernes’ death. Marian and Elliot Mizelle established Madrigal Inc. name chosen because of the seductive chic of Manhattan’s Le Madrigal restaurant and grew into a legendary luxury boutique at one point operating store fronts in Santa Barbara downtown San Francisco and Carmel CA. In her 2015 interview for “Women in Business†with the Carmel Pine Cone Marian stated she “wanted to be an actress but it didn’t work out that way. I used to sketch a lot so I studied design instead. Everything I touched while was designing worked. I got a lot of jobs and was featured on a lot of Seventeen magazine covers.†This cataloguer could find not similar extant archive of original designs for the 1960’s period of the Gay Gibson label or for Marian Ross Mizelle; See: Interview with Desaix Gernes Garment Industry Oral History Collection The Kansas City Public Library Jan. 14 2005 SC229 Series 2 2024; Gay Gibson Vintage Fashion Guild 2025; Donnelly Garment Company vs. International Ladies Garment Workers Union et al Photographs Clothing Demonstration The Pendergast Years Kansas City in the Jazz Age & Great Depression 2025. ‎[FASHION DESIGN -- THEATRE].‎

‎A well-executed group of 12 original fashion designs of actresses for a theatrical production of an unnamed Civil War historical drama featuring several different costumes many preserving their fabric samples.‎

‎Pasadena CA: n.p. ca. 1960. Folio. 14.5 x 20 in. Twelve original gouache paintings on thick artist’s board 10 of them either w/ typed or manuscript labels 1 entitled “Garden Party†written in manuscript at upper fore-edge 8 preserving their cloth fabric swatch samples some w/ designer’s notes trimmings etc. All are preserved in a gray linen clamshell case minor edgewear rubbing wear to corners still a well-preserved fine set of paintings. This nicely executed set of fashion designs were apparently created for a Civil War theatre production in Southern California around 1960 with characters named Florence Bagshot Mrs. Ludley Bagshot Agatha Mrs. W.D.P.S. and Mrs. Forbes. The designs primarily focused on the women characters including one of a nurse standing in costume in gray striped dress apron and cap with Confederate cavalry trooper in kepi astride his horse and hatless officer with sash standing in the background. Many of the designs reflect the colour palate of the early 1960’s with avocado green vivid blues solid brown earth tones and bright nearly neon orange gauze fabrics in the renderings and samples which would not have been common in those combinations during the Civil War era. Still most of the dress designs incorporate the hoop skirts of the period often with crinoline and/or crinoline cage hoop skirts and high collars with ties and ribbons at the neck and trim patterns typical of the period. The design for Florence Bagshot’s bedroom wear incorporates elements of Mid 20th-Century design and sensibilities rather than the more common chemise and sturdy cotton for the 1860’s. The Confederate Nurse design was painted on “Brownie Board Cold Pressed Duncan Vail Co. Los Angeles†which appears in California art supply advertising from about 1960-1963. We were unable to identify the production after an extensive search through contemporary theatre production trade magazines newspapers and other industry publications. n.p., hardcover‎

Light wear and a few tiny tears to extremities shallow losses to right corners with a faint diagonal crease to upper left corner; unbacked Very Good. "With the Liberty Bell and subtitle "Made in USA" in parentheses this poster telegraphs the struggle for public legitimacy sought by the Communist Party U.S.A. at the end of the 1950s. The organizing committee was forced to host this hallmark radical memorial in New York's Washington Square instead of the preferred Union Square because they were denied a permit and were also refused use of loudspeakers because they might interfere with classes at nearby New York University. Though beautifully hand-lettered and illustrated by lifelong activist illustrator Hugo Gellert the simple two-color poster nonetheless remains locked in a design aesthetic little changed from the W.P.A. posters of the 1930s" Cushing Lincoln. ‎[JAPAN -- KIMONO DESIGN ARCHIVE].‎

‎A striking archive of hand-painted kimono designs from the design department of Marubeni Shoten Ltd. and also including their contracted design studios such as the Keimeikai Textile & Dyeing Studio and the Tanioka Shoten Design Department. These often large and extraordinary designs encompass a broad range of traditional Japanese motifs such as ornamental fans flowers landscapes sailing junks house crests and animals often with annotations revision notes as well as references to potential clients.‎

‎Kyoto Japan: Marubeni Shoten Design Dept. Keimeikai Textile & Dyeing Studio Tanioka Shoten Design Dept. ca. 1918-1945. Folio. 61 original hand-painted inked and pencil designs with a few on a lightly toned but quality semi-translucent paper the majority on thick paper stock and still others with two pieces carefully pasted together with contiguous designs sized from 9 x 15 in. up to 19.25 x 38.5 in. with 13 of the pieces larger the larger size a number of them sized 18 x 32 in. and many in the 14.25 x 15.5 in. size colour painted; the majority feature the design studio chop or crest at lower corners throughout many w/ annotations in margins several w/ change orders neatly annotated or even the title of the design and still many others w/ Roman numeric inventory codes in margins as well two still retaining original small silk samples many with creasing or minor tears & edgewear or creasing to fore-edges a few w/ small & large closed tears while others show some creasing and thumbing from continued use still an exceptional group of manuscripts. This superb archive of 61 original hand-painted kimono designs furnishes an exceptional visual array of Taisho- and early Showa-era Japanese motifs and styles. A number of the designs evoke traditional Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints with deep vivid colours and well rendered illustrations. Many of these designs incorporate floral patterns including Kiku Chrysanthemum Botan Mon Peony Pattern Manju Kiku Marigolds Japanese Irises Morning Glory Cockscomb Ivy Dahlias and many other botanical motifs. In addition there are many illustrating ornately embroidered designs austere bamboo mushrooms and intriguing landscapes some with a small portion fully painted in with brilliant colouring while the outline of the kimono fills out the drawing. Two of the designs still features their original small attached silk kimono sample more reminiscent of Western Design houses which often attached their chosen fabric samples to their clothing designs. A few of the designs are executed on translucent thin paper for the kimono draper to transfer the design to white silk or other fabrics via some type of carbon paper process. Another of the designs has been executed on a stunning silver metallic paper with palm or bamboo leaf fronds executed in vivid blues & browns. Some feature a nearly surrealist quality while several others include illustrations of doves or chickens. Two of the designs incorporate Art Deco representations of Chinese Junks and Japanese sailing vessels typical of the 1930’s prior to World War II. In the Taisho Era a new era opened for textile designers working with Kyoto drapers and department stores with many having trained at new art colleges and then working in the design studios of Marubeni Keimeikai Textile & Dyeing Studio and others. The Tachiki Artist design studio designs on thin translucent paper include one with designer stamp of character embedded within a skull. Some appear to have two different date stamps for the Marubeni Shoten Design and some are unsigned or stamped. The Taisho- and Showa-era kimonos featured brighter colours more groundbreaking designs as Japan’s designers embraced traditional dress and transformed it into a new garment equally appealing to the “Moga†or brazen “Modern Girl.†The designer notes include instructions to “leave a little more space between the fans;†“Drop the little fan crest;†“too much white bush clover†on the pine cones and even that Matsuo Taishichi had ordered a design for “clothes for paying a visit for a young person.†The Marubeni Shoten originated with Chubei Itho who began in 1858 as a salesman for linen cloth and by 1872 had opened his drapery store Benchu in Senba Osaka. By 1918 Chubei Itoh had expanded the business into Osaka and deciced to merge with Itochu Shoten Ltd. becoming Marubeni Shoten with their own drapers shops and many contracts with department stores. Later by the mid-1950s Marubeni merged with the company that operated the Takashimaya Dept. Store Chain all the while preserving their design studio and artists. Bound in red cloth with gilt lettering, in illustrated dustjacket, housed in blue boards and faux leather, inserted into case made of boards with printed wraps. “The Ketuba: Jewish marriage contracts through the ages. ” Written by David Davidovitch, with a foreword by Cecil Roth, and designed by Avigail and Itshak Yoresh. This exceedingly detailed volume both outlines the community and rabbinic history and practice of the Ketuba, with 18 facsimile full page color illustrated pastedown reproductions, as well as dozens more black and white illustrations, also showing other facets of marriage rites, including contemporary photographs and illuminated manuscripts depicting the elaborate weddings of Yemenite Jews. The Ketubbah; “a document recording the financial obligations which the husband undertakes toward his wife in respect of, and consequent to, their marriage, obligations which in principle are imposed on him by law. … Most Jewish communities have followed the custom of decorating the ketubbah. An Ashkenazi ketubbah from Krems. Austria, dated 1392, shows that illumination was usual among Ashkenazi communities during the Middle Ages. However, the best-known illuminated ketubbot, which date from the 16th century onward, were from Italy, certain Sephardi communities, and from Near and Far Eastern Jewry. Richly illuminated ketubbot, which date from the 17th and 18th centuries, are from Italy, Corfu, the Balkans, and Gibraltar. They are written on parchment and the text is usually bordered by an illuminated frame, depicting a variety of decorative themes in many bright colors. The frame, which is sometimes divided into a diptych, is often illustrated with biblical or mythological motifs, portraits of the bride and groom in contemporary costume, family coats of arms, symbols representing conjugal bliss, and even nude figures. Typical Jewish symbols were used, such as the hands forming the priestly blessing, a sign that the groom was from a family of kohanim, or a ewer and basin indicating a levite. Sometimes, the biblical figures represented in the ketubbah symbolize the bride or groom's name; thus a scene from the life of Joseph might mean that the groom's name was Joseph, a scene from the Book of Ruth that the bride's name was Ruth. Dutch Sephardi ketubbot of the same period are distinguished by their delicate ornamental engraving. They were mainly executed on parchment and are in the best Dutch copper-engraving tradition. An outstanding example is a 1658 Rotterdam ketubbah, executed by Shalom Italia, a copper engraver from Mantua who emigrated to Holland. This ketubbah is rich in biblical motifs. Another famous copperengraved ketubbah, dating from the late 17th century, is decorated with flowers and allegorical figures in the typical Dutch-Jewish contemporary manner. The border contains the date 1693, commemorating the year of the death of the renowned Amsterdam rabbi, Isaac Aboab de Fonseca. ” (EJ 2008) Subjects: Jewish illumination of books and manuscripts. Ketubah in art. Outer case torn at edge, otherwise fine. Very good condition. (ART-18-37A)xx‎

‎[KIMONO DESIGN - MANUSCRIPT]‎

‎An Album of Designs‎

‎KIMONO DESIGN - MANUSCRIPT. 10 1/2" x 14 1/2" oblong design book bound in single backed sheets on the short side with string not fukuro-toji. With a brushed title label sealed throughout but otherwise anonymous. As often happens with manuscripts the name of the shop which used it as a pattern book has been excised. There are 25 black and white design sketches for elaborate kimono. More of a Kano rather than a Rimpa style. The album probably dates from the first half of the 19th Century. A lovely item which suffers from very bad worming throughout. Though the damage is worse at the extremities of the work holes are shot through the paper and effect the design images as well. Sold with all faults. unknown‎
