‎Hardcover, Folio, 351 pages, illustrated, 31 cm. Large compendium detailing Jewish history through art, ritual objects, and cultural monuments. Profusely illustrated, some in color. Written by Dr. Geoffrey Wigoder (1922 - 1999), a historian and philosopher, was born in Leeds, Great Britain. He was educated at the Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, and at Oxford University in England where he earned his degrees in Jewish medieval history, and at Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. In 1949 he immigrated to the newly founded State of Israel where he was active as a journalist for various newspapers and radio stations, most recently serving as the founding editor of the Dialogues newsletter that focuses on discussion between Jews, Christians, and Muslims. He collaborated with Cecil Roth on the New Standard Jewish Encyclopaedia and started to work together on the 16-volume Encyclopaedia Judaica. After Cecil Roth passed away in 1970, Wigoder became its editor directing a team of some 1,800 contributors from all over the world. His other publications include The Encyclopaedia of the Jewish Religion, Jewish Art and Civilization, The Story of the Synagogue, and a 1994 edition of the Encyclopaedia Judaica. He also edited an English concordance of the Bible and the Oxford Dictionary of Judaism. Wigoder taught and directed the first oral history department at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, lectured on Contemporary Judaism at the University of Manchester in England, and founded and ran the Steven Spielberg Film Center at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Bound in red cloth with gilt lettering, in illustrated dustjacket, housed in red boards, inserted into case made of boards with printed wraps. “The Ketuba: Jewish marriage contracts through the ages. ” Written by David Davidovitch, with a foreword by Cecil Roth, and designed by Avigail and Itshak Yoresh. This exceedingly detailed volume both outlines the community and rabbinic history and practice of the Ketuba, with 18 facsimile full page color illustrated pastedown reproductions, as well as dozens more black and white illustrations, also showing other facets of marriage rites, including contemporary photographs and illuminated manuscripts depicting the elaborate weddings of Yemenite Jews. The Ketubbah; “a document recording the financial obligations which the husband undertakes toward his wife in respect of, and consequent to, their marriage, obligations which in principle are imposed on him by law. … Most Jewish communities have followed the custom of decorating the ketubbah. An Ashkenazi ketubbah from Krems. Austria, dated 1392, shows that illumination was usual among Ashkenazi communities during the Middle Ages. However, the best-known illuminated ketubbot, which date from the 16th century onward, were from Italy, certain Sephardi communities, and from Near and Far Eastern Jewry. Richly illuminated ketubbot, which date from the 17th and 18th centuries, are from Italy, Corfu, the Balkans, and Gibraltar. They are written on parchment and the text is usually bordered by an illuminated frame, depicting a variety of decorative themes in many bright colors. The frame, which is sometimes divided into a diptych, is often illustrated with biblical or mythological motifs, portraits of the bride and groom in contemporary costume, family coats of arms, symbols representing conjugal bliss, and even nude figures. Typical Jewish symbols were used, such as the hands forming the priestly blessing, a sign that the groom was from a family of kohanim, or a ewer and basin indicating a levite. Sometimes, the biblical figures represented in the ketubbah symbolize the bride or groom's name; thus a scene from the life of Joseph might mean that the groom's name was Joseph, a scene from the Book of Ruth that the bride's name was Ruth. Dutch Sephardi ketubbot of the same period are distinguished by their delicate ornamental engraving. They were mainly executed on parchment and are in the best Dutch copper-engraving tradition. An outstanding example is a 1658 Rotterdam ketubbah, executed by Shalom Italia, a copper engraver from Mantua who emigrated to Holland. This ketubbah is rich in biblical motifs. Another famous copperengraved ketubbah, dating from the late 17th century, is decorated with flowers and allegorical figures in the typical Dutch-Jewish contemporary manner. Richard David Barnett (1909–1986) , “like his father, made his career at the British Museum. Born in London, he began in 1932 as assistant keeper in the department of Egyptian and Assyrian antiquities and in 1955 was appointed head of the newly established department of Western Asiatic antiquities. From 1933 to 1935 he was secretary of the British School in Athens. Richard Barnett's research extended to Assyriology, the cultures of Syria, Phoenicia, and Asia Minor as well as biblical archaeology. In 1956 he organized the special exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London commemorating the tercentenary of the resettlement of Jews in the British Isles, and his catalog of the exhibition was one of his most distinguished publications. He was president of the Jewish Historical Society of England (1959–61) and contributed several important papers on the history of the Sephardim in England to its transactions. His publications include: Carchemish: Report on the Excavations at Djerabis (vol. 3 (with Sir L. Born in Russia, he immigrated to New York in 1905 at the time of pogroms in Russia. After attending the Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design, in 1914 he studied with Jean-Antoine Injalbert at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Supporting himself as a machinist in the 1920s, Goodelman became a communist. His concerns about social and economic conditions were expressed in his art. He participated in exhibitions at the John Reed Club in the early 1930s. After World War II, Goodelman created artworks related to the Holocaust. [and] Did illustrations for *Der kibitser* and stage and costume design for productions by Maurice Schwartz in the Yiddish Art Theater. Contributed articles to Der kundes (N. Y. ) , Jewish Daily Forward (N. Y. ) , Di tsayt (N. Y. ) , Kinderland (N. Y. ) , Kinder zshurnal (N. Y. ) , Frayhayt (N. Y. ) . [He was the] Illustrator of a number of books. In 1925, together with Yosel Cutler, [he] founded the ‘Modicot’ marionette theater. [He] Wrote plays, children's stories and poems” (YIVO, 2018) . Author Yitzchak Rayz (1885-1943) , “better known by his pen name Moyshe Nadir was an American Yiddish language writer and satirist…. In 1898, at the age of 13, Rayz immigrated to New York and adopted the Americanized name Isaac Reiss. Within a few years his work was published widely in the New York Yiddish press, under a variety of pseudonyms, including Rinnalde Rinaldine, Dilensee Mirkarosh, Der Royzenkavalir, Doctor Hotzikl, and, finally, Moishe Nadir. The name ‘Nadir’ is a Yiddish expression meaning ‘here you are’ or ‘that's for you, ’ but can also mean ‘take this and choke on it. ’ As a teenager, he wrote for Der Groyser Kundes (The Big Prankster) and later co-edited Der Yiddisher Gazlon (The Yiddish Bandit) with Jacob Adler. He wrote for an assortment of Communist Yiddish publications including the Frayhayt (Freedom) newspaper and its successor Morgn Frayhayt (Morning Freedom) and the magazines Der Signal (The Signal) and Der Hammer (The Hammer) . When his sharp-tongued theater reviews caused him to be banned from theatrical productions, he resorted to attending plays in disguise. His own plays were performed by Maurice Schwartz’s Yiddish Art Theater, Zuni Maude and Yosl Cutlers Modicut puppet theater, Artef (Arbeter Teater Faraband, Workers Theater Alliance) and the Federal Theater Project. Among his better known poems are the erotic Vilde Royzen (Wild Roses, 1915) and his 1932 Rivington Strit (Rivington Street) . After a long association with the Frayhayt and the Morgn Frayhayt, Rayz began to distance himself from the Communist cause with the onset of the show trials in the Soviet Union and publicly broke with the Morgn Frayhayt in the wake of the Molotiv-Ribbentrop Pact. He set out his reasons in ‘Di, vos blayben mit der Morgn Frayhayt’ (‘Those who stay with the Morgn Frayhayt’) in response to Morgn Frayhayt editor Moissaye Olgin’s ‘Di vos gayen avek’ (‘Those who leave’) . Rayz discusses his relationship to the Communist Party in his posthumous ‘Moyde Ani’ (Wikipedia, 2019) . " Hermann Struck (1876-1944) was a famous German Jewish artist whose students included Marc Chagall, Lesser Ury, Jacob Steinhardt, and more. He was commissioned to make portraits of Herzl, Einstein, Frued, Neitzsche, Oscar Wilde and others. In Yiddish. “Yosl Kotler was a master of the stylized grotesque. He was also an extraordinarily accomplished draftsman, able to stretch, shrink and contort a line into an endless kaleidoscope of forms. Kotler is one of the great American artists of modern times, but has never achieved recognition as such. Perhaps because he worked almost exclusively in the Yiddish-speaking milieu, and mainly among Communist circles. Or because he spread his abundant talents in so many directions, including painting, illustration, cartoons, theater design, poetry, fiction, and puppetry. Kotler was fifteen and an orphan when he arrived in America in 1911. He thrived primarily as an illustrator and puppeteer, teaming up with Zuny Maud, an equally multi-talented fellow Bohemian, to create a cult puppet theater in 1925. Kotler was driving to Hollywood hoping to make a puppet movie when he died in a car crash in 1935. His funeral brought 10, 000 people onto the streets of New York. Author Herman Gold was another extraordinary Lower East Side character, described by memoirist Reuben Iceland as "the weaver of the weirdest, wildest word plays.
