Plauen: Christian Stoll 1915. Vibrant Art Deco ornamental design Plate 1 from Volume XV of Kunstgewerbliche Schmuckformen für die Fläche. The geometric shapes and vivid colors were elements of a new style of ornamentation that found expression in architecture and the applied arts. An exemplary Art Deco design from a major pattern book. Single pochoir plate of a geometric airbrush design measuring 9.5 x 7.25 inches. Tipped to black paper mount with publisher's label mounted to upper right corner. Archivally matted to 14 x 11 inches. Mayakovsky, Vladimir (editor) and Aleksandr Rodchenko (design)
Novyi LEF New LEF no. 2 1928
Moscow: Gosizdat 1928. Octavo 22.3 × 15.2 cm. Original staple-stitched photo-illustrated wrappers by Aleksandr Rodchenko; 47 1 pp. With two leaves of plates featuring for example photographs and pictures of stage designs by A. Rodchenko to recto and verso on somewhat thicker paper stock. Wrappers somewhat dust-soiled and with traces of use; front cover nearly loosened; few leaves with small annotations; back cover with contemporary Soviet bookstore stamp; else very good. A single issue of this leading avant-garde journal of the eponymous artistic group Levyi front iskusstva Left front of the arts: LEF edited by the futurist poet and artist Vladimir Mayakovsky. Published monthly 1927-1928 twenty-four issues of the journal appeared in total. The original LEF published 1923-1925 introduced Constructivist design and formulated "productivism" as a movement in the arts. The editorial team also understood art as playing a central role in the class struggle. By 1925 just seven issues of the central organ of the Russian avant-garde had appeared. Due to massive criticism of its apparent incomprehensibility to the masses the journal was discontinued. Two years later the series continued under the name Novyi LEF New LEF for two more years with the final year appearing under the direction of Sergei Tretiakov. From the beginning Aleksandr Rodchenko was responsible for the cover design having won a cover design contest in 1923. See John Bowlt and Béatrice Hernad Aus vollem Halse Munich 1993 p. 135f. The 1927-1928 issues focused on Factography or "photography of fact" with a special interest in left-leaning cinema. The new publication positioned itself against the "poor taste" and "lack of class-consciousness" of art of the NEP period. Aware of the upcoming drive toward industrialization the editorial team understood the "twinning of art with production a necessary factor in the industrialization of the country." Novyi LEF featured Rodchenko's photographic experiments which were highly controversial at the time characterized by extreme perspectives dynamic oblique views and spatial superimpositions that significantly influenced the photography of the New Vision see Claudia Gabrielle Philipp in: Kat. MKG Hamburg 2001 p. 205ff.<br /> <br /> Scarce in the trade. One of 3.000 copies printed. <br /> <br /> Cat. MoMa Rowell/Wye 715; Cat. MoMA Rodchenko 210. unknown

CZECH SURREALISM AND PSYCHOANALYSIS Jazyková komika: estetická studie Linguistic humor: an aesthetic study
Prague: Václav Petr 1941. Octavo 24 × 16 cm. Original decorative card wrappers with the publisher's original printed wrap-around band; 120 2 pp. Very good. Wrappers by the painter Karel Černý. First edition of this work by Czech psychoanalyst philosopher art theoretician and writer Bohuslav Brouk one of the first promoters of Freud's work in Czechoslovakia. He was a close friend of Karel Teige and a co-founder of the Czech Surrealist Group in 1934. Considered one of the most original minds of the Czech avant-garde he was also seen as its enfant terrible. Brouk's postscript for Štyrský's "Emily Comes to Me in a Dream" 1933 a defense of erotic literature revealed his great interest in sexual freedom individual creativity and modern artistic tendencies. His research in the early 1930s focused on topics such as masturbation sexology and fetishes and his works were often censored. With a trenchant wit and rhetorical talent he set out to destroy what he saw as everyday myths that make a meaningless existence bearable: ethics work sport and marriage among others. After the war he was an outstanding public critic of communist ideology and fled the country after the 1948 coup. unknown

With support from the minister of education Anatoly Lunacharsky and theoretical guidance by Aleksandr Bogdanov who believed that only art made by the proletariat can reflect most accurately the reality of the proletariat "by 1918 it had expanded into a national movement with a much more ambitious purpose: to define a unique proletarian culture that would inform and inspire the new society" Lynn Mally. Culture of the Future: The Proletkult Movement in Revolutionary Russia 1990; pp. xviii.<br /> <br /> This volume opens with a tribute to F. I. Kalinin 1882-1920 a Russian revolutionary and literary critic who had served as chairman of Proletkult prior to his untimely death. It contains poetry and prose by young proletarian writers some of which signed other texts under pseudonyms. While many of them praise the virtues of hard work industrialization and the revolutionary struggle others are more lyrical in tone. Among the authors are K. Prokof'ev Aleksandr Zirikh Nina Smirnova D. Maslennikov I. Toom A. Belov Ivan Kuznetsov P. Teplova A. Vinokurov S. Zas'ko A. Strokova A. Miadzelets and A. Masterkov. With seven leaves of plates featuring reproductions of works signed Balakirev Rall' Brusnikin three works Leimik and Pimenov. The wrapper design is credited to one M. Vasil'ev a student of the "IZO" art workshop in Saratov. A section of "Proletsmekh" includes satirical texts. A final section on the chronology of the Proletkult movement contains historical notes as well as proceedings from the second Saratov Gubernia conference of Proletkult groups with detailed reports on arts and literary activities in the region as well as the preparations for the present publication noted to have been printed in only 700 copies.<br /> <br /> Not in Getty.<br /> <br /> As of January 2024 KVK OCLC show a single holding of the first volume at Stanford. unknown

Light soil to wrappers; chip to lower corner of front wrapper and last pages; still good or better. With attractive photomontage wrappers designed by the graphic artist Paul Urban this German language publication for Soviet youth focused on the promotion of world revolution reflecting the Soviet foreign policy of its day. Written in simple German the magazine was intended for students with at least two years of German instruction. A call to political agitation at the head of the glossary reads: "Comrades students and teachers of the German language - You have already read the first two issues of our journal. The task before you is to use what you have gleaned from the journal for your practical work. Strengthen the international education! Connect with the German workers at your factory collective and state farm in order to share your experience and learn from theirs. 10000 German workers and specialists are currently working in the Soviet Union. It is up to you to agitate among these comrades who came to help us in our Socialist building." The book was published to celebrate the five-hundredth anniversary of the appearance of the first printed book in Bohemia in 1468 The Trojan Chronicles. From the English-language resume: "the great seventeenth-century Czech humanist Jan Amos Komenský . had faith in the grandiose possibilities open to the printed word that can spread life-giving ideas. And finally it is to the second half of the twentieth century that the book owes its graphic design. This is the work of two contemporary Czech artists who have many times already shown themselves to be outstanding masters of book design and illustration -- the graphic designer and typographer Oldřich Hlavsa and the painter graphic artist and illustator Zdeněk Sklenář. It is no coincidence that this bibliophile publication is designed and illustrated in a way that enables the artistic aspects of its typography to create new meanings." SOVIET VISUAL CULTURE AND POSTER ART Obzor iskusstv: izo teatr muzyka An overview of the arts: visual arts theater music. Wrapper title: kritika i bibliografiia critical reviews and bibliography. Nos. 4 6 8 9 10 11 1935
Moscow: Izdatel'stvo Kritiko-bibliograficheskogo instituta 1935. Octavos 24.5 × 17 cm. Original decorative staple-stitched self-wrappers; 40 pp. per issue. Illustrations throughout. Very good. Six issues of this monthly journal dedicated to Soviet visual culture published 1932-1936 with wrapper design by the master graphic artist Vladimir Favorsky. Illustrated with reproductions of contemporary propaganda posters and paintings with accompanying reviews the issues offer a glimpse into the editorial criteria for Soviet poster art and Socialist Realist painting in the early years of their development. Each issue opens with reviews of political posters by artists such as Gustav Klutsis whose work is discussed as departing from Socialist Realism agitational posters of Galina Shubina who is critiqued for making "too masculine" the faces of female workers and anti-religious posters by Daniil Moor whose caricatures are said to be popular with workers during collective review sessions. Reviews of art exhibitions art publications theater performances as well as publications on musical performances and the opera close each volume. Art exhibition reviews include critiques of the exhibition "Soviet Turkmenia" "Spring exhibition of Moscow painters" and the individual show of the avant-garde painter Alexandr Labas an OST member and VKhUTEMAS teacher whose work would not be exhibited after 1936. The periodical appeared under different titles in 1932-1936 including "Fine art production" "Overview of the Arts" and "Poster Art and Reproductions."<br /> <br /> The journal was published by the Critical Bibliographic Institute established by Narkompros in 1930. The objective of the Institute was to provide critical reviews and bibliographies of all print matter published in the Soviet Union with the goal of improving the general quality of the publications. At its inception in addition to visual culture the institute published ten other industry bulletins: "Social and political literature" "Technical literature" "Children's literature" etc. Due to the broad scope of the publications the quality of the reviews began to suffer and by 1936 the publications were transferred to respective specialized institutes staffed with appropriate experts. Publishers catalog to rear wrappers. One of 1800 copies printed. A striking clearly under-studied research source on early Soviet visual culture. <br /> <br /> As of February 2026 KVK OCLC only show two holdings in North America with scattered issues at one additional institution. unknown
