Hanging Loose 2
Brooklyn: Hanging Loose 1967. Second number of this long-running little magazine devoted to emerging and underrepresented writers founded in 1966 at the Brooklyn apartment of poet and contributing editor Denise Levertov who had taught Jarrett and Laurie. Simultaneously democratic and ephemeral its original format a sheaf of loose mimeographed sheets tucked in a mailing envelope inspired its name: "If you liked a poem you could pin it to the wall. If you didn't like a poem you could use it as a napkin." This number features poems by Marge Piercy and a story by Elia Katz among others. The envelope illustrated by Mimi Gross is addressed to Indiana writer and early subscriber Roger Pfingston. Over the following decades Hanging Loose would publish new writing by Dorothy Allison Ha Jin Wayne Koestenbaum Audre Lorde Eileen Myles and a teenage Emma Straub and publish the first books of Sherman Alexie Eula Biss Kimiko Hahn and Maggie Nelson under its Hanging Loose Press imprint. An early and complete issue scarce in commerce of this landmark Brooklyn poetry 'zine. Forty-four mimeographed typed pages measuring 9 x 6 inches. Loose as issued in original pictorial mailing envelope with address label; index card inscribed "compliments of the editors" initialed by Dick Lourie laid in. Light shelfwear. Hanging Loose unknown

Tucholsky, Kurt; John Heartfield (design)
Deutschland Deutschland über alles. Ein Bilderbuch von Kurt Tucholsky und vielen Fotografen. Montiert von John Heartfield
Berlin: Neuer Deutscher Verlag 1929. First edition 1.-20. Tausend. Hardcover. Very good condition. Small Quarto. 231 5pp. Original boards with embossed photomontage by John Heartfield on front and back cover; protected by modern mylar. Tan endpapers. The book was designed by John Heartfield.

"Deutschland Deutschland Über Alles" by German-Jewish writer Kurt Tucholsky 1890-1935 is a work of fierce social criticism of the late 1920's Germany. Tucholsky also a journalist and satirist warned against antidemocratic tendencies and the threat of National Socialism. This is apparent in his choice of Heartfield's anti-Hitler photomontage on the cover of this work. His books were banned blacklisted by the Nazi's as "Entartete Kunst" and burned. Tucholsky also wrote under the pseudonym Kaspar Hauser. Profusely illustrated with b/w reproductions of photographs by Tucholsky W. Nettelbeck Robert Sennecke Hans Schroeder Otto Storch Otto Haeckel R. Horlemann and many others.

Text in German. Light wear along edges of binding and two small light stains on front cover. Ever so lightly starting at half-title. Block very lightly age-toned not affecting photographs. Steptoe, John (art); Grandits, John (design)
Families Reading Together
The Children's Book Council 1989. Color poster depicting a grandmother sharing a book with her grandson created by John Steptoe. In 1989 the Children's Book Council commissioned four posters on the theme of "Families Reading Together" from children's illustrators Steptoe Donald Carrick Peter Sis and David Wiesner. Proceeds from their sale supported literacy and reading programs around the world. Raised in Brooklyn Steptoe was a pioneering illustrator of sixteen children's books twelve of which he wrote. He centered African-American children in his work beginning with Stevie 1969 which was published in Life magazine and then by Harper & Row when he was still a teenager; Stevie would be memorably read aloud by Gordon on Sesame Street. Steptoe received Caldecott Honors twice for The Story of Jumping Mouse 1985 and Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters 1988. This poster was among the last of his works to be published before his untimely death from AIDS at the age of thirty-eight. After his death the American Library Association established the John Steptoe New Talent Award in his honor. A fine example of a scarce poster. Color poster measuring 19 x 13 inches. [DESIGN]
Hand-painted embroidery design depicting a parrot a snail and a lizard
France nineteenth century. Large fragment of an original embroidery design likely for a shawl or tablecloth executed in red watercolor. The stylized parrot snail and lizard are meticulously plotted out by hand stitch by stitch against a background of oak leaves and acorns. This design is plotted on "papier quadrillé" manufactured by the Paris publisher Chavant & Dessaigne. Fleury Chavant was an industrial designer who issued a number of influential pattern books in the 1830s and 1840s. In addition to finished patterns his company offered a range of these printed grid papers with gauges corresponding to every kind of needlework enabling those at home to produce their own designs. A striking survival. Original watercolor executed on two sheets of printed "papier quadrillé" joined together entire piece measuring 15 x 32 inches. Publisher information printed at base of sheets: "8 en 10: à Paris chez CHAVANT & DESSAIGNE Rue Cléry No 19 / No. 23." Several pale pink areas where paint spread; trace of glue along seam; later pencil notes to verso. unknown

[DESIGN]
Sheet of six Épinal prints domestic and religious subjects
France: no publisher no date early twentieth century. Striking hand-colored sheet of six "images d'Épinal." Inexpensive broadsides like these were hugely popular in France in the nineteenth century: naïve woodcuts brightly colored featuring images of Catholic saints Napoleonic battles and storybook characters. By the turn of the twentieth century lithography had emerged as the primary printing process and the range of subjects had greatly expanded but there was still a market for images printed in the old style a graphic tradition that influenced modernists from Henri Rousseau to Alfred Jarry. This group of six separate images printed from blocks on a sheet of Ingres d'Arches paper may be a publisher's proof. The domestic and religious subjects include a young woman reaching for a flower the devotional image of Christ in the winepress and an angel watching over the city gates. A fine example. Single sheet of six woodblock prints printed recto only and colored en pochoir measuring 14.75 x 19 inches. no publisher unknown
