Included in this collection are Yeats Joyce Shaw Beckett Synge and others. The text is handsomely printed in green and brown using Centaur and Arrighi types. While's clever take on Morison's text sets the title and a short description over a fragmented manuscript design all painted with the fragments shaded in blue fuschia orange yellow and gilt. The design is repeated on the rear cover except mirrored as though the viewer were reading it from underneath. The gaps in the manuscript are filled in on the gold-flecked endpapers where conversely the fragments are left blank. Endbands in blue orange and black thread. Spine title likewise hand-painted in black. Scant edgewear else fine. Housed in clamshell box. A.e.g. Garth While learned bookbinding under H. A. De Coverley at Morley College and under Shirley England at Bolt Court. He studied calligraphy with Dorothy Mahoney a student of Edward Johnston at the Stanhope Institute. While won a number of bookbinding competitions throughout the early 1980s all in the field of vellum binding and his lauded craftsmanship is on display here in this volume's tight finishes. London: Soncino Press 1930. Rutherston Albert. Small quarto. xl 3 209pp. One of nine copies printed on Roman Vellum signed by the editor Cecil Roth and the illustrator Albert Rutherston. With fourteen full-page stencilled illustrations plus seventy small ornaments all in color. Rutherston's bright depictions of the Passover story including illustrations of the Jews under Pharaoh the parting of the Red Sea the Ten Commandments and the prophets looking over modern children at play bring both joy and gravity to the sacred text. Rutherston collaborated with the Curwen Press repeatedly over his career and this is perhaps one of his most accomplished works possibly influenced by his years in Palestine while serving in the British Army. Set in Roman and Italic English type as well as Hebrew type purchased from Enschedé en Zonen in Holland the edition embraces the tradition of the pictorial Haggadah while imbuing it with modernity. A Western title page appears at the front of the volume when opened left to right followed by a publisher's note and an Introduction by Roth describing the historic and spiritual place of the Haggadah. The rest of the volume reads right to left with Hebrew at the right hand and English translation and glosses at the left. The result is an inviting impressive edition beautiful to the layperson and the intitiated. Bound in full green morocco by Henry T. Wood Ltd. a progressive London firm whose exceptional giltwork is on display here in the tooled depiction of candles and the Torah at the Western lower cover ruling to inner and outer edges and spine bands and spine titles in Hebrew and English. Metal clasps. Some soiling to exterior inconsequential stain to lower corner of text block else fine. A remarkable production. Bookplate of Anne and Robert H. Ten linocut illustrations whose harsh blacks and whites evoke the horrors of the concentration camps too unimaginable to comprehend beyond the abstract. Feldman himself was a prisoner in the Sachsenhausen camp later becoming an art professor at Brown University. The illustrations add visual depth to the psychological force of the camp songs here translated for the first time into English. Originally written and composed in Polish the lyrics recount the daily traumas experienced by the prisoners from the humiliating victory of a second helping of food to the cruelty of the gas chamber. Bound in the style of Nazi account ledgers with vintage 1939 covers of bolted gray cloth painted with black stripes reflecting prison garb and leather pieces. Printed in Chaucer type with chapter titles and marginal notes in red. Each of the six parts begins with a wide border and a fourteen-line initial block containing the entire first word. This was the last book Morris worked on before he died. The colophon states: "The borders and ornaments were designed entirely by William Morris except the initial words Whilom & Empty which were completed from his unfinished designs." Sidney Cockerell wrote that Morris in his last illness "sat up and was going to design 'Empty' for The Water Of the Wondrous Isles but only just managed to black in the spaces and just rough in the word." Letter from T. J. Cobden Sanderson to George Millard
London 1919. Single 9 1/4 by 6 1/2 inch sheet. Dated September 8 1919. Cobden-Sanderson directs Millard on his desired bindings for three copies of the Doves Bible one in blue and two in red. For two the blue and one of the reds Cobden-Sanderson provides one of his patterns which he states he has enclosed as a rubbing. The pattern in question is possibly the one reflected on Tidcombe's DB820 an adaptation of patterns on the 1907 The English Liturgy DB673 and Sartor Resartus DB690. On the other red he asks that Millard move forward with a design of "mirrored ovals and circles which he chose by himself". He also suggests including the initials of Mr. Lloyd a customer on the blue binding but defers to Millard's opinion. In addition to having commissioned two houses from Frank Lloyd Wright -- one in Chicago the other in Pasadena -- George and Alice Millard were prominent booksellers in the early twentieth century. 1993. Gorey Edward. Watercolor and ink on paper measuring 7 by 6 inches. Matted and framed. This illustration appeared on page 21 of the July 19 1993 issue of Sports Illustrated. The image served as the lead-in to the "Anniversary" section and it depicts an obscure baseball moment from 1893 when former player manager Harry Wright suggested that umpires keep the ball-strike count secret until the at-bat was concluded. While this would have undoubtedly added an element of mystery to the game wiser heads prevailed baseball continued unchanged and Wright whose 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings went undefeated was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1953. An uncommon sports-related commission by Gorey whose pitcher almost seems en pointe in his delivery. Together with a copy of the printed magazine. unknown

These volumes contain a collection of essays edited by Paul A. Bennett contributed by Dorothy Abbe Mabel Dwiggins Rudolph Ruzicka and others with a selective checklist compiled by Dorothy Abbe and Rollo Silver. Illustrated with black and white photographs of Dwiggins and color reproductions of a cross-section of his graphic arts work. Bound in paper-covered boards decorated with a design comprised of typographic ornaments by Dwiggins backed in blue cloth and gilt-titled to spines. Large quarto. 162pp. Published in an edition of 150 copies of which 45 were specially bound and contained an extra suite of plates signed by the artist Michael McCurdy. This is one of thirty Roman-numeral copies bound in brushed cowhide. The twelve wood engravings McCurdy created for this edition were inspired by following Muir's travels on foot in the Sierra Nevada in 1869. During this time Muir was in the midst of a Thoreauvian living experiment inhabiting a cabin along Yosemite Creek. The grandeur that infuses Muir's text is ably captured by McCurdy whose style here is reminiscent of Paul Landacre's California Hills. Bound in full brushed cowhide and housed in the publisher's yellow pine box with cowhide label on upper cover accompanied by the extra suite of plates in a handmade paper chemise. Very fine.
