The Lulu Plays
San Francisco: Arion Press 2015. Kentridge William. Quarto. 169pp. One of 400 copies signed by the illustrator. The sixty-seven images created by William Kentridge depict figures created by brush and ink over dictionary pages which could then be spread over a stage scene or rearranged to suggest new positions or gestures. Some of the images use historical figures to represent certain characters such as Gustav Mahler as the Count Casti-Piani and Sigmund Freud as the Stage Manager. The sinister occasionally voyeuristic imagery underscores the text's tragic violence and its characters' desperation and grotesqueness. To imbue the work with further foreboding the endpapers and slipcase evoke spatterings of blood. Bound in gray cloth over boards. Both book and slipcase fine.
