BRYHER; BACON, Paul (DJ design)
Colours of Vaud
New York: A Helen and Kurt Wolff Book/ Harcourt Brace & World Inc 1969. Quarter cloth paper boards. Very Good. FIRST US EDITION SIGNED BY AUTHOR with TLS & hand-written postcard. 8vo. Quarter green cloth spine lettered and decorated in black and green grey boards with black-stamped decoration to upper board. Green top edge mostly faded. Pushing to spine ends bands of sunning to board edges dint to bottom edge. Signed by Bryher to ffep with "Best wishes from" else clean and tight. Two-page folded TLS and hand-written postcard featuring puffins laid in. In Paul Bacon's original illustrated dust jacket: spine gently darkened gently toned and soiled edges creased closed tear to rear panel. Still a lovely tight copy of Bryher's final novel. Unusual especially signed and with a TLS and hand-written postcard. Seemingly Mr J H Fall's copy the addressee of both the TLS and postcard. On Villa Kenwin-headed paper and written shortly after its publication Bryher discusses her novel advising Fall that "You never need feel you have to like the book." The letter also covered her liking of Akenside the change in approach to the T.L.S. and that she'd take In Aleppo Once "if it seems at all interesting". Dated three years later the postcard briefly outlines the novelist's travel plans: from a "wonderful week in the Scillies" she returned to London and then on to Kenwin: even in her seventies the novelist continued to travel. Bryher had deep emotional ties to both Switzerland the location of her Bauhaus-style home Villa Kenwin and the Isles of Scilly where she owned a daffodil farm and from which she had borrowed her adopted name. Perhaps indicating a note of formality both documents are signed "Winifred Bryher". Bryher and H.D. had long used Bumpus for sourcing books: perhaps Fall was a bookseller A Helen and Kurt Wolff Book/ Harcourt, Brace & World, Inc hardcover

William Shakespeare, with a Preface by Robert Graves, illustrations by Clarke Hutton, and book design by Edward Burrett
The Sonnets a presentation copy of the finely bound illustrated limited and numbered edition signed by the poet Robert Graves the illustrator Clarke Hutton and the book designer Edward Burrett accompanied by the original publisher's prospectus and order form and with a lengthy gift inscription from Edward Burrett and his wife
London: The Swallow Press 1975. Full leather. This is an exquisite finely bound strikingly unconventionally illustrated edition of The Sonnets by poet playwright dramatist and primus inter pares William Shakespeare. 300 copies were produced thus of which this is number 44 signed on the colophon by Robert Graves who contributes a substantive Preface Edward Burrett the book designer and Clarke Hutton the illustrator. A troika of features distinguish this copy. First is exceptional condition. Second this copy is accompanied by the original publishers prospectus and order form. Third this is a designers presentation copy evidenced by a lengthy signed and dated 1975 gift inscription by Edward Burrett and his wife Cecile on the recto of the blank preceding the half title. Edward Burrett 1909-1995 was a noted specialist and connoisseur in book design a founding member of the Society of Typographic Designers and founding proprietor of the Penmiel Press.

This large volume measures 10 x 14 inches 25.4 x 35.6 cm bound in full Niger Morocco goatskin by Sangorski and Sutcliffe the contents printed on laid paper with each of the one hundred and fifty-four Sonnets allocated a single page. The volume is housed in a felt-lined purple and gold paper-covered slipcase featuring an interlocking pattern of swallows which is mirrored on the pastedowns of the book. The Sonnets features 40 illustrations on various tinted papers by Clarke Hutton 1898-1984 one of the most eminent and influential book illustrators of his time. Hutton adds something unique to Shakespeares work which so often comes accompanied by traditional engravings rather than modernist line work. The colophon features the signatures of Robert Graves Edward Burrett and Clarke Hutton below the limitation number 44. The signatures of the book designer Edward Burrett and his wife Cecile are also found beneath their autograph gift inscription. Laid in are the large and beautifully printed publishers prospectus featuring a specimen page and extensive information about the edition. Also laid in is the publishers order form.

The volume is in truly fine condition with no appreciable wear or flaws to either the binding or contents. The slipcase remains bright and fully intact with superficial overall scuffing.

William Shakespeare 1564-1616 left a cultural and literary legacy whose continuing influence is difficult to overstate. His stature so dominates English letters that it verges on biblical proportion. To the point Shakespeare is often assumed to have been born on 23 April St. Georges Day so that Englands national poet and her patron saint share the same day of celebration akin to how Christs birthday is asserted onto the winter solstice.

Shakespeares plays are the most conspicuous aspect of his literary legacy but as Robert Graves states in his Preface Shakespeare built up a double reputation in literature; as a classic English playwright and as author of the Sonnets his profound meditations on love. In the plays we are frequently aware of Shakespeare the poet; in the Sonnets we recognize his role as dramatist. The author of the Sonnets became incomparably greater than his contemporaries precisely because he needed to see himself and his beloved in dramatic and human terms.

Robert Graves 1895-1985 was an English poet novelist critic and translator perhaps best known today as a pioneer and master of the historical fiction genre for his Claudius series compellingly fictionalizing the Roman Emperor. Born to a middle-class family with an Irish Gaelic scholar father Gravess early life shaped his love for myth and poetry even as boxing shaped his repeatedly broken nose. In 1913 he received a scholarship to study classics at St Johns College Oxford. However he did not take his place at the university until after WWI; in 1914 he enlisted almost immediately after the outbreak of war joining a regiment which included fellow war poet Siegfried Sassoon.

The Swallow Press hardcover

A few fox spots to rear fep else clean bright and tight. In Lotte Reiniger's silhouette dust jacket: toned and foxed extremities chipped nick to top edge of front panel dark stains to rear panel. Unusual Near fine/ good A typical Blakeston outing whose dust jacket blurb begins by citing off-kilter quotes from correspondence from Dylan Thomas who fondly referred to Blakeston as a "friend of all boozy poets and me too" and speculated: "I think you'll be able to write a naughty book and call it slime and punishment…." Riffing off the quotes the blurb goes on to ask: "Is this then a book to read while travelling under the seat" and continues: "It is certainly a naughty and deliberate study in decadence a story of invert relations a day-lit dream of psychoanalytic symbols". Blakeston and Reiniger likely met through Bryher who certainly knew Reiniger by 1931 when she took the filmmaker to a screening of POOL's film Borderline 1930 in Berlin. Scorpion Press hardcover

SINCLAIR, Marianne; MOZELY, Charles (DJ design)
Paradox Lost
London: Chapman & Hall Ltd 1963. FIRST EDITION INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR. 8vo. Original rust cloth spine lettered in gilt. Spine cocked top and leading edges foxed. Inscribed by Sinclair in blue biro to ffep reflecting wittily on her novel's remaindering: "pleasant because it really makes you feel you have a book behind you" and signed off "The author— remaindered but not yet pulped" gently handled. In Mozely's knowing & sharply observed dust jacket: chipping and wear to extremities joints rubbed. Still a nice copy of Sinclair's first novel whose theme is "the paradox of innocence" and "that only remembered experience counts". Very good/ very good Marianne Sinclair née Alexandre; b. 1940 "is French" a translator of Diderot and Marcel Aymé and a cultural critic back flap. Her husband was the British novelist historian and filmmaker Andrew Sinclair. Paradox Lost was published in paperback as The Corruption of Innocence by Panther in 1965. Chapman & Hall Ltd paperback

Cliff Sterrett (Author, Cover Design, Artist)
Polly and Her Pals: Complete Sunday Comics 1928-1930
San Diego CA : IDW Publishing 2016. 1st. Hardcover. Very Good/None. Cliff Sterrett . Hardcover. Extensive color illustrations by Cliff Sterrett throughout. Clean unmarked copy. Sterrett whimsically played with every element of his feature and was blissfully free of self-conciousness or restraint. Like all truly great comedians he often recruits the reader and lets them in on the gag as it plays out while the actual characters are clueless. It's a deceptively complicated comedic gift. Other times its pure slapstick with the unvarnished roughness and outrageous takes that characterized the period but it's still out laugh loud funny and honestly when's the last time you really laughed at a comic strip Sterrett stretched the limits of comics with the freedom that accompanied an art form yet to deigned respectable and he produced one of the most personally stamped features in comic strip history. The Alphabet Cities Barral Creations 2021

introduction in English otherwise no text. 112 pages 7.8" x 10". NEW in publisher' shrink wrap.
Ships from Hawaii ===. Celebrating spectacular typography creations with a visual book produced by independent makers. ==

Sanborn Fire Protection Maps were originally created back in the 1860s to assess buildings and homes before insurance companies issued fire protection policies. If they are frequently used by historians for the important information they gave on cities what always fascinated me about these maps is the typographic work done on each city name. I spend hours documenting all this legacy and order them alphabetically. Passionate by print I want to give these a new life with letterpress prints and a book. Fabien Barral .
