Amish Love: Adventures in a Puritan Cult
Florence Italy: Michael Angelino Press 1930. Blaine Mahlon. Small quarto. 264pp. With woodcut cover illustration and five erotic half-tone reproductions of paintings by Mahlon Blaine. This book is part of the swelling trend in the 1930s for "privately printed" erotic books which would often be published by anonymous or pseudonymous authors and illustrators and printed with fake publication information in order to protect the creators from public backlash. This erotic tale supposedly taken from a diary of an Amish woman telling of the scandalous sexual exploits of her mother is one such work. Blaine's stirring illustrations bring life to the text combining sensual lines with cunning details. Both the cover in Blaine's bold woodcut style and the illustrations with their broad washes over sketched lines have a raw quality to them a sense of hurried energy that echoes the excitement of the reader. Near fine in wrappers with spotting crease to front cover and scratch to back. Blaine whose most respectable and recognizable works were illustrations for Edgar Rice Burroughs John Steinbeck and the New Yorker published over two thousand drawings between 1917 and his death in 1969. An interesting work from this underappreciated master. Trenary "Mahlon Blaine One-Eyed Visionary" p. 59. Michael Angelino Press unknown

26 Etchings by Shelly Fink
Alford MA 1962. Fink Sheldon. Small quarto. 28ff. One of forty copies. Etched title page and twenty-six fine etchings by Fink ranging thematically from portraits to botany to insects. Many of Fink's etchings have a decidedly Baskinesque aesthetic but Fink's circle centered primarily in New York where he was friendly with Jack Levine and Raphael Soyer. For this collection Fink commissioned Royall Moore to create paper with a high linen count and this was the subject of a Popular Mechanics article in 1965. Moore who was described in the article as an "inventive Yankee" was a carpenter by trade and made all the equipment himself. The binding for this edition was executed by Arno Werner who bound it in full deerskin with a hubbed spine and decorations printed in black on the upper cover and spine. Werner also presumably made the marbled endpapers which also decorate the deerskin-backed folding case. Some minor wear to extremities of the box otherwise fine and bright. unknown

Strouse Norman H.
The Passionate Pirate
North Hills: Bird & Bull Press 1964. Octavo. 91pp. One of 200 copies. A biography on the life and work of Thomas Bird Mosher the remarkable New England publisher and literary pirate. The Passionate Pirate is one of Henry Morris's earlier titles. In making it he was plagued with both papermaking and printing problems since he had recently acquired a new papermaking beater and a new printing press. The first bindings on the books were disastrous and the entire edition had to be rebound. This copy is inscribed by Morris "For my good friend Remy Green" and dated 11/15/64. Remy John Barcham Green worked for and later ran J. Barcham Green Ltd. which operated the Hayle Mill in Kent England. Morris was in frequent contact with Remy and his father Jack John Barcham Green II when he first began his papermaking journey in the 1950s. Morris says of his initial correspondence with Jack Green: "I really sent a barrage of questions and I must say that Mr. Green was extremely kind as he not only answered them all but to this day continues to give help and advice." When Jack was ill in August 1957 Remy replied to one of Morris's letters and afterwards they became "good friends" meeting several times when Remy visited the United States. In addition to the inscription this copy has a J. Barcham Green Ltd. stamp to the front flyleaf dated 1 December 1964. One of the Press's more desirable pieces with an interesting association considering the issues Morris had in creating it. A fine copy in morocco-backed decorated paper boards housed in a drop-back box with leather spine label. Bird & Bull Bibliography A5; Omnibus pp. 38 43-49. Bird & Bull Press unknown

Coptographische Groepon
Amsterdam: Wed. G. A. Diederichs en Zoon and Mindermann 1820. Four paper packets with thirty-six paper figures. The figures are cut from laid paper so that a lantern shining through the cut-out portions would project the image onto a wall or sheet. The largest packet containing six sheets was professionally produced and contains intricate multi-figure images of chess players musicians a school master with his pupils Don Quixote and Sancho Panza dames at a tea table and a noble family. The other three packets containing twelve twelve and six figures respectively look to have been homemade supplements to the original set. These additional figures are very finely done and include a variety of historic figures such as Queen Elizabeth I the prophet Muhammad Diogenes Homer Minerva the Apostles Paul and Peter and King Francis I of France. The set also includes a few generic figures from different professions and ethnicities. Each is carefully numbered and labeled and a handwritten list is included in each packet. Korin gafu
Kyoto: Unsodo 1891. Taniguchi Kokyo after Ogata Korin. Oblong folio. 14ff. Contains twelve woodblock prints in bright colors and gold and silver metallic ink by Taniguchi Kokyo after Ogata Korin in the Rinpa style. Rinpa artists worked in a variety of formats including screens fans and hanging scrolls; the images in this volume include nine designs for folding fans and three vertical designs that could have been used for hanging scrolls or panels. The designs show a mix of natural subjects such as gold flowers and deep red maple leaves to human figures such as a group of cantankerous priests. There are also two designs showing women in elegant flowing kimonos and one breathtaking fan of tumultous waves crested in silver against a gold background. Compared to the bold fan designs the three panels at the end of the volume are quieter using of bokashi printing to render subtle brown and black ink washes for the three sparse nature scenes: a solitary deer in autumn a small group of cranes and a bright white crane against a gold background. This last image especially is very characteristic of the Rinpa style which usually place simple natural subjects against a background filled with gold leaf. The images are preceded by an introduction and a page of seals in black and red and followed by a colophon in red. The Rinpa style of painting was created in the late seventeenth century and consolidated by the Ogata brothers Ogata Korin and Ogata Kenzan. The style experienced a resurgence in the early nineteenth century thanks to the efforts of Sakai Hoitsu and his students. In the late 1880's Taniguchi Kokyo undertook a study of the Rinpa legacy and the descendents of Sakai Hoitsu allowed Kokyo to see and copy original Ogata Korin paintings that had remained in the family. The copies of those designs became the basis of this book and helped to spur a revival of the Rinpa style in Kyoto. Taniguchi Kokyo was a student of Kono Bairei and later went on to teach art at the Kyoto School of Art in 1894 and also at the Kyoto Municipal School of Painting from 1909 to 1912. This important collection of designs is bound in mica-patterned gray paper with tassel-style ties. Dampstains and wear to covers and the original title label has been removed. Remnants of orange cloth to spine and some off-setting and foxing throughout the interior. An important work from this Kyoto artist. Unsodo unknown
