Samen met zijn vrouw Volcxken Diericx stichtte hij een van de eerste prentenuitgeverijen van het Noorden. Vanaf 1548 publiceerde zijn uitgeverij In de Vier Winden of Aux Quatre Vents honderden belangrijke etsen en gravures. Prenten naar fresco's en schilderijen van Rafael en Bronzino de eerste reeks klassieke ruines antieke beelden naast ontwerpen van noordelijke kunstenaars zoals Maarten van Heemskerck of Frans Floris werden op grote schaal verspreid in heel Europa en droegen aldus het schoonheidsideaal van de renaissance uit. Het was Cock die het talent ontdekte van Pieter Bruegel die hem meer dan zestig ontwerpen voor prenten bezorgde. Hij was het ook die het initiatief nam om gravures te maken van enkele van de fantasierijke monumentale composities van Hieronymus Bosch. In dit boek wordt de productie van het bedrijf van Hieronymus Cock en zijn vrouw nauwgezet gereconstrueerd en geanalyseerd.
